BREAKDOWN FALL LEAGUE

This was the final weekend of fall league for 2008 and I was going to watch two contests. That didn't happen. Unfortunately Eden Prairie only had six players and didn't stay around for what was going to be my second game of the day vs Park-Cottage Grove. The first game matched up the two finalists from the AAAA State Championship game for the past two years. The difference in this game today was another absence----Tayler Hill of South. SPC led throughout the game with three ties in the first half. Central's biggest lead coming early in the second half with a 6 point margin.

This game started out with three straight scores. Theairra Taylor, the recent Iowa signee knocked down a trey to put Central up 5-2. Europe Guy had a three of her own to tie it up. The defending two time champs continued to build their lead with TT knocking down another three, and Samantha Robinson-Ricks scoring on a drive to make it 12-7. Ameshia Kearney came into the contest for South and she hit two consecutive baskets, one of which was a three to narrow the margin to 15-12. Tyisha Smith handled the point guard responsibilities and she looked to take it to the basket each time. Smith went to the line three times as Central wasn't going to allow free lay ups. However Smith was perfect at the line all day on her way to 10 points. Guy tied the game at 18. Johnson broke the tie with a three. That started a 6-2 run to finish the half. Smith wrapped up the half with two free throws after the horn to make it 24-20 Central.

Central pushed their lead to 26-20, the biggest of the day on a potential &1. Sadiqah Jihad started the South comeback right away with a three. Smith went to the line for two more free throws on the next Tiger possession. Robinson-Ricks pushed the Central margin back to 30-25. South never could get get over the hump. The Tigers got as close as 32-31 after an complete &1 from Kearney and two more times after that with the last coming on two more Smith free throws. South had two chances to take the lead but a turnover and two missed free throws left them stranded. Laura Hansen scored an insurance basket with 2:30 left. Jen Hill added an insurance free throw to stop any three point ties.

Could these two teams face each other in the AAAA State tournament again? The answers begin tomorrow as Minnesota opens High School practice.

#1 St. Paul Central capped their unblemished season with their third state tournament title in their history with a repeat win over Minneapolis South. With the win Central takes their place in the Mount Rushmore of MN Great teams like Rochester Mayo '97, and Minneapolis North '98.

SPC put their stamp on the game early with three straight scores on their first three possessions. They led 8-0 before South scored at 13:59 on a Tyisha Smith pull up J. Central had cooled off with five possessions coming up blank. They soon got their mojo back on a 4/5 scoring sequence. South never really was out of Central's range as the Tigers cut the lead to 5-14 on a shot by Gabrielle Roberts at the 7:22 mark. That was going to be as close as South was going to get on the night. There was a lot of energy and adreneline flowing through both teams veins. A couple of key parts in the first half: 1. Hannah Cheese left the floor and never returned icing her left shoulder; 2. Ephesia Holmes picked up foul #4. That put a big crimp in South's attack and defense. Central took advantage of the situation with a 10-3 run to close the half. Angel Robinson led all scorers with 9 at halftime. Central led 32-21.

Central was on fire to start the half with five straight scoring possessions. It was an 11-5 run over the stretch. The game became one of accelerations punctuated by periodic stalls by both teams. Central's superior size provided many second chance points. They had 15 on the night. Central kicked it up a notch with their pp100s & floor%. In the first half it was, for them, a struggling 74.4 pp100 and .395. In the second half things were humming with a 108.9, .556 ratio. Leading the charge in the second half was Kiara Buford with 17 points. She finished breaks and knocked down a three. South did however cut the margin to 9 at the 14:57 mark on a steal and lay up by Hill 43-34. That was as close as the Southerners were to get. SPC put together a four possession run with Buford initiating the action with four straight points all on the move. At mid point of the second half South strung together 7 straight offensive possessions. Central didn't have the same luck, but did match South, or close to it, with 5/7. The only question was going to be if they would break the AAAA final scoring record of 80 set back in 2000 by Osseo in their 80-53 win over Eastview. Shayla Johnson answered that question as Central now holds the record.

