PACESETTER TOURNAMENT
NEW LONDON-SPICER
Hancock Varsity GBB team goes 3-1 at New London Spicer Pacesetter Tournament
On Saturday, June 21st, the Lady Owls participated in the annual NLS Summer Pacesetter tournament. Hancock went 3-1 on the day against some quality schools and ended up Consolation Champions. In the opening round, the Owls were matched up against Rocori (Class AAA) and defeated them by a score of 52-27. The girls came out strong and led 33-16 at halftime and never looked back. Stats were as follows:

"It was great to get all of the young kids into this game. They have all been working extremely hard and were very excited to get to play in a varsity game," said coach Holleman.

In the next round, Hancock was matched up against a very aggressive and tall Pipestone team. The Owls ended up losing this battle by a score of 35-33. The girls played with a lot of heart and intensity, but we came up short at the end. The Pipestone team became State Champions in Class AA in 2007 in the same year that the Owls were runner up in Class A. Stats were as follows:

"I was very proud of how hard the girls fought until the very end. They left everything on the floor in this game," said coach Holleman.

In the third round, Hancock was matched up against Montevideo (Class AA) and defeated the Thunderhawks by a score of 48-26. The Owls led 26-10 at halftime and played outstanding defense the entire game. Stats were as follows:

In the final round, the Owls were matched up against Delano (another quality Class AAA school) and defeated the Tigers by a score of 40-35. Stats were as follows:

"I was really proud of the discipline that the girls showed in this game. The girls took excellent care of the basketball in the final minute to clinch the win. Kaylee Voorhees really stepped it up and knocked down two huge free-throws in the final seconds to seal the deal. Aria Walstad was also very aggressive on the presses and picked off 5 steals. Abby Ascheman was called on to play the post position in this game when we got into foul trouble and did a wonderful job out on the court. I was a bit worried as this was our fourth game of the day, but the girls battled strong and picked up the victory! Lindsie Cunningham did an excellent job of handling the ball the entire tournament and can take over the point guard position with ease. Bree continues to knock down the trey with consistency and is an excellent leader out on the court. Kendra Schmidgall can play both inside and outside on the perimeter and is playing some excellent basketball. Hannah Newhouse is an absolute trooper. She was on a mission trip (service project) the entire week and got home at 1 am on Saturday. She still got up early (with about six hours of sleep) and played some excellent basketball. Lauren Nelson is the biggest surprise this summer. She has really stepped up her game on both ends of the floor. Overall, I was very proud of all of the girls! I saw a ton of excellent team work and love the intensity on defense. I was also pleased with the 3 point shooting as the Lady Owls knocked down 28 treys on the day! These girls are very fun to coach and it is great to see them smiling and having fun out on the court," said coach Holleman.

LAKEVILLE SOUTH/BREAKDOWN
Lakeville North went South for a tournament and beat Northfield, Park-Cottage Grove, and New Prague to claim the Lakeville South/Breakdown tournament.

Out & About: BBE/Hancock

HANCOCK owls 47

BBE pulled an upset knocking off Class A #7 Hancock 60-47 in a non-conference clash in Brooten. Hancock suffered through a icy first half as BBE led at half 28-13. BBE is now 17-8. Hancock, the #2 seed in 6A South, is now 19-4.

Coach Teas ended his one day hold out and we were off to the west for this game. The skies were absolutely clear and the mainline roads were a snap, but once we got on the county roads the driving became a little more white knuckle. Luckily we stayed on the road and passed through the metropolis of Padua without problems.

Hancock had a miserable first half. They had droughts of 10 and 8 in a 2/25 sequence. Their pp100 in the first 25 possessions was 20.0 and a floor % of .080. Hancock was missing Lindsie Cunningham who is out with a foot injury. Also Jenny Noordmans returned from an illness. The timing may have been off. Nevertheless the BBE 3/2 zone kept Hancock off balance. The Jaguars prevented the ball from getting inside, and was very aware of the prime long range shooters. BBE did not have problems out of the gate. After two non scoring possessions they ran off four straight scores to go up 8-2, the last two scores from Lindsay Goodwin. During the first 10 possession Hancock spell 6 ended up as turnovers. The Owls only coughed the ball up twice in the second 8 possession drought. At that stage it was 20-5 with 6:45 left in the half. Hancock was even with BBE the rest of the half 8-8. At the break it was 28-13. One of the problems for Hancock was only two players had field goals. Bree Holleman had 9 of the 13 points and 3 of the 4 field goals. In fact for the game only one other Owl other than Holleman and Noordmans was able to get a field goal.

BBE enjoyed their biggest lead after the first possession in the second half at 30-13. Then BBE turned cold with a 1/9 sequence. Hancock came out revved up at the start of the second half and played with a greater sense of urgency. They went on a 19-8 tear and closed to 38-32 with 11 minutes left. That was as close as it was going to get. Holleman contributed 13 of those points with 9 coming from behind the arc. Two possessions later Goodwin put BBE back up by 8, and on the next Jaguar possession Missy Montbriand swiped the ball from Noordmans and converted the lay up for a double digit lead. Hancock was not able to close the gap after that. Every time the Owls would make a move, BBE responded.

BBE attacked the Hancock press with unorthodox methods. They would go deep and cross court, yet they were able to convert on some of those unconventional press breaks. They had 10 points off the press break, six points off steals to lay ups, and 10 more on plain old transition after a rebound. So 26 points came via transition. Hancock had 6 points via transition, a difference of 20 points.

Interesting to note both teams defensive wrap leader started the game on the bench.

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
Both teams used zones. BBE stayed in their 3/2 all night.
Hancock started off 2/3 used 1/2/2 and also a 2/2/1 full court press. At various times they would double the ball.
