IBCA SELECT RED 72, CSS BISON 49

IBC A overcame a fast start by the CSS Bison and used the free throw line, plus a deeper bench to beat the Nebraska team 72-49. The fresher legs played a big part in the win. Also this was a record setting performance. IBCA Select Red now has the highest pp100 that I have seen in a game with 146.9. The previous high was a 145 in an 14u game in a mismatch pool game. This score is significant in that it came in the finals of a big tournament.

The Bison raced out to a 12-3 lead after their first six possessions. Alyssa Kamphaus had six of the 12 for CSS. However that would be all she would score in the contest. Foul problems soon reared their head and Kamphaus had to camp on the bench. IBCA soon mounted their comeback with Jaime Printy scoring the first four points in a 14-4 run. IBCA took their first lead at 17-16 after a back cut by Brittany Peterson. CSS quickly regained the lead with five straight points including a three from KK Houser. Houser had four 3s in the first half. That lead wouldn’t last however. IBCA scored seven straight times on another 16-4 run to take a 33-25 lead with 2:56 left in the half. The Ames connection of Kionna Kellogg and Trisha Nesbitt each provided four points in the burst. IBCA led 34-31 at the half. IBCA made 8 free throws in the first half compared to two for CSS.

The game turned early in the second half. IBCA led 41-35 when the officials slapped a technical on the CSS Bison bench. The Bison had the ball at the time. After that incident IBCA went on a 14-5 scoring spree. 8 of those points came at the line. It was 57-40 at that stage with 9 minutes left. The next phase of the game included IBCA holding the ball waiting for the Bison to get out of their 2/3 zone. For two minutes not much happened except for Jaime Printy holding the ball. That kicked off an eight possession scoring run for IBCA as they closed with a 15-7 run.

In the five games I have charted CSS Bison over the past two tournaments these facts jump out
1. They don’t score as much in the second half. They average 32 points in the first half, 24 in the second half.
2. Defensively they give up more in the second half. They allow 20.8 in the first on average with 28.6 in the second half.
3. Other teams are shooting an average of 9 more free throws a game.
4. Other teams benches are scoring 10.5 more points a game.

For IBCA it was another balanced effort. In six games four different players led IBCA in scoring. Seven players had double figures in one game in the tournament. Of the 32 teams in this tournament 23 (71.9%) had one player that averaged more than the leading scorer for IBCA. That indicates great balance. IBCA used the wave sub pattern with five in and five out. That kept the legs fresh, especially on the third game of the day.

IBCA SELECT RED 69, NORTHERN LITES 31

It was déjà vu all over again. Another game, another Massacre. This was the final contest in the Friday Pool action. It seemed I was watching the same game over and over in a groundhog day time warp. This time IBCA Select Red turned off the Northern Lites 69-31. Again it was over rather quickly as IBCA jumped out to a 9-0 lead which ballooned to 36-10 at halftime. Again IBCA had enough to win the game after sixteen minutes. Again it was a 120s to 50s pp100 contest. Again speed, skill and veterans took the contest.

Most of the Northern Lites are from South Dakota with a sprinkling of Minnesota players. Most are 2010 players with a sprinkling of 2009s. NL struggled with their offense against the defensive variety of IBCA. NL had droughts of 7, and another 7 in the first half. The droughts were less frequent in the second half, but the parched landscape remained.

IBCA SELECT RED 92, MONTANA ELITE 46

This was the first game I saw of 13 over two days. Due to the sheer volume I will give quick recaps.

IBCA ran over Montana in the first of 9 straight games I charted. The odd thing was Montana led 3-2 and another at 5-4. By half time IBCA had enough to win the game as they led 48-21.

IBCA broke the pre-tournament record of 88 points and tied a tournament record with 33 made 2 pointers in this game. IBCA played with the precision of a fine German made car. In the first half IBCA had a scoring string of five. In the second half they one of seven. Droughts were few and far between.

Montana relied on the 3 as they had three players 5-4 on the roster and only one player 6-0 or above. Also IBCA was physically stronger. Montana's droughts included stretches in the first half of 9, and 5; and 6 and 8 in the second.

