ROGERS BREAKDOWN TOURNAMENT
SILVER DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP
MORRIS tigers 40, SIMLEY Spartans 36

Morris beat Simley in the final Breakdown championship 40-36 in the third tight championship game of the day.

Morris got the first jump with a 4-0 lead with both baskets coming on transition after turnovers. Morris had a seven possession drought in the middle of the half. However Simley didn’t seize advantage of the situation with only two points added to their total. There were six ties and eight lead changes in the first half. Both teams had a combined 14 points off of second chancers (32% of all points). It was all tied at 22 at the break.

The same tight contest continued in the second half. Their were four more ties, the last coming at 34 all with 3:18 left. Morris edged in front on a basket by Megan Diercks off a pass from Stefanie Strobel. Simley had two non scoring possessions and that put the Tigers in the driver’s seat. With one minute left Morris went into a delay game. With 28 seconds Heather Gagner was put at the line. She delivered both free throws. Simley quickly scored on Anna Nelson’s basket inside. Diercks was fouled with 6 seconds left and she added two more free throws to ice the contest.

Both teams had uniforms with numbers only on one side. That made it difficult for reporters at the start to figure out who was who.
