Out & About: Barnum/Browerville

#2 posting 7.17.2006
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

This game took place Saturday, July 14
Rogers Showcase, Gold Division Semifinals
Barnum 37, Browerville 29

Both these teams made the Minnesota Class A tournament last year, and both graduated some important contributors in June. This was a chance to see how the replacements for the 06s fared. The veterans were fine, the next generation will need time to mature.

Both teams started off quickly with scores on their first possessions. Jordan Noska stroked a three to get things going. Barnum quickly answered. But after that Browerville had two four droughts sandwiched by another Noska 3. Barnum suffered a 7 possession drought. Browerville couldn't take advantage as they were starting their own 5 possession dry spell. Barnum led 18-15 at halftime, but Noska had 10 points to lead all scorers.

The second half opened with Browerville closing the deficit to 19-18 on a free throw by #7 and then a put back after the second one missed by Noska. But after that they embarked on a 9 possession drought. Barnum wasn't much better at 1/8 possessions. Barnum did put together a three possession scoring spree later in the half as #20 hit for two 3s. Noska again led the scoring in the half with 9.

One more note: the jersey numbers are only on one side, if they have any numbers at all.
On top of that they don't roster the players at the scorers table making it hard to get all the names matched up to the numbers. If you know the names drop me an email and their names will replace numbers.

BY THE NUMBERS
Barnum 37, 55, 67.3, .291
Browerville 29, 54, 53.7, .222

As you can see by the numbers efficiency wasn't the name of the game in this contest. There were a couple of individual players on each team that stood out, but the teams were not on top of their games. Browerville was in love with the 3. Only one was able to get it in from behind the arc however. The fact is that Barnum had the lowest floor% numbers to win a game since I have been keeping track of possessions last December. I am not going to credit the defense on this, but I will blame the offense--ball handling, passing decisions, and shot selection and range all play a part of this.

next up: another posting from tonight as I travel to St. Cloud to take a look at the MN Basketball News top 100 camp.
