NEW PRAGUE trojans 40

If you asked the average fan Kennedy would not have been their first choice to win the Sweet 16 tournament this weekend. However Kennedy capped off the weekend by claiming the title despite injuries and absences. The unlikely champs used their grit and determination to seize the crown. They didn't back down from any challenge and proved to the basketball community that Kennedy has a few players that can rise to the occasion.

New Prague had been racing to fast starts in their other games in this tournament. In the championship Kennedy played a 2-3 zone and NP struggled from the floor at the start. Kennedy imitated NP's fast starts with six straight points on their first three possessions. NP didn't score until their 6th possession. At the quarter it was JFK up 11-5.

In the second stanza NP cut the margin to 14-13 after a Maggie Weiers basket with 4:17 to go. That was as close as NP would get the rest of the night. Kennedy was stuck in a 1/8 sequence at the time. Kennedy finished the half strongly with a 9-3 run. Aubrey Davis capped the half with a coast to coast spinning lay up at the buzzer for a 25-16 lead at the break.

Both teams were anemic to start the second half. NP was the only team to score in the first 12 combined possessions. Also Kneeland started to find the range from behind the arc to cut the margin to 27-21. Brittany Zins did one better drilling twice from behind the line to push the Kennedy lead out to 35-23.

In the last nine minutes NP made another charge to close the gap to 39-35 after another Kneeland three. Kennedy met the challenge, handled the pressure, converted on five of their last seven possessions to take the title. NP down the stretch sputtered with only two scores in seven chances.

Bailey Lund of Kennedy had 18 points in the win.

DE LA SALLE islanders 43

Kennedy bumped off DeLaSalle in the second semifinal 51-43. DLS had a plus 8 differential in turnovers, but that wasn't the deciding factor. DLS had four more assists, but that wasn't the deciding factor. Even second chancers were tied at 14 apiece. The difference in this game came down to the free throw line. BK had 30 free throw attempts. DLS only 6 for the entire game. Kennedy was more aggressive to the basket, and once the fourth quarter rolled around they milked the line for over half their points in that quarter. BK attempted 12 in that quarter alone.

The Eagles scored 9 unanswered points in the first quarter to take an 11-6 lead. It was 18-13 at the quarter. DeLaSalle needed a GPS device to find the basket in the early part of the second quarter as they were caught in a 10 possession drought. At half time Kennedy led 27-19.

The Eagles maintained that advantage most of the second half. DeLaSalle did mount a serious challenge closing to 47-43 with under a minute left. A key rebound by Brittany Zins after a missed Bailey Lund free throw gave JFK some insurance points. Zins added a pair of free throws on the next possession to ice the game.

Semifinals
NEW PRAGUE trojans 62, CENTENNIAL cougars 57

The New Prague Trojans used a hot start, and a hot finish to upend defending Sweet 16 champ Centennial 62-57. Rena Kneeland connected on four 3s in the first quarter, three in the first four possessions, as the Trojans got off to a 12-2 lead. NP led at the end of the first quarter 21-14 and at half 39-32. Megan Nipe was doing the heavy lifting for Centennial with 18 first half points.

The momentum shifted to the Cougars early in the third quarter when Hannah Strop went down hard on her back and had to leave the game. For the next 14 possessions NP mustered up only one point, a single digit 7 pp100 in that span. Megan Waytashek had 8 points in the third quarter to help the Centennial cause. Centennial tied the game at 47 heading into the fourth quarter.

With 1:54 left Centennial led 56-52. Maggie Weiers started NP's comeback with a one of free throws after she was fouled on a second chancer. Amanda Wagner stole the ball and Kneeland converted off the NP press to cut the margin to 53-56. Another Centennial turnover gave NP a chance. Weiers cashed as NP regained the lead 57-56. Bridget Schuneman made one free throw to tie it back up at 57. Hannah Strop cashed in twice at the line to put NP back in front 59-57. Again Centennial coughed up the ball. Wagner was fouled and she knocked in both for a 61-57 advantage with 59 seconds left. Schuneman missed her pair of free throws. Kneeland did the same at the NP end. Waytashek was fouled for the Cougars and she converted once. Kneeland mirrored her for a 62-57 advantage. With 11 seconds left Nipe missed a pair of free throws and both teams traded turnovers as time expired.