NORTH TARTAN LARSON 60, IBCA SELECT RED 59

In what proved to be the most competitive, and tight game of the tournament (that I charted) North Tartan Larson edged out IBCA Select Red 60-59. This game contrasted the inside power game of NTL with the outside snipers of IBCA. This game also featured seven players that have already made verbals to colleges. Five were from Iowa, two from Minnesota. For NTL Shakila Boler and Katie Loberg are headed to the Gophers. Also for NTL Amanda Zimmerman and Chelsea Poppens are headed to Iowa State. For IBCA Jaime Printy is headed to Iowa, while Amber Kirschbaum and Jess McDowell are off to Northern Iowa. It was one of the two Iowa Imports, Amanda Zimmerman, who scorched the nets for 19 points including the game winner with under 10 seconds left.

This was a tight contest throughout befitting two heavy weight teams. The largest lead for NTL occurred in the first half at 19-13 after a tip in by Jess McDowell as she was going for a defensive board. The basket was credited to the nearest NTL player which happened to be Katie Loberg. IBCA took a 23-22 lead after Printy connected on a three. Their biggest lead of the half came a couple possessions later at 24-22 after a Kionna Kellogg free throw. NTL finished the half with a 9-3 run to lead 31-27 at the break. In that run the IBCA bench was slapped with a technical after protesting to vehemently over a lack of a call. Zimmerman made one of the two free throws as she tallied 15 points in an almost flawless first half.

The second half was another classic. The widest margin came after a Zimmerman basket with 11 minutes left 42-37. IBCA responed two possessions later with a three by Katelyn Sunde and then Sunde hit a jumper to tie it up at 42. The game was tied six times in the second half, the last coming at 49 all. In the last five minutes there were nine lead changes. Loberg scored to put NTL up 51-49. Trisha Nesbitt responded on the next IBCA possession with a three. Two NTL possessions later Jennifer Dowd connected. Jess McDowell edged IBCA back up by one with her basket with three minutes left. Chelsea Poppens made two free throws with 1:38 left for a 55-54 NTL lead. Kionna Kellogg scored on the weakside flash cut for at least the second time in the game to put the Iowa team up again 56-55. Dowd unleashed a three for a 58-56 NTL lead with one minute remaining. IBCA missed their shot on the next possession and Riley Norman stole an errant pass on the next NTL chance. It was Nesbitt again connecting for a 59-58 IBCA lead with 12.4 seconds left. IBCA had fouls to give and they made a couple before NTL took another time out with 9.6 left. On the ensuing play, Loberg drove the lane and found Zimmerman on the left side for the game winner. Nesbitt had a crack at the basket, but the shot didn’t drop. NTL won the instant classic.

In a one possession game every possession from the start of the game to the finish can be the “key” play. There were plenty of interesting sequences, ups and downs, to chew on over the rest of the summer.

IBCA SELECT RED 52, MN STARS ECKMANN 41

IBCA beat MN Stars Eckmann in the 16u round of 32 52-41. In the games I charted with IBCA before this tournament they were hitting 105 pp100. In this game the pp100 was 78.8. However this is the first tournament they played since the end of March and the rust showed. One area the rust didn't show was the IBCA defense. They only allowed 9 first half points and 8 total two point field goals all game.

MSE started the scoring first with a reverse lay up on a second chancer by Kellie Ring. The game was tied at 5 when both teams sunk into the deep freeze. IBCA had nine empty trips while MSE had six. IBCA burned a time out when the trailed at 7-5. The last MSE basket of the first half came with nine minutes left. That was also their last lead at 9-7. After that it was all IBCA. MSE suffered through a drought of biblical proportions with 19 dry possessions. Tack on two to star the second half and the grand total was 21. MSE had seven straight turnovers in the early drought stages. IBCA made use of the down time by going on a 16-0 run the rest of the half. IBCA led 23-9 at the break.

With such a deep hole MSE had a lot of catching up to do. After failing to score on their first two possessions MSE's offense awoke from their slumber. They went on a 17-6 run to close the margin to 31-26 with nine minutes left. MSE was 8/12 in that offensive sequence. It was IBCA's turn to struggle offensively. They had a 2/10 offensive sequence with three turnovers in the mix. The game hung in the 7 to 9 margin the rest of the way for the most part. MSE did close to 36-30 after a three by Alisa Brown. In the last three minutes IBCA found their groove again with a 5/6 sequence. IBCA stretched their lead to 52-38 just before Ring nailed a three as time expired for the final 52-41 margin.