AAA CHAMPIONSHIP
BECKER bulldogs 41, DE LA SALLE islanders 39

#1 Becker won their first state title with a dramatic 41-39 win over #2 seed DeLaSalle. Rey Robinson hit the game winner for the Bulldogs with 1.9 seconds left. In this classic game no team could gain traction, both were always within eyeshot of each other. The game featured 13 ties and 8 lead changes. And, of course, defense dominated.

Both teams scored on their opening possessions with Becker's Shelly Stemper starting off the night right, and Rachel Booth answering with two free throws for DLS. Every movement was contested. A key match up was Booth on Brianna Mastey. Mastey wasn't able to break free and run wild like in the other contestes this week. But Becker was able to convert on DLS misques. Becker had 13 points in the first half off of DLS mistakes. DLS's biggest lead came at 23-19 after a put back by Aaryn Booker. Becker finished the half with four straight capped by Brianna Mastey's put back to knot it at 23 at half.

DLS took the lead early in the second half on two free throws on two different possessions. Brianna Mastey tied it at 25 with two free throws. Anna Kovalchuk hit a three from the left corner after a pass from Akilah Hudnell. Two Becker possessions later Stemper did the same and it was tie #10. Becker took the lead on another 3, this time by Rachel Gilbert on the left wing. Becker had their largest lead of the night on a basket by Jessie Althoff 35-32. Both teams traded scoreless possessions. DLS tied it on a drive by Akilah Hudnell and she hit the and one for 35-35 all with 4:38 to go. Gilbert converted two free throws for a Becker 37-35 advantage. Rachel Booth hit a jumper two DLS possessions later from the free throw line. On Becker's next two possessions they turned it over. DLS missed a shot and turned it over. Brianna Mastey scored off a pass from Stemper for a 39-37 advantage. Booth traveled. Becker lost the ball on a scramble at the baseline. Aaryn Booker tied the game for the last time on a high low from Booth. Becker had the ball and took two time outs at 41.5 and 26.8. Robinson was on the right side and drove and hit the runner for the final margin. DLS called time out. After some discussion it was decided the clock was going to be 1.9 instead of 1.4. Booker was to throw the ball in, but Althoff deflected the pass and Becker had their first championship.

PIPESTONE arrows 50, ALBANY huskies 49
Pipestone shot an arrow through the heart of Albany's hopes for a third state title with a disputed 3 from Steph Kocourek. The controversial shot took place with 16 seconds left. The shot sent Pipestone to its first team title in any sport. Pipestone finished the year unranked, but had been a staple of the top 10 early in the year. Albany finished second in the final poll.

Pipestone came out and delivered on their first five possessions as they raced to a 10-3 lead. Paige Pals got scoring going with a jumper. Jennie Noreen scored on Albany's second possession with a three from the left corner, but Albany wasn't connecting like Pipestone. Albany was able to get on track and cut the margin to 13-10. Faith Tinklenberg, who had a breakout tournament, scored the next 9 points on 3s, and curl cuts. Pipestone's widest margin was at 23-12. Albany outscored Pipestone 7-4 to finish the half, but Pipestone led 27-19 at the break, the largest half time deficit Albany faced all year.

