AA CHAMPIONSHIP
ALBANY huskies 62, JORDAN jaguars 52

Albany took the title game this year and their was no dispute about it. Albany held on after a late Jordan surge for a 62-52 win. The Jaguars were spent emotionally and physically from their upset of Crookston.

There will be no more "what ifs" from the StarTribune. Here is the game reports from the St. Cloud Times. The Noreen family is spotlighted in the SCT.

In the third place game it was Crookston over Hayfield 75-68. Also from the Grand Forks Herald.

JORDAN jaguars 79, CROOKSTON pirates 74

For Jordan it was Chamber music. For Crookston it was a Chamber of Horrors.

Brittany Chambers set a new Minnesota State High School record with 47 points in a dramatic come from behind victory over the foul prone Pirates of Crookston. It was #1 Crookston's first loss of the year. Jordan rallied from 9 down in the second half.

Jordan started the second half on a 13-2 run to hold a 46-31 lead. Roosevelt cut the margin to 61-54 with 5:06 left, but Kiara Strickland fouled out. Jordan finished up with a 16-5 run. Brittany Chambers had 33 for Jordan including #2000.

Jordan, for a team that scored 76 points, got a slow start. The Jaguars were 1/11 with only two ending up as turnovers. Roosevelt struck gold from behind the arc. Starting off the scoring for the Teddies was AunDreah Aune with a three. She also closed with a three for a 16-7 lead and that prompted a Jordan time out. The very next possession Jordan got the ball inside to Leah Dietel who converted a three point play. It also started Kiara Strickland on a foul path that forced her to the bench. That started a 13-1 run by Jordan. For the rest of the game Jordan held the lead. Roosevelt cut the margin to 23-21, but Michelle O'Malley hit for two consecutive 3s and Jordan had a 29-21 cushion. Jordan led at half 33-29. Chambers had 13 by half.

The 13-2 run to start the second half but Jordan firmly in command at 46-31. Chambers added 7 during the stretch. Roosevelt took a time out to regroup. The offenses were operating in high gear with 9 combined scores on 11 possessions. Roosevelt was 5/6 during the stretch and cut the margin to 61-54 after a Suriya McGuire drive. Roosevelt made up the ground behind the arc. Tyesha Wright knocked down two triples and Kiara Strickland also delivered one. But at the 5:06 mark Strickland was saddled with foul #5 on a Leah Dietel &1 opportunity. She missed the free throw, but Kelli Buesgens got the rebound for Jordan. Emily Clark made a put back on the same possesson so the 7 point margin quickly ballooned to 11. Dietel added four more points in the run as they expanded their lead to 72-54. The Roosevelt distance attack was thwarted by Jordan and the Jaguars were headed to state for the second straight year.

4AA SEMIFINALS
Mpls. Roosevelt and Jordan jumped out to big early leads in their section 4AA semi-final games at Mounds Park Academy, and both advanced to the Saturday afternoon final at Delano High School. But that is where the similarities between the two games end.

Mpls. Roosevelt 67 St. Croix Lutheran 63

Roosevelt roared out to a 35-13 lead over St. Croix Lutheran at the 6:00 mark of the 1st half behind a mix of full and half court pressure defenses and the strength and leaping ability of Kiara Strickland and Suriya McGuire in the paint. Strickland and McGuire had already combined for (an unofficial) 20 points, 10 rebounds (5 on the offensive glass), 6 blocks, 4 assists and a steal by this time. The Crusaders were unable to get comfortable in their offensive sets and were forced to hurry their shots. The result was (unofficially) 6 for 24 shooting.

Still, St. Croix Lutheran was able to settle things down from that point forward, working their way back within 42-27 at halftime. Freshman guard Kayla Hulsebus scored 6 of the Crusaders’ 14 points down the stretch, and a put-back by Andrea Huessner at about 0:03.5 brought St. Croix within 15.

None of that seemed to matter as Roosevelt stretched their lead to 49-32 at 14:52 of the 2nd half. But the Teddies appeared to call of the dogs at that point, abandoning the full court pressure that previously had been so successful. Only on two additional possessions did Roosevelt apply full court pressure. And its half court zone was repeatedly penetrated by the Crusaders the rest of the way. St. Croix was able to easily penetrate the zone with passes to their posts at the free throw line, and good things usually happened after that. The Crusaders scored 8 points in a row to get within 49-40. Then after going almost 3 minutes without scoring, they out-scored Roosevelt 20-12 to get within 62-60 at 2:45. There were 3 consecutive 3s in less than a minute from 9:25 to 8:27. Huessner provided one of those and 3 more 2 pointers during the run.