IBCA Select Red beat Team Iowa for the Junior Eligible D1 championship 61-44. IBCA is made up of veterans--09s and 10s. Team Iowa is made up entirely from the 2011 class. Team Iowa is not only young, but they look like they have been cut from the same cloth. All are between 5-9 and 6-2 with the average coming in at 5-11. They are all lean and athletic.

IBCA scored on their first possession with an inside bucket by Kionna Kellogg. Team Iowa started off the game with a 1/7 sequence as IBCA built up a 6-2 lead. IBCA was scoring in the paint against the youngsters. IBCA led 11-4 after a pair of free throws by Amber Kirschbaum with 1:05 left. Team Iowa was able to break the IBCA press for two and on the next possession cut the margin to 11-8 on a put back by Virginia Johnson.

Team Iowa tied the game at 12 after a three by Lindsey Smith followed by a free throw by Smith on the next possession. After that Team Iowa went into a four possession drought on four straight turnovers. IBCA milked that opportunity with five straight scores, two scores on transition lay ups, to pull out 20-12. IBCA continued their hot hand with an 8/9 sequence overall. Trisha Nesbitt was hot for IBCA with seven in the second quarter, 11 for the half. For Team Iowa Smith matched Nesbitt with 7 for the quarter, six coming on two 3s. It was 33-22 IBCA at the half.

Team Iowa was able to narrow the margin to 41-34 with 2:20 to go in the third on a drive by Allison Emrich. IBCA, despite being out sized as a team, did a fair job on the offensive boards and Jessica McDowell made two free throws after IBCA had three cracks at scoring. IBCA had four points in the quarter on second chancers. Nesbitt added a 3 for a 46-34 IBCA lead heading into the fourth.

The changing defense and savvy veteran play kept Team Iowa at arms length. Team Iowa never got the margin to single digits again in the fourth. The last two minutes were empty of scoring however. IBCA had a five possession drought down the stretch before Katelyn Sunde scored, while Team Iowa finished the contest with seven consecutive empty trips.

This was a good experience for Team Iowa making it to the finals in the AAU State tournament two years ahead of schedule. Cutting down on turnovers will be a key for their summer season. Now most of the Iowa teams won't take the floor again until June.

What a difference a game makes. All Iowa Attack went from a 132.9 pp100 in the quarters to a 60.9 pp100 in the semis as IBCA Select dominated as much as AIA dominated Lightning Scarlet in the quarters. There was little doubt the direction of the contest as IBCA led 22-7 after one quarter. 8 IBCA players had 6 or more points led by Kionna Kellogg with 18.

IBCA had two former 2007 AIA players on the roster, but only one played. Katelyn Sunde played while Katie Schechinger had other obligations on Sunday. That isn't the only addition to the IBCA roster. Jaime Printy, who is headed to the Iowa Hawkeyes, has moved over from Iowa Elite. Printy missed out on last year's action due to a knee injury. Two players return from the IBCA 2007 edition--Trisha Nesbitt and Amber Kirschbaum. Two others have moved up from the 2007 second team---Jessica McDowell, who is headed to Northern Iowa, and Brittany Peterson.

Right away on the first IBCA possession the tone of the game was set. Nesbitt struck from behind the arc and the Red built on that lead to 9-0 before AIA managed to find the bottom of the basket. They had an 8 possession drought to start the contest. Three of their first four possessions ended up as turnovers. It was raining 3s for IBCA in the first quarter with four total made. Katie Gustafson ended up with two of the four. Meanwhile AIA only mustered two field goals the entire quarter. It was 22-7 after one.

IBCA cooled off somewhat this quarter with a 1/6 start. Again it was Nesbitt opening the quarter with a three. The hottest hand belonged to Kionna Kellogg inside with 6 points in a little over a minute. On her 10th point of the half, and 6th of the quarter AIA took a time out with the score 31-14. AIA did outscore IBCA the rest of the half, but still trailed 36-20 at the break.

IBCA opened the third quarter with a 15-5 run. Sunde delivered two consecutive long range missiles in the run. In fact IBCA had an 8/9 offensive stretch. AIA didn't have any massive drought, but IBCA was connecting on three 3s and one conventional three point play in adding to their lead.

IBCA definitely cooled off at the start of the fourth quarter with a 1/5 sequence. Catching fire for IBCA in the fourth was Riley Norman with 7 points. The final was 75-39.