Albany came out and scored on their first two possessions on back cuts by Taylor Voss. Pipestone eventually switched Ashley Weatherly off her and tried a variety of players before settling on Tinklenberg. But before that switch happened Voss had scored the first 9 points for Albany as they cut the lead to 33-28. Pipestone re-established themselves with a put back by Bailey Bauman (former Viking back up QB Todd Bauman's niece) and a drive by Kocourek 37-28. Then Pipestone went into offensive slumber as Albany switched to a box and one on Tinklenberg with Maddie Johnson running the corners with Tinklenberg. Albany took advantage of the 8 possession drought with 10 unanswered points and they had the first lead of the game on Noreen's drive and one with 7:55 left. Who else but Tinklenberg delivered on the next Pipestone possession with a 3 from the right corner. Sam Larsen tied it up with a shot in the paint. Kocourek scored on a jumper and one to go up 43-40. Both teams were caught in offensive limbo as they made poor choices with the ball. Noreen broke the ice with a drive to cut the margin to 43-42. She added another drive one possession later after a steal and tied the game at 44. Kocourek came up big again with a drive 46-44. Taylor Voss was fouled and canned both toss to tie it up again at 46. A Pipestone turnover, a missed Albany shot, another Pipestone turnover set up the last crazy two minutes. Noreen was fouled and made both to give Albany their second lead of the game 48-46. Chelsey Evans was fouled after getting a rebound on a miss by Weatherly. Evans made the second for a 48-47 Albany lead. Larsen was fouled and she made the second for a 49-47 lead. Kocourek missed on her shot with 37 seconds left. Larsen rebounded. Voss turned it over dribbling up the side lines with 30 seconds left. Pipestone used their time out and Kocourek delivered the game winner. Noreen drove down, but had no where to turn. Pals made the steal and Weatherly was fouled with 4.3 left. She missed the front end and Noreen's desperation 3 was off the rim.

The tough nosed physical nature of the contest kept Albany from moving where they wanted. Pipestone kept their composure in all three contests this week when they could have unravelled. They were down 16-0 to Caledonia. They were down 10 to Jordan in the second half. and they were down 2 after leading most of the game to Albany. They held off the resurgence and found a way to get the job done.

As in any one point game there are plays, or plays that one can endlessly examine. Albany had two fast break chances go for naught. Passes were thrown away by both teams. Off balance shots were attempted by both squads. And official calls, or lack of calls are all part of the nature of a tight game. This game will be remembered for many years to come. In Pipestone it will be the storybook finish to their season. In Albany it will be the disputed 3.

A CHAMPIONSHIP
FULDA raiders 42, HANCOCK owls 34

Fulda successfully defended their A title, but they had to rally to do it.

Fulda trailed by as many as six in the first half. They were down 21-17 thanks to five 3s by Hancock in the first half. Bree Holleman nailed 3 treys for Hancock.

At the start of the second half Fulda took command with 9 unanswered points including an opening three by Sarah Raddle. From that point on it was a catch up game for Hancock. They did. They knotted it up quickly at 28 on two consecutive 3s by Jenny Noordmans and Tara Thielke with 9:07 left. Fulda’s Laura Kramer scored on a put back of a Kaitlyn Kramer miss, and later Chelsey Speckmeier scored on a transition lay up off a steal by Kaitlyn Kramer for a four point cushion. Thielke narrowed it with a pair of free throws. On the next possession Sarah Raddle hit her fourth 3 of the game to give Fulda a 35-30 lead with 2:06 to go. Hancock had three possessions without a score. Fulda didn’t score for two possessions, but with under a minute to go they milked the free throw line for 7 points.

Fulda's superior size and physical nature eventually took it's toll on patient, deliberate Hancock. Both teams kept their composure and poise in tense situations. But Fulda had too much in the tank for Hancock to handle. Take a look at the free throws. If you eliminate the 7 at the end when Hancock was forced to foul, it was 6-3 made Fulda. Fulda was slightly more aggressive in attacking.

NORWOOD-YOUNG AMERICA raiders 57

Albany survived a subpar first half to crank it up in the second half in a 69-57 win over NYA. It was NYA's first loss to a team other than Jordan this year. NYA came out hot and led 13-4 early. Albany scrambled back into the contest knotting it up at 16. NYA regained and held the lead heading into half 26-23. NYA closed with five straight scoring possessions.

Albany opened with five straight scoring possessions, and combined with their two closing scores in the first half got their offensive mojo back. The 10-0 run gave Albany the lead at 33-26 and they never relinquished it again. To illuminate the differences in the first and second half observe the #s:
Albany first half 74.1 pp100 and .354;
second half: 127.8, .639
Albany moved the ball, and themselves better in the second half. They took better shots, and more players started to get into the rythym.

