CENTENNIAL cougars 59, HAYFIELD vikings 17

Defending Sweet 16 champion Centennial had their transition game in high gear in a 59-17 win over Hayfield in the quarterfinals. Hayfield actually led 2-0 in this game. By the end of the first quarter Centennial led 13-2. That lead grew to 30-11 at halftime. Hayfield only had two points from the floor in the first half. The next time Hayfield scored from the floor came with under a minute to go in the third quarter. At that time the score was 42-14. The fourth quarter was more of the same for the Cougars with a 17-3 run.

Centennial only allowed two 2 point field goals all game. Hayfield had droughts of 12 in the first half and 9 and 13 in the second half.

AA SEMIFINALS
ALBANY huskies 52, HAYFIELD vikings 50

This had drama as well as a veteran Albany survived a pesky youthful Hayfield team 52-50. Fouls were an issue for Hayfield.

The St. Cloud Times, Austin Daily Herald, and Rochester Post Bulletin. The RPB also looks at the respect Hayfield gained.

HAYFIELD vikings 66, BYRON bears 40

For the second day in a row it was off to the Hiawatha Valley conference and this time Old Man Winter again tried to keep us away from Hayfield (OMW & I are now 1-1 with Hayfield). The cold winds were blowing outside with a ground blizzard making travel a bit dicey, but inside Hayfield was cooking as they beat Byron 66-40. Prior to the deep subs entering the game for Hayfield they were on pace for a record 133.3 pp100. The last ten possessions brought them down to a very respectable 120. Kiley Severson had a monster night in the paint for the Vikings with 26 points and a sizzling 216.7 pp100.

First off many may ask why Hayfield tonight? The fact is of the remaining Minnesota teams on my list of teams to see this was the best available game. Early in the day Coach Teas called and mentioned the weather report. He was lobbying for a game closer in the metro and away from the frigid northern blast descending on the state. The wind chills would be close to -25. In fact there was light snow from Owatonna over to Hayfield. However Hayfield will probably be the #1 seed in the 2 section in AA, a section I haven't seen much of this winter. I thought it would be good to see these teams before the state tournament and section to come. By odd circumstance these were the 3rd and 4th Hiawatha Valley teams seen this week.

Another odd fact: There was a boys varsity game going on at the same time at Hayfield in the new gym. The girls game was in the boys gym. The girls game was a make up game while the boys were playing Cannon Falls. So, with two games going on at the same time, the parking lot was full.

True to HVL form both teams were patient, deliberate, and looked for the best shot available for each possession. Right off the bat Byron, who won the tip, worked the ball for 17 touches before Hayfield got the ball. When the Vikings got the ball they also worked their offense, touched both sides of the floor and looked to get the ball inside. Severson started it off with two in the paint. Hayfield scored their first four possessions. They built the lead up to 17-5 as players like Leslie Wilson delivered nifty passes inside as the defense shifted over. Byron scored on five straight possessions. Jill Storlie, Byron's post, picked up her second foul with 5:06 left in the half and then had to sit. That is when Severson went off. She made the two free throws. That started a 10 straight points by Severson. On one possession she scored and was fouled. She missed the free throw, but Hayfield retained possession. Again she had a &1 opportunity, but missed the free throw. Again Hayfield boarded, but didn't score again. So Severson had 4 points and was not credited with a possession. When the run was over Hayfield led 31-11. It was 35-13 at the break.

There was not a lot of drama in the second half. Hayfield kept building and adding to their lead. The biggest margin came at 60-32 and they soon emptied the bench with 4:30 left. Byron was able to shave some off the margin, but at the end of the game Katelyn Kramer launched a deep three for Hayfield for the final margin 66-40.

And the clincher is she can finish. is strong, good hands, nice touch. uses both hands well. She did have gravey time with Storlie out, but also attacked, drew fouls against Storlie. defensively needs to pick up more d boards. needs to stop baseline drives.

There were too many baseline drives by Byron. Defensively Hayfield has to stop that action.

It was nice to see a team be able to recognize and feed the post.

Spent time sitting due to fouls. presents a big target.
