This game took place on Sunday, July 9
Great Lakes Shootout, Menomonie WI, Consolation Semis
Southern Minne Magic 35, Southern MN Elite 27

In a battle of Southern MN teams it was the Magic that had more points over the Elite. Magic scored the firs six points after four possessions. Elite then answered with five straight scoring possessions and took a 9-6 lead. M Holst scored the first seven points for Elite. The game was tied at 10 when Magic took control the rest of the half. Elite suffered two droughts of five sandwiched by a lone free throw from Alice Holst. So they finished the half 1/11. Magic finished with a 12-1 run and led 22-11 at the break. Hayley Darrington had 9 points at halftime including a buzzer beater.

The Elite had a sense of deja vu with a scoring string of four possessions to start the second half. It was an 8-0 run to put the score at 24-19. Monson finished the run with six straight points. The game remained at the five point margin, but then Magic lost their scoring magic and went on a 8 possession drought. Magic pulled to 30-27 when Monson made one of two free throws. That was as close as it was to be as the Magic scored on their last three possessions and held Elite scoreless.

This was a semi civil war with both squads coming from Southern MN, but also with players from Austin on both teams. Both times I have seen SM Elite they have been at roughly 60 pp100. Their lineup/roster had quite a few changes. This was the fourth viewing of Magic and they are at about the same level I have seen before. I am waiting for them to take a step in the 90s pp100 on a consistent basis, and not against single school teams. They need to be in the .430s or better for floor % if they want to play in the championship brackets.

Darrington has consistently been the player to watch for SM Magic. I believe this was her 3rd Trench player award this AAU sesason.

Next up: later tonight with the final results of the Lakeville North Summer League