AA SEMIFINALS
PIPESTONE arrows 62, JORDAN jaguars 57 OVERTIME

When you have a 6 point lead early in the first half, but then see the other team take a 10 point lead with 11:11 minutes left you have to have Faith to come back. Pipestone did (Tinklenberg) and they rallied to tie and send the game into overtime in an upset win over Jordan.

Jordan rolled at the start of the second half with the Leah Dietel express. Jordan scored on their first seven possessions, LD scored on her first six possessions for 11 points. That took the Pipestone 27-26 lead and turned it into a 39-32 Jordan lead. Jordan pushed it to a 44-34 lead when Pipestone started to turn the game around. Megan Vanderpoel started what was 19-9 run. But it was Tinklenberg that had 10 points including the shot that tied the game at 1:04. Jordan had the ball for the last shot but a drive by Amanda Dietel did not score.

Steph Kocourek scored the first Pipestone points in the extra session as they started a four possession scoring streak. It was 59-57 when Kocourek scored 6th overtime point to make it 61-57. Chambers missed two free throws on the next possession and Jordan never got back in the flow.

A SEMIFINALS
HANCOCK owls 66, ADA-BORUP cougars 50

Hancock pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament so far taking down #1 Ada-Borup with ease 66-50. The smaller Owls took away the transition game that AB thrives on. Also Hancock handled the AB pressure, while AB turned the ball over frequently. The poise of Hancock was evident down the stretch as they withstood the desperate comeback attack.

AB led early in this game 15-4 and it looked like a rout was about to unfold. AB scored on five straight possessions to take the lead with Kelli Smart and Katy Ness connecting on the 3 ball. Hancock turned the tables right away with their own 3 by Jenny Noordmans. That started a 11-2 run that cut the lead to 17-15. At one point Tara Thielke had 10 straight Hancock points as they cut the margin to 24-23. Hancock closed the half with a 16-2 run. Hancock took the lead with 5:28 to go on a 3 by Bree Holleman. Holleman had 7 in that stretch. AB had a 7 possession drought with four turnovers. Even when they missed with their shots, Hancock took off flying down the court. Hancock had a 37-26 cushion at half.

Hancock maintained their spread throught the half. They milked the clock on their possessions going 21 touches on a Thielke jumper on possession #17, and 17 touches on possession #18 that ended again on a pull up jumper from Thielke. In that possession Holleman was fouled, made the first but the littlest Owl on the floor Stacie Cunningham grabbed the miss on the second keeping the possession alive. The tightest AB could get it didn't occur until 1:39 to go as they cut the margin to 59-50 after a drive by Laura Kolness. But that was the end of the line for their offensive production as Hancock maintained their composure and had a keen eye at the line. The Owls converted on the last four possessions, all at the line.

Once they were down they looked flustered since they have not had to play from behind often this year.

FULDA raiders 65, BGMR gators 31

The inside combination of Kramer & Kramer combined for 36 points and 13 rebounds. The Raiders used the high low game to great effect. Fulda only trailed once at 3-2 in this 65-31 romp. After Kaley Mekash's trey for BGMR, Fulda went on a 20-2 run. Fulda was clicking with 9/13 floor offensive sequence. BGMR had a 9 possession drought during the stretch. Fulda led 32-15 at the break.

Fulda kept pushing the lead higher in the second half. Fulda connected at one stretch 10/12 with their offensive possessions. BGMR just couldn't slow down the inevitable. No one Fulda player dominated in the stretch. It was a 19-4 run.

MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH tigers 73, CHAMPLIN PARK rebels 70

This was the best contest of the tournament from an artistic and competitive angle. It had drama, twists, turns, comebacks and rallies all in the space of two possessions. But it was a thrill ride for those in the stands.

