This game took place on Sunday July 9
Great Lakes Shootout, Menomonie WI
Third place game HS Division
Green Bay Notre Dame 52, Fargo South 49 ot

Why did I watch this game and not the championship? I thought court 1 was where GBND was playing. I thought it was strange that Prairie Shooters (Mandan) was not in the championship. Prairie Shooters did win the championship without Jessica Kielpinski (out with an injury suffered earlier in the tourament). The final points came on free throws with 6 seconds left made by Elizabeth Schleicher. One other very important and significant note: Hannah Quilling the point guard for ECN is also the point guard for Team WI Select 17. She missed the AAU game in order to get ready for the HS game. That shows where her priorities are. After the game the AAU team was playing again and she did play in the 3rd place game.

The third place game went into overtime, so the game ebb and flow was compelling. In fact it was the best of the four I watched at Menomonie. However it started off like it was going to be a typical summer blow out. Fargo South was up 15-3 to start the game. FS had a six possession scoring string after turning the ball over in its first possession. Harling scored FS's first six points and had 8 points in the run. GBND endured an 8 possession drought during this time. But they eventually pulled the plane out of the nosedive and stabilized the situation. FS last 12 point lead came at 22-10. Then they went on a ten possession siesta with five turnovers and five possessions ending up with a missed shot. With such a long stretch without scoring GBND edged back into the contest. They had an 11-0 run. Kegel had 3 points to lead the GBND charge. FS led at half 26-23.

Brunner tied the game at 29 for the first tie since the opening tip. Both teams held slim leads until Brunner broke a 38 tie with a drive to the glass. After this point FS was trying to keep up. Moantle scored the 46th point for GBND. On the last possession of the second half FS's Pattison scored on a post up and we were headed to overtime. FS scored on 4/5 of their last second half possessions.

FS won the tip, but turned it over on a bad pass. GBND scored on all three of its ot possessions with three different hands. On FS's second possession they turned it over again and GBND's Brunner made two free throws to make it a 50-46 game. Thorson came back down and hit a three for FS to make it 50-49. Flaten added two free tosses for GBND and that proved to be the final margin 52-49. Thorson had a desperation heave, but it didn't connect.

GBND didn't panic when down, worked their basic system and kept chipping away. Too often I have seen teams give up this summer when adversity strikes them. GBND had nice passing on their comeback. FS may have been hamstrung by playing too many kids.

Next up: the semis and finals of the Concordia St. Paul Summer League