Rena Kneeland had 20 for NP. Megan Nipe had 22 points to lead all scorers.

The big difference came on second chancers. NP had a 17-7 advantage on that stat. Three times NP scored three points on a second chancer including the first two of Kneeland's threes.

LAKEVILLE NORTH panthers 48

DeLaSalle grabbed an early 7-2 lead and used their defensive intensity to take down larger school Lakeville North 55-48 in the Sweet 16 quarterfinals. LN did close to 21-19 late in the second quarter, but a 7-0 run in the last three possessions right at the end of the half propelled the Islanders to a 28-19 half time lead.

LN did close to 38-31 late in the third quarter. A five possession drought to end the quarter gave the Islanders an opportunity to expand their lead. A three by Jamelia Hudnell gave DLS a 41-31 advantage headed into the fourth quarter. LN closed once again to 41-35 in the fourth quarter after a pair of free throws by Kaiya Sygulla. The LN surge seemed to awaken the DLS offense. The Islanders scored on the next three possessions on a 7-0 run to lead 48-35. DLS held on to that advantage the rest of the game.

CENTENNIAL cougars 59, HAYFIELD vikings 17

Defending Sweet 16 champion Centennial had their transition game in high gear in a 59-17 win over Hayfield in the quarterfinals. Hayfield actually led 2-0 in this game. By the end of the first quarter Centennial led 13-2. That lead grew to 30-11 at halftime. Hayfield only had two points from the floor in the first half. The next time Hayfield scored from the floor came with under a minute to go in the third quarter. At that time the score was 42-14. The fourth quarter was more of the same for the Cougars with a 17-3 run.

Centennial only allowed two 2 point field goals all game. Hayfield had droughts of 12 in the first half and 9 and 13 in the second half.

BECKER bulldogs 53, BIGFORK huskies 50

This was the tightest game I charted today with Bigfork having a last second chance to tie the contest at the buzzer.

Becker held a 17-16 lead at the end of the first quarter thans to a three at the buzzer by Heather Fahsl. The Bulldogs started the second quarter with an 0/8 sequence. Becker seized a 27-20 lead late in the second quarter after Bigfork went on a 1/11 sequence. The Bulldogs led 29-23 at the break.

Bigfork trailed 38-31 with 3:44 left in the third quarter. They struggled from the floor with a 1/9 sequence. The Huskies tied the game up at 40 with a 9-2 run to close the quarter. Becker led most of the fourth quarter, with their largest margin 51-46 with 1:40 left in the game. Two quick scores by Bigfork cut the margin to 51-50. Becker missed a pair of free throws, but Bigfork couldn't convert on their next three possessions and Becker added two free throws in their last two possessions to move on to the quarterfinals.

This game had rallys, comebacks, physical play and defense. In the end Kennedy, despite playing without starting point guard, and future Gopher, Shakila Boler and starter Alexis Holt beat New London-Spicer 45-39.

JFK won the race to ten with a 10-2 lead. NLS tied the game at the end of the first quarter with an 8 point flurry in their last three possessions of the quarter. Justine Dammermann and Taylor Thompson hit back to back 3s to narrow the gap. NLS had a 13-10 lead in the second quarter. That margin was the biggest by either teams. Kennedy knocked down a three on their last possession of the second quarter to lead 21-20 at the break.

Kennedy used that momentum at the start of the third quarter to build a 27-20 lead. NLS turned the tables with a 6/7 offensive sequence and 14-2 run. Michelle Hanson had six of the NLS points in that run. The momentum shifted at the quarter break. JFK scored the first six times of the fourth quarter on a 14-4 run. NLS closed to 41-39 with under four minutes left. That would be as close as they would get as they didn't score their last five possessions.

due to the volume of games, these reports will be shorter and I will come back to fill in the gaps. Thanks for your patience.

