BREAKDOWN FALL LEAGUE
Bloomington Jefferson
EDINA hornets 35, WOODBURY royals 34, Overtime

The Edina Hornets led once in the entire contest and that was enough to slip by Woodbury 35-34 at Jefferson. Woodbury led throughout the game and led by as many as 9 in the second half before the Hornets closed out with a 11-2 run. Woodbury didn't score the last 4:30 of the second half.

The Royals had the early jump with a 6-0 lead with four points coming in transition. Edina started the contest in a seven possession drought. The Hornets closed to 11-8 by using a full court trapping defense. The Hornets had an 8/10 offensive sequence making up for lost time, but the Royals were matching them and then some. Woodbury was 7/9 at the same time. Woodbury's biggest lead came at 24-15. A Taylor Young basket on an out of bounds play cut the margin to 24-17 at the half.

Once again Woodbury tested the nine point margin after a put back by Michelle Young. The Royals were destined to cool off in the second half however. The last time Woodbury led by o it was 32-23 with a little over ten minutes left. Edina didn't start their comeback rally until later four possessions later. Once they did it took on the life of a steamroller rolling down hill. Edina cut the lead to 34-29. A big three from the right wing by Molly Carter followed by two free throws by Asleson tied the game. On the next Royal possession Edina's Kenzie Miller stole the ball. Both teams traded missed baskets, Woodbury's a big further a field, and the regulation ended at 34 all.

In the one minute overtime the first Edina lead came after the front end of a Jamie Bresnahan free throw. Woodbury had a chance to take the lead back at the other free throw line, but Michelle Young missed the front end. Bresnahan rebounded and then the refs discussed whether it was a one & one or two shot. The rebound stood and Edina milked the clock dry for 21 more seconds. Woodbury didn't get a great shot off at the end.

Earlier in the day Edina beat Rosemount 31-25, and Maple Grove defeated Woodbury 31-18.

FIRST ROUND
NEW PRAGUE Trojans 59, WOODBURY royals 38

due to the volume of games, these reports will be shorter and I will come back to fill in the gaps. Thanks for your patience.

New Prague defeated bigger class Woodbury 59-38.
The Trojans quickly jumped out to a 14-3 lead with a 7/8 offensive sequence. NP scored the first five times they had the ball. Brit Rynda and Maggie Weiers each had six points of the first 14 for NP. Woodbury put the clamps on NP toward the end of the first quarter. After an initial 175 pp100 in their first 8 possessions, NP cooled considerably with a 27.3 pp100. Woodbury tied the game up at 19 with two free throws by Jessica Thone. Amanda Wagner made one free throw to finish the half with New Prague clinging to a 20-19 lead.

In the second half NP had a slight advantage in the first half of the third quarter, but put the pedal to the metal with five straight scores including two threes in a 11-4 run. NP won the quarter 21-9 to lead 41-28. Woodbury couldn't climb out of that hole as NP again won the quarter 18-10. Rena Kneeland had 12 points to lead NP.

4AAAA CHAMPIONSHIP
ST. PAUL CENTRAL minutemen 60, WOODBURY royals 30

St. Paul Central will return to defend their AAAA title after defeating Woodbury 60 to 30. Woodbury's strong defense and deliberate offense was able to hold Central to 20 points under their scoring average, but the inside dominance of Kiara Buford (20 points, 9 rebounds) and Georgie Jones (12 points, 17 rebounds) was too much for the Royals. Woodbury entered the game with a defensive average of 43 points per game. The halftime score was 29-15.

Here is another Spy Out & About, this time from Marc Hugunin

WOODBURY 43, CRETIN-DERHAM HALL 40

Like St. Paul Central in the game that followed, Woodbury used a fast start and a controversial call to hang on and to advance to the Section 4AAAA finals Friday night at Concordia St. Paul. Woodbury jumped out to a 14-5 lead over Cretin-Derham Hall near then 10:00 mark of the first half, and led 19-14 at the half.

The Royals took their largest lead of the night at 28-18 on a bucket by Caitie Christoffel at 14:00 of the second half. From there the Raiders whittled away at the Woodbury lead. Cretin scored 6 straight points while Woodbury suffered a 7 possession drought, but Woodbury answered with 5 points in a row. Cretin responded with 8 straight. Then after a Jessica Thone free throw for Woodbury, Cretin finally tied it up at 34 at about 5:00 on a Sarah Hendricks bucket on a pretty feed from Mary Kenney. Thone, a junior, hit another free throw, but Molly Geske gave Cretin the lead, 36-35, at 3:52. Kendra Harris hit a couple of buckets for Cretin, the second at 0:34, but that only tied the game at 40. Because between Harris’ buckets came a pair of field goals by Thone, a 3 at 1:40 and a 2 off of a steal by Carrie Lang at 1:07.

Woodbury took timeout at 0:20 and gave every indication of milking the clock down to the final seconds before attempting a shot. They probably took it further than Coach Dave Preller would have liked, as sophomore Kassey Kallman’s 3 left her hand with less than 0:01 on the clock. It hit the top of its arc as the buzzer sounding, then swished through the net. The entire gym held its breath, waiting to see if the shot was good or not—neutral observers were divided on the question. But the officials made a bee-line for the door and the Woodbury celebration began.

A Cretin assistant followed the officials out of the gym and the Cretin players stayed at their bench waiting for a reversal that never came. The Woodbury players lined up for the traditional post-game handshake and waited...and waited. Finally, they left the gym. But eventually Cretin coach Amy Bellus asked Preller to bring his team back, which he did, and the handshake followed.

Thone scored 13 of Woodbury’s 24 second-half points, while Kallman’s game-winner was her only bucket of the 2nd half. Harris, Hendricks and Geske scored all but 2 of Cretin’s 2nd-half points.

WOODBURY royals 53,
MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST lakers 42

In a rare Wednesday night game it was #9AAAA Woodbury grinding out a win at Southwest. This game contrasted with last night's contest at Johnson. Woodbury was quite deliberate looking for the choice shot in the paint for the most part. SW switched up the defenses often, but Woodbury still patiently took the shots they wanted, when they wanted.

Woodbury took control early when they held SW to 2 points over 12 possessions. Woodbury enjoyed a 10-2 run to take a 10-4 lead. However SW scored on four straight possessions to take a 13-11 lead. It all started with a 3 from the left corner from Hannah Goetz. She had five points in the 9-1 SW run, Melissa Fitz had the other four points. The Lakers then slipped back into the cold mode again with a 1/9 sequence and 2/13 to finish out the half. Free throws also played a big part in the first half. Woodbury hit for 9, SW had 5. Woodbury led at the break 25-18.

In the second half SW struck early with a 7-2 run to make it 25-27. Fitz had five of those points as she drew plenty of attention. On the next Royal possession Sarah Hintz scored in the paint to make it 29-25. SW then went out on another 7-2 run. Goetz gave SW their only lead in the second half at 32-31. Then Fitz took a break on the bench. Woodbury seized advantage of that with a 6-0 run and were back up 37-32. Four of those points were from steals by Kallman and transition lay ups. A quick SW time out got Fitz back in the action. Again SW closed the margin. Another 3 by Goetz cut the margin to 37-35. The last time it was a one possession game (43-40) was with 4:18 left after a Britta Syverson free throw. From there on out Woodbury milked the clock for the best available shot. Woodbury finished with a 5/7 possession string. SW by contrast was 1/7, four of which were turnovers. Both Goetz and Fitz fouled out to hamper the Laker outside attack.

A couple of her passes were spot on, but teammates didn't catch and finish. needs to stay positive and encourage in those disappointing moments. has a nice shot, a nice step back.
