NORTH TARTAN 15s 77, ALL IOWA ATTACK RED 42

North Tartan, playing up, used their size and balance in beating All Iowa Attack Red 77-42. I got there late for the start of this contest due to the different court assignments. Five NT15 players had 9 or more points, two AIAR players had 9+. Laura Melquist had a big day with 19 points (when I charted) and combined with Kayla Hirt had 31 points between them inside. AIAR had 8 inside. It was already 11-5 for NT15 when I got situated.

NT15 ran off a 20-6 run to lead 31-11. AIAR took a time out to regroup. Part of the reason for the run up was three point plays on NT15 possessions. Gabby Boever hit a three, and on the next possession converted an &1. On another NT15 possession Melquist made the first free throw and Angela Christenson scored on the put back after the second missed. Melquist and Boever each had six in that run. AIAR had a seven possession drought at the same time. The most interesting play in this game came with 0.6 seconds left in the half. NT15 had the ball under the basket and called a time out. They brought in Angela Christenson who caught Rachel Banham's pass in the air, and shot in the air for a 36-19 NT15 lead at the half.

NT15 continued to blaze away at the nets. They scored on nine straight possessions in the second half, a 15-9 run. Hirt had six in that run. In another 15-6 run the NT15 posts (Melquist and Hurt) combined for 12 points.

This game was almost the flip side of the first game today. That game featured the high octane offense of NC Heat which set a record for pp100 (137.5) for older teams. In this game it was KLD testing the bottom of the margin with a 28.9 pp100, the second lowest this summer. KLD is a team made up of Rogers players. It was the only school based team in the 17u division. More often than not those teams are usually playing in MYAS events.

It was a slow start for both teams. AIA didn't score a basket until their 7th possession. KLD went longer---their 12th before finding the bottom of the net. It was 6-3 with nine minutes to go when AIA's Sam Abens came in off the bench and struck gold at the end of the rainbow with two consecutive threes. That ignited a 10-3 run. Even then AIA didn't crack the 20 point barrier until the second half. It was AIA up at half 18-10.

The shorthanded KLD team had to deal with another major drought in the second half with an 11 possession dry spell. Later in the game AIA started to get warmed up with a six straight possession scoring run. For the half KLD only scored once off their initial half court offense. There was not a whole lot of drama to report.

AIA lost to Metro Stars Black in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

What a difference a game makes. All Iowa Attack went from a 132.9 pp100 in the quarters to a 60.9 pp100 in the semis as IBCA Select dominated as much as AIA dominated Lightning Scarlet in the quarters. There was little doubt the direction of the contest as IBCA led 22-7 after one quarter. 8 IBCA players had 6 or more points led by Kionna Kellogg with 18.

IBCA had two former 2007 AIA players on the roster, but only one played. Katelyn Sunde played while Katie Schechinger had other obligations on Sunday. That isn't the only addition to the IBCA roster. Jaime Printy, who is headed to the Iowa Hawkeyes, has moved over from Iowa Elite. Printy missed out on last year's action due to a knee injury. Two players return from the IBCA 2007 edition--Trisha Nesbitt and Amber Kirschbaum. Two others have moved up from the 2007 second team---Jessica McDowell, who is headed to Northern Iowa, and Brittany Peterson.

Right away on the first IBCA possession the tone of the game was set. Nesbitt struck from behind the arc and the Red built on that lead to 9-0 before AIA managed to find the bottom of the basket. They had an 8 possession drought to start the contest. Three of their first four possessions ended up as turnovers. It was raining 3s for IBCA in the first quarter with four total made. Katie Gustafson ended up with two of the four. Meanwhile AIA only mustered two field goals the entire quarter. It was 22-7 after one.

IBCA cooled off somewhat this quarter with a 1/6 start. Again it was Nesbitt opening the quarter with a three. The hottest hand belonged to Kionna Kellogg inside with 6 points in a little over a minute. On her 10th point of the half, and 6th of the quarter AIA took a time out with the score 31-14. AIA did outscore IBCA the rest of the half, but still trailed 36-20 at the break.

IBCA opened the third quarter with a 15-5 run. Sunde delivered two consecutive long range missiles in the run. In fact IBCA had an 8/9 offensive stretch. AIA didn't have any massive drought, but IBCA was connecting on three 3s and one conventional three point play in adding to their lead.

IBCA definitely cooled off at the start of the fourth quarter with a 1/5 sequence. Catching fire for IBCA in the fourth was Riley Norman with 7 points. The final was 75-39.

All Iowa Attack connected on nine 3s during the game and their pp100 and floor % were the highest in both categories than anything seen this winter. Neither were summer records, but the 132.9 and .614 set the bar high already for the 2008 AAU season. Five players had double digits for the rebuilt Attack. Only two players remain from the 2007 AIA Jr. Eligible team and only one--Ally Jensen---played today.

The D1 level is the higher powered level, all the teams in this division were multi-school.

The Attack lived up to their name with two quick scores on their first two possessions. Mariah Duke got things started with a drive, and then Kayla Klopfenstein scored on &1 chance, but missed the free throw. The Lightning struck first from behind the arc with a Katie Barkley 3. But Lightning didn't strike twice until four possessions later, and then they were in a 1/9 sequence. The Attack had a 7-3 advantage during the mini drought. The Lightning ran off four straight scores late in the quarter to take a 14-13 lead. Again it was a three that did the trick with Skyler Johnson delivering. That was to be their only moment in the sun as the skies turned decidedly sunny for the Attack. Lucy Montgomery answered right away with a driving bucket and Jensen added a three to make it 18-14 Attack after one.

Midway through the second stanza it was 34-17 Attack after a three by Sam Abens. So it was a 21-3 run over six minutes. By half time the drama was missing as the Attack had a 42-22 lead. Abens had 7 for the quarter.

The Attack continued with the hot had with an 11/16 sequence for the third quarter. For the quarter alone the Attack was hitting on the 150 pp100 mark. Abens connected on two consecutive 3s. The Attack also scored in the paint and off second shots. It was 66-39 going into the fourth. Leading the Attack in the third was Kirsten Lipps with six. However a Lightning player had 7 for the quarter--Mckinzey Sartorious.

The Attack added 27 more points in the fourth quarter as they scored on their first six possessions and 10/11. It was 88-45 with 3:15 to go. The fourth was hotter than the third with a pp100 of 168.8 and a floor % of .813. Jensen had 9 points in the final frame on her way to 19. The Lightning only connected on two shots, both 3s in the fourth. In the end the Attack more than doubled the Lightning 93-45.
