OPEN ENROLLMENT
MN
The MN State HS League has set up a committee to look at the problems associated with open enrollment. The State is looking at other options like forcing the player to sit out a year as will be done in Wisconsin if the transfer is after the 10th grade year. In the article Mpls Roosevelt's girls program is highlighted.
My opinion: I have never heard of a kid transferring because they have better test tubes at the neighboring school. It is all about the winning, and exposure. Kids want to play on a team that wins and they think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Many times it isn't. Many transfers are what I call "Moth to the Candle" The athlete wants to be on a team that wins, gets better exposure, has better perceived connections. I know a lot of transfers are generated by summer ball. I haven't heard cases like in Seattle with the Stealth HS promising scholarships, cars and other enticements here in MN. This isn't only a MN issue. It is universal.
Here is the story from the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