CP started off with a 8-0 run with the big 3 each contributing for CP. Jenny Theisen opened with a 3 from the right corner. Natalie Gigler knocked down her shot in the paint, Ashlynn Fuller scored on a drive and one. South called time out to regroup. Both teams opened in 2/3 zone and that kept South off the boards early. Gabrielle Roberts scored on a put back for South's first points. CP's high water mark came twice with a 12 point lead, the last coming at 26-14. CP was stroking at 144.4 pp100 and .667 floor%. South at this point started their comeback. They outscored CP 20-9 for the last 7 minutes of the half. They checked in with 142.9 pp100 in their last 14 possessions. South took their first lead on Ephesia Holmes pull up 31-30. Tayler Hill padded it with a trey. But on CP's next possession they added five to their total with a drive by Burns. She was fouled for the and one, but missed the free throw. Heather Sampson grabbed the board and Ali Schmidt canned the trey to put CP back up 35-34.

To open the second half both teams continued their torrid pace. In fact CP's first three scores all were 3 point variety. Fuller nailed two 3s and then Sampson scored on an old fashioned play. That was CP's largest lead in the second half with a 5 point margin. Hill answered right back with her three to make it 44-42. There were 3 ties and 8 lead changes. South, on the 6th lead change took over on a Holmes drive to go up 57-56 with 8:23 left. South stretched that lead out to 64-56 with 4:16 left. CP then started a 7 possession scoring sequence. CP started off the string with six straight points from Fuller. Jenny Theisen scored on a 3 with 1:17 left and went to the line for the four point play, but it was off. Hannah Cheese got the board and eventually South was fouled by Burns. Hill missed her two free throws. On CP possession #6 Ashley Witte made two free throws after getting the rebound off the Hill miss. That made it 69-68. A violation put the ball back in CP's hand with 46.9 seconds left. Theisen was fouled and she converted the first, but missed the second. Roberts picked up the board for South now down 70-68. Hill drove down into the lane and drew the "and one" which she converted with 34.1 left. That proved to be the game winner. On CP's next possession the string ended. Gigler ended up turning it over on a pass and Hill was there to get the ball. Holmes finished up the scoring with two free throws. CP had once last crack with a desperation 3 from Theisen in the right corner, but it bounced away. Now it will be a replay of the Twin City Game won by Central 83-64 on a snowy Saturday late in February.

ST. PAUL CENTRAL minutemen 79, EDINA hornets 41

SPC's speed, depth, strength and power kept the tournament buzzing with a shut down performance in the first half. SPC held Edina to 17 straight scoreless possessions It was an eight minute drought in which SPC rattled off a 27-0 run. In the drought Edina had 9 turnovers. Angel Robinson added another chapter to her storybook season with 17 points. Edina put forth full effort, but it was no match for the SPC juggernaut.

The bench emptying came early with the starters gone by 6 minutes left. SPC had a 48 point lead at the juncture. Edina outscored SPC 14-4 the last six minutes.

It was the worst of times---14-11 at half; 15 straight nonscoring possessions for DL; 16% shooting for DLS---it was the best of times (at least for DLS) with offensive execution unmatched for the year when I have seen DLS. Their free throw shooting woes of early in the year have been cured. And you can't spell DeLaSalle without D. And that tenacious, in your face, grinding defense cause DL to go to the medicine cabinet for Excedrin. Every pass, shot and movement up court was contested. Nothing was given. DL paid for that with exhaustion.

Things started off brightly for DL. Fists were pumping after they grabbed a 7-0 lead on Macey Bentley's 3. But for the excrutiating next 15 possessions DL went to the well and came up dry. DLS didn't exploit the situation much, but enough to be up 14-7 when DL found the flow again on two free throws by Corey Lof. Both teams combined for 46 possessions in the first half---the lowest I have charted this year.

Both teams took a tonic at half, but DLS's was double the strength on offense. DL did cut the lead to 16-15 on their second possession, but DLS answered with a three from Frances Wehrwein. That started a 22-4 run that ended any chance for DL to come back. DLS scored on 10/12 of their first possessions in the second half, three of which were back breaking 3s. DLS did cool off with a five possession dry spell, but DL didn't exploit the situation.

But if DLS was Abysmal DL was in the abyss. DL in the first half checked in at 47.8 and .217; things improved slightly in the second half to 75 and .375, but the question was never in doubt once the DLS train left the station.
If you were to name a band after DLS it may be "Booker and the Furious D." All players for DLS put forth tremendous energy and make life brutal for guards of the opposition. It is a physical game and the constant harrassment takes its toll.
With the confidence, tenacity and intensity played by the DLS5 on D, plus the improved free throw shooting, they are poised to take the AAA title.

