This game took place July 1
Dakota Showcase Semifinal
South Dakota Elite 74, Iowa Select I 41

SDE unleashed a barage of 3s in shocking defending champ ISI 74-41. One way or another SDE had 11 3 pt plays in the first half as they built a 45-15 lead. They added 9 more in the second half. In fact SDE only scored one 2 point field goal in the second half. With their 10 scoring possessions in that half 9 were worth 3 points. All in all they had 20 3 point possessions. They converted 3 old fashioned 3s and were 17/25 from beyond the arc. 68% from behind the arc is not bad shooting.

ISI is a strong team and they led at 2-0. But they had trouble early scoring and when SDE strarted raining 3s it only compounded their problems. They had a five possession drought after their first score and were trailing 7-2 when they scored again. SDE on their second scoring possession knocked in a trey by Abby Plucker. Part of the SDE advantage was they are all built for the perimeter and ISI had problems getting out on the shooters early. The game was fairly tight at 13-8 when SDE erupted for a five possession string with the first four all 3 pointers started by Jill Young, but then Kristin Rotert scored 3 straight times from behind the arc. The 5th possession was merely a two. When the dust settled SDE had a 14-0 run and led 27-8. On top of that SDE also put together a six possession scoring string late in the half, again with four 3 point possessions, and had a 16-4 run to lead 43-15. Five different SDEers scored in that onslaught with Jenny Miller scoring six points on one old fashioned 3 point play and one behind the arc.

The sizzling scoring SDE provided in the first half did cool down in the second, but not before they pushed their lead to an overwhelming 51-15 mark. Every score in the second half for SDE was of the 3 pt variety, except for one two point play at their 23rd possession. ISI had a drought of five to open the half, but soon found their eye. The problem was being down so far ISI started rushing things trying to get back into the flow. Defensively they tried 1/3/1 trapping, but SDE found open shots almost everypossession. SDE also had a dry spell of six possessions, but holding a 68-37 lead makes it easier to weather.

TRENCH PLAYER
Many good choices but Jenny Miller has great numbers and is pretty gritty

BY THE NUMBERS
SD Elite 74, 61, 121.3, .443
Iowa Select I 41, 61, 67.2, .344

The first half was one of absolute domination by SDE. Running the #s in that half for SDE it looks like 45, 29, 155.2, .586---pretty impressive numbers. Again when you shoot good, you look good, and SDE looked "mahvelous." Once a team starts to trail big, they start forcing things taking more risks. Most of the missed oportunities in the first half were with shots misfiring. Of the 20 missed chances in the first half, only four were on turnovers.
