this game took place on Sunday, July 30 in the sweltering gyms at Bloomington Kennedy
North Tartan Meltdown, Red Bracket Quarterfinals
North Tartan Blue 59, Kansas City Keys 52
In somewhat of an upset NTB played crisp and clean in the wilting heat for a 59-52 over the Kansas City Keys. The KC Keys were 6-1 in the Miss Basketball tournament in Kearney, Nebraska in mid July.
KCK scored first and the game was fairly tight with the game tied at 7. Katie Haas gave NTB the lead for good on a post up. KCK had droughts of five in the first quarter, 8 in the second. NTB exploited the 8 streak with an 8-0 run. Jaime Zelinsky scored 6 in a row for NTB in the stretch scoring twice on transition steals as she twisted, slithered and snaked her way in for layups. Danielle Adams had all 8 points for the KC Keys in the second quarter. All of her points came in the paint. NTB led 35-19 at half.
NTB kept a helthy ten point lead in the 3rd quarter until KCK hit the jackpot with 6 points in one possession. The score was 39-29 when Kristen Williams was fouled on her second attempt, apparently someone said something that annoyed the ref and a technical was called. Williams made one free throw, #11 made the two techs, and then #11 drained a three. Add the points up and it was now a 39-35 game. Jazmin Townsend scored on a cut to put NTB up by six. #11 drained another 3 to take KCK down 41-38. NTB led 45-40 headed into the fourth. KCK scored on their first two possessions to get to 45-44. Zelinsky came right back for NTB with a 3 to push the lead to 48-44. Then KCK went into a six possession snooze. Going into Adams was working, but she wasn't getting the touches. With four minutes to go NTB led 55-46. Not much changed the rest of the game.

This was NTB's best performance I have seen this year for both pp100 and floor %. NTB played it right by staying in their zone for a couple of reasons. 1. see if KCK can score from the outside (they only made four, they missed many more than that). 2. conserve the legs in the unbearable heat. NTB never suffered extended droughts, and played with more passion than I saw early this season. They withstood the fire and didn't loose their cool and were focused.
Next up: later tonight after the Chisago Lakes Summer League if I don't melt. According to my thermometer it is 101. 5.