Becker went on a 19-3 tear in the second half to distance themselves from BSM.

BSM opened scoring with a surprising 3 from LaToya Williams. Becker regained the lead at 7-5 led by Brianna Mastey's old fashioned 3 point play. Brittany Mayclin, BSM point guard, picked up her 2nd foul and sat. So BSM without Kachine Alexander (foot), Sam Morgan (knee) and Mayclin on the bench used their second string perimeter players and they scrapped and scraped back into the lead. They strung together five straight possessions on a 11-2 run to get the 16-12 lead. Rachel Tondryk had five points, including a 3 in the run. But Brianna Mastey put Becker on her back like she has done all year and scored on the next possession. The offenses cooled in the last seven minutes of the half with Becker outscoring BSM 6-5. BSM did lead however 21-18 at the break. Brianna Mastey had 12 at half.

Things broke Becker's way with a 17-1 run from the 15 minute mark on to the 6:50 mark. BSM went 1/13 at that time on their possessions. Only four were on turnovers. Becker was cleaning the glass, limiting BSM to one shot. Brianna Mastey, once again, had five of the 11 stops in that stretch. At that point it was Becker 39-25. The game never got into single digits after that.

NEW PRAGUE trojans 57

Benilde-St. Margaret’s moved on to defend their title with a hard fought 59-57 win over New Prague. BSM also became the first lower seed to upset a higher seed (5 over 4).

There is much more to say on this game, but a key factor was Becky Theisen of NP getting into foul trouble and only playing 14 minutes. BSM gutted and gritted out the win. Becky Theisen had a chance to tie the game up on a last second shot but the shot was short. She was fouled with time running out on a three point attempt. At the line she missed her first shot, made her second and then purposely missed the third. In the ensuing scramble the ball was knocked out of bounds and NP had one last shot. With 1.1 seconds left Trecker took the shot in the heart of the lane, but came up short.

MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH tigers 67, EASTVIEW lightning 55

South dominated the first half with their swarming, pesky defense harrassing every movement up court. Eastview led twice in the early going, the last coming at 7-6, but South's superior quickness and their ball handling--it is like they have three point guards on the floor--gave them match up advantages. South never had a great string on offense, but they did go on a 16-5 run over the last portion of the first half to lead 31-16 with under a minute to go. Tyisha Smith was creating all sorts of problems for Eastview's ball handlers with five steals and when she wasn't picking their pocket, she was breathing hard down their necks and nipping at their heels taking them out of their offensive flow. Offensively it was Tayler Hill delivering 15 first half points from the opening drive on the first possession to 3s, to the free throw line.

South's defense in the second half was not as effective and not as air tight as in the first half. Perhaps Eastview made adjustments. Perhaps Eastview's player figured out what they needed to do, but there was a huge difference in the level of intensity on the defensive side of the ball. South still was delivering on the offensive end with regularity. Eastview did score on 7/8 possessions at one stretch. Brittnye McSperron tried to keep Eastview in the contest with 19 second half points, 11 of which came at the line as she continually drove into the heart of the South defense. McSperron found gaps, and the help wasn't there, or if it was it was late, once she had a step around her defender. South's biggest lead came at 20 a couple of times in the second half, the last coming at 63-43 with 4:07 left. Eastview outscored South 12-4 to close the game. From the 6 minute mark on Eastview scored on 9/11 possessions. McSperron had 11 of her points at that time.

There was a big contrast between the first and second half on South's defense.

Eastview was much more aggressive in driving to the basket (Brittnye McSperron) in the second half. It was almost as if South put the game on cruise control on defense. They will need to find the energy level they gave in the first 18 minutes on defense and duplicate that over the last 18 minutes in the State quarters on Wednesday.
Eastview just didn't have the quickness to match with South over the long haul. Their pressure never really bothered South.