But Strickland and McGuire scored the last 7 Roosevelt points, and McGuire provided the final exclamation point by blocking a St. Croix 3 with about 1 tick remaining on the clock. Strickland finished with an unofficial 25 points and McGuire unofficially with 13, 7 rebounds and 6 blocks.

Jordan 72 Mpls. Washburn 41

Jordan got out to a double-digit lead over Washburn at 17-7 at 10:52 of the 1st half. The last time Washburn was within single digits was at 33-24 at about the 1:00 mark. But Jordan scored the last 3 points of the half to lead 36-24 at intermission, and after Washburn opened the 2nd half with a free throw, Jordan scored 10 points in a row to open up a 46-25 lead and never looked back. Washburn never got the lead below 20 points after that, and the Jaguars finally doubled Washburn up at 66-33 at 5:14 of the 2nd half.

Brittany Chambers took control of the game from the beginning, hitting a 3 on Jordan’s first possession. By the time Jordan led 17-7, she was already 3 for 3 from the field, 2 of them on put-backs, with 3 rebounds and 4 steals. At the half she was 5 of 6 from the field with 6 boards, 5 of them on the offensive end, and a total of 12 points. Leah Dietel (unofficially) had 9 points and 10 rebounds at the intermission. Liz Shay was pretty much the whole story for Washburn with 7 for 16 shooting and 16 of Washburn’s 24 1st half points.

Chambers sat down at the 2:41 mark of the 2nd half with Jordan safely ahead 70-39. She had added just 4 more points in the 2nd half, for an unofficial total of 16, plus 5 rebounds in the half. Leah Dietel added 16 2nd half points for an unofficial total of 25, plus 17 rebounds total. She scored on a couple pretty give-and-go plays, a baseline drive and several put-backs. She threw up two or three 3s without success, however.

Jordan made some defensive adjustments at half-time, too and Shay was unable to score for Washburn in the 2nd half.

JORDAN jaguars 85, MINNEAPOLIS ROOSEVELT teddies 66

This was a tight contest when two Roosevelt players, Brittany Finley and AunDreah Aune, collided and left the game. Finley left on a stretcher. Aune needed 12 stitches. There was a 30 minute delay before the EMTs arrived. Jordan led at that point 52-50. Roosevelt went to their thin bench and competed as best they could, even taking another one point lead at 54-53, but Jordan eventually pulled away with a 27-8 run the last 8 minutes.

This could may have been a preview of the 4AA finals. Both teams appear to be the #1 seeds in the West (Jordan) and East (Roosevelt). Fans saw a three point barrage with a combined 19 on the night. Roosevelt cashed in 9 in the first half, 11 for the game. Jordan had 5 in the second half. For the second time in less that a week Jordan was in the out & about spotlight. This game they showed a much more intense, hustling, sense of urgency attitude compared to the passive performance at Holy Family. Roosevelt matched the intense, physical play.

Jordan started off up 4-0 after two second chance baskets. Roosevelt soon matched that total on a pair of Kiara Strickland baskets. The game was tied at 7 when Jordan went on a 12-3 run to lead 19-10. Brittany Chambers had 8 points in the burst including two 3s. The Jordan lead moved from 9 to 4 with the last nine point lead coming at 35-26 with 2:51 to go in the first half. Roosevelt finished the half with a 12-0 run. Roosevelt was maximizing their possessions with the 3 ball. They struck for 9 3s in the first half led by AunDreah Aune connecting on four. On top of that they had an old fashioned "&1." So 30 points came on 10 possessions. Roosevelt made four 2point field goals in the first half and two of those were second chancers. Roosevelt took a 38-35 lead on Suriya McGuire's 3. Roosevelt was hitting on 111.8 pp100 for the half, but their floor % was only .412. Jordan was at 100.0 pp100, and .486.

