Out & About: SD Elite/Iowa Elite II

#3 posting 7.4.2006
Your Daily Dose of Girls Basketball News & Information

This game took place on Friday, June 30
Dakota Showcase, pool play
SD Elite 72, Iowa Elite II 50

IEII led early 10-7 after a Clare Duwellius 3. They converted 4/5 possessions to take the lead. But they soon hit a road block with 7 possessions for naught, three were the result of turnovers. SDE grabbed the lead at this point on a 11-3 run. Kristin Rotert gave SDE the lead for good with a cut and pass from Jill Young. SDE started clicking with a 5 possession run later in the half and a 12-0 scoring surge to make it 36-22. IEII had another 7 drought. Young had five during that string. At half it was SDE 42-26. Young had 10 points and 7 assists, almost a double/double after one half.

The second half was not kind to IEII as they started off 1/12. SDE took advantage of their problems with a 12-2 run. The worst drought SDE had was a three possession streak at mid half. The outcome was never in doubt.

NUMBERS EXPLAINED
player, high school, points, possessions, pp100, floor %

SD ELITE
STARTERS
Megan Doyle, Hanson 14, 14, 100.0, .500 good shooter, aggressive. RF: may rely on right hand too much.
Liz Helsper, Brookings 12, 14, 85.7, .357 nice size for perimeter player. good shot. can drive to the glass. RF: was cutting along the baseline when Young fired a pass to her. She didn't know it was coming althougth she was open.
Abby Plucker, Parker 8, 7, 114.3, .429 Another trey weapon
Jenny Miller, Sioux Falls O'Gorman 10, 6, 166.7, .667 another offensive sneaky weapon. penetrated amidst the trees and chopped them down.
Sara Puthoff, West Central 4, 3, 133.3, .667 another weapon of choice.
BENCH
Kristin Rotert, McCook Central 9, 10, 90.0, .500 Before the game Rotert and Young were showing their other teammates their ability to palm the ball. So chalk up good hands to Rotert. She is a big perimeter player with good shot. Moves well without the ball. can get inside and score and get hit.
Jill Young, Mitchell Christian 15, 10, 150.0, .600 WOW. I have been tracking Young and her numbers for the past four years now and she lived up to the numbers. She has great instincts and her bb IQ is off the charts. She gets the ball to players before they know they are open. She raises the level of play for all her teammates. Makes her teammates better. Sweet, sweet shot. left handed, but can use either. nice pull back cross over. creative and creates space. ready to mix it up. slides in to get position. great court awareness. May be the next Whalen. RF: plays in class B in SD far from the bright lights of publicity. If she played in the Twin Cities they would be building statues to her. The best total player I have seen doing the tracking system. I may have seen better scorers, but what sets her apart is the unselfishness that helps team chemistry and helps winning. Some may question the size at 5-7, but the average D1 guard is 5-8, and the average D1 starter is 5-9. Also speed may be a question. she probably wouldn't win track meets in the sprints, but she gets the job done.

IOWA ELITE II
STARTERS

Shelby Smith, Des Moines East 5, 8, 62.5, .250
Kalli Hansen, Olin 0, 7, 0.0, .000
Clare Duwelius, West Des Moines Dowling 23, 14, 164.3, .643 can fill it up. cashed in six 3s for the game. took big shots and delivered. If she was on the Elite I team they maybe would have been in the Championship bracket.
Brittany Pritchard, Norwalk 2, 4, 50.0, .250
Katlyn Wood, PCM 2, 6, 33.3, .167
BENCH
Sarah Bowden, Sioux City North 4, 4, 100.0, .500
Ashley Arlen, Cascade 9, 8, 112.5, .625
Brittany Peterson, Spencer 0, 3, 0.0, .000
Lindsey Cain, Cedar Rapids Prairie 0, 4, 0.0, .000
Meghin Krambech, Creston 0, 2, 0.0, .000
Emma Krieger-Kittle, Iowa City West 5, 3, 166.7, .667

TRENCH PLAYER
Jill Young

BY THE NUMBERS
SD Elite 72, 64, 112.5, .500
Iowa Elite II 50, 63, 79.4, .349

SD Elite, according to a parent I talked to, has only practiced twice. If this is the case, they have great BB knowledge and, like the parent said, great unselfishness. SDE has no great inside presence. In fact they are a 7 guard team. But they all are great shooters. 6/7 made 3s on the day. Both teams scored 7 free throws. SDE made 8s, IEII made 7 with Duwellius canning six.

It was appropriate that I did this story on the 4th with all the fireworks SDE has in its arsenal.
