your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

Today was the last day at the MN Top 100 expo in St. Cloud. They had playoff brackets for the eight teams that made up the camp. The team named Minnesota was 0-3 during the pool play, but then got hot during the brackets. The Cinderella found themselves in the championship against Tennessee. We had already seen Tennessee earlier in the week when they lost to an Albert Lea/GFW team. That was to be their only loss in the camp.

Tennessee 67, Minnesota 49

The first quarter (9 minutes) started out with a bang as Aundreah Aune hit a 3 from the right corner for Tennessee. Claire Kopfmann answered right back for Minnesota with her own 3. The game was back and forth with a tie at 12. Tennessee took the lead for good on Megan Eul's driving basket, and free throw. By the end of the quarter Tennessee was up 22-16. One interesting factor was that Minneota hit for four 3s in the quarter.

Tennessee had a convincing second quarter out scoring Minnesota 16-5. Minnesota only made one field goal the entire half. They had that early with Esther Peterson's 3. Minnesota was 1/12 during the last portion of the quarter. Their biggest drought was 6. Tennessee led 38-21 at half. It could be said that the clock struck midnight in the second quarter for the Cinderella Minnesota squad.

Tennessee continued their roll in the 3rd pushing their lead to 27 at the end of the quarter. Minnesota had better luck from the floor this quarter with two field goals, but it was a struggle to find the bottom of the net. Going back into the second quarter Minnesota had a 10 possession drought. They broke it with a three straight scoring possession, but they finished the quarter 1/9.

Minnesota got back into the flow in the 4th with six field goals. In fact they topped Tennessee 19-13. But the middle two quarters put them into too deep a hole.

They also went to the line and scored more 11-8 than Tennessee, but the key stat was 21 turnovers for Minnesota to 12 for Tennessee.