Roosevelt picked up right where they left off with another 3bomb, this time from Brittany Finley. That made the 5th Roosevelt starter to connect from beyond the arc. It also gave the Teddies a 41-35 lead. Jordan connected on 6/7 possessions as they nosed in front 48-47. It was the Dietel sisters leading the charge with 11 of the 13 points. Leah had 6 and Amanda 5. The lead seesawed back and forth with three lead changes and one tie. Emily Clark scored off a Chambers pass to put Jordan up 52-50. On the next Jordan possession the game took a turn. Finley and Aune were putting the squeeze on Chambers. She passed the ball to Laura Dietel, who was fouled by McGuire (her 4th). All of a sudden Roosevelt lost 40% of their starters with one teetering on the edge. After the 30 minute delay the game continued. Roosevelt again struck gold from behind the arc with a trey by Tyesha Wright to tie the game at 53. A combined five possession dry spell gave the ball back to the Teddies. Strickland stole the ball and was fouled. She made one free throw and Roosevelt had their last lead at 54-53. More Jordanaires were getting involved as Michelle O'Malley hit a three. McGuire tied it up at 56 with a drive. The game last was tied at 58 when Roosevelt's emotional gas tank came up empty. They had six empty trips in a 2:20 stretch. Jordan took the lead for good on a three by Amanda Dietel. That kicked off a 12-0 run. From 8:30 on Jordan scored 27 points on 16 possessions, a 168.8 pp100 mark and a floor % of .750. Amanda Dietel was on target three times three. She ended up with 11 of the last 27.

These two could meet in the section finals. I am sure it will be an action packed, physical contest with plenty of emotional subcurrents. The team that tightens up their defense and prevents the other from second shots and easy looks behind the arc will move on to the State tournament.

Here is hoping to a speedy recovery for both Aune and Finley. Aune had 12 stitches and will play against Edison tomorrow. Finley went off to HCMC for more treatment.

HOLY FAMILY fire 70, JORDAN jaguars 55

For the second night in a row, a higher rated team traveled to a hostile gym and came away with a loss. #7 AA Holy Family broke free from a a 43-42 game in the second half and went on a 17-3 run to burn Minnesota River leader, and #2 AA Jordan. The Fire was flaming hot in the second half and now both teams are tied for the conference lead.

This game was broadcast on the internet by Crystal Clear Sports. You can see for yourself the action as it is archived.

It took a while for either team to find the bottom of the basket as it took a combined 10 possessions before HF scored. HF maintained their lead throughout the first half. Jordan had to battle uphill all game. One thing that struck us was that HF was quicker to the ball as a team. It seemed to us that their were some rebounds that should have been to Jordan, but HF was hungrier. To sum it up the Fire had more desire. As it was HF built a 14-8 lead after a transition basket by Lindsay Bruns. Jordan cut the margin to one with five straight points from Leah Dietel. HF scored on their next possession and proceeded to go on a 6-0 run. HF maintained that lead the rest of the half. Jordan was using the long ball to stay in the contest. The Jaguars connected on four treys. It was HF up at half 29-24.

Jordan came out with more determination to start the second half. The Jaguars scored on four of their first six possessions with Brittany Chambers scoring four of the 8 Jordan points. Emily Clark knocked down two charity tosses as Jordan took their only lead 32-31. That did not last more than one possession. Ally Gerads drove in to give the lead back to HF. The first half didn't provide much offense, and now it seemed that the faucet was left running. Both teams traded points for 7 of 8 possessions. HF led 45-42 at that point with 9 minutes to go. Then the Fire caught fire. They ran off 7 straight scoring possessions as their transition game burned bright. Usually it was Becca Friestleben finishing the break. She had 7 points of the 15-3 run. Joining her in the hot streak was Lizzi Traxler with 6. Traxler had three of the five defensive wraps in the key surge. Stretching back it was an 8/11 offensive sequence as Jordan didn't have any fire extinguishers, or fire insurance. In the space of the space of three minutes the contest was decided. Jordan started making frustration plays, which didn't help matters. HF led 65-47 at the widest point with 3 minutes to go. Jordan had one last gasp where they cut the score to 65-53, but it was too little, too late. The last three HF possessions were spent at the line with five points added to their totals.

Jordan didn't look smooth on offense with the box & 1 preventing Chambers from running rampant. I already talked about how HF hustle and Fire Desire got to loose balls and rebounds while Jordan spectated. Both teams are in different sections with Jordan in 4 and HF in 5. If they were to meet again it would be in March in the State tournament.

Delivered the ball to teammates.

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
HF primarily used the box & 1 (the one defended was Chambers). Starting off with the 1 was Kaylagh Hollen. They also rotated others with Ally Gerads and Lizzi Traxler.
Once in a while HF used a 1/2/2 look that quickly reverted back to the box & 1.
Jordan played man most of the night.