New Prague defeated bigger class Woodbury 59-38.
The Trojans quickly jumped out to a 14-3 lead with a 7/8 offensive sequence. NP scored the first five times they had the ball. Brit Rynda and Maggie Weiers each had six points of the first 14 for NP. Woodbury put the clamps on NP toward the end of the first quarter. After an initial 175 pp100 in their first 8 possessions, NP cooled considerably with a 27.3 pp100. Woodbury tied the game up at 19 with two free throws by Jessica Thone. Amanda Wagner made one free throw to finish the half with New Prague clinging to a 20-19 lead.

In the second half NP had a slight advantage in the first half of the third quarter, but put the pedal to the metal with five straight scores including two threes in a 11-4 run. NP won the quarter 21-9 to lead 41-28. Woodbury couldn't climb out of that hole as NP again won the quarter 18-10. Rena Kneeland had 12 points to lead NP.

NORTH TARTAN 15s 56, DAKOTA SCHOOLERS 41

North Tartan 15s kept up with the theme of the day by grabbing the early lead (19-6) and also overcoming missing players--Sari Noga was out due to surgery, Rachel Banham was out due to an Achilles injury, and Ameshia Kearney, and Kayla Hirt were with North Tartan Larson down in Nike Nationals--in the silver championship over the Dakota Schoolers. The Dakota Schoolers were the only non -Minnesota team to make the finals today.

NT was on to start the first half. You wouldn't know NT15 wasn't at full strength and playing with three players that were added specifically for this tournament. NT was scoring at a sizzling 131.3 to start the game. Katy Winge had the hot hand early with 9 first half points. NT15 had two sequences where they scored four straight times. On the defensive end Gabby Boever had the Schoolers in detention with 5.5 defensive stops.

The inevitable cooling off for NT15 started toward the end of the first half. They only scored twice in the last seven possessions. Combined with a 2/9 start of the second half NT15 cooled down to a mild 50 pp100. In the interim, the Schoolers only made up one point. NT rekindled their hot hands and went on a 6/7 offensive sequence. DS never took the deficit to single digits.

NT15 used their quick hands on defense to keep the Schoolers off rhythm all day. There were 21 DS turnovers to only 8 by NT15. Also NT15 had the best passing game of any of the four games I charted today. Four NT15 players had above four assists.

In keeping with today's theme of jumping to early leads, the Metro Stars 15s had leads of 10-2, and 19-7 in a physical battle with the Suns. The Suns had droughts of six, and closed the half with 10 empty trips. To illustrate the point the Suns only had one assists (using my liberal standard) in the first half. That sluggish start would come back to haunt them. Grace Veker had nine points at half time for the Stars.

The Suns rose in the second half to the challenge overcoming a 28-16 halftime deficit. The Suns best run came with a four straight possession scoring sequence. However they left two points at the line as they only were 50% at the line. The Suns came as close to four points three times, the last coming at 48-44 with 2:30 left. The Suns had one crack to cut it further, but missed the chance. Erica Gress then made an &1 on the next Stars possession to bump that lead back to 51-44 with 1:51 left.

The physical nature of the contest went both ways. Luckily there was no Sparks vs Shock incident. The Suns left 11 points at the line. The Stars had a 17-10 advantage on second chancers.

Metro Stars 15s concluded July on a hot streak. They lost the first game at the End of the Trail tournament in Portland, OR. After that they ran the table winning the consolation title there, winning their division in Chicago, and then winning this title today.

NC Heat, despite not having two recent All tournament selections in Memphis, beat MN Stars Borowicz for the third time this summer 55-49. Again NCH started out with a 17-7 lead and withstood a hard charge by MSB in the second half to take the championship. Tayler Hill again showed why she is considered the best player in the state with 21 first half points as NCH led 32-22.

In the second half Leah Dietel of MSB came out with two straight 3s to cut the deficit and give renewed juice to the MSB chances. MSB closed to 37-36. They held NCH scoreless for four possessions, but failed to take advantage of that down time. Brittany Chambers did tie the game at 39, but then MSB went scoreless for three possessions. Jen Hill, Tayler's cousin, made two free throws to start a 6-0 run. The last four of those points came on second chancers. Tayler Hill ended up with 28 points for the game.

MIDTOWN LADY MONARCHS 55, MN STARS MARTIN 34

The Midtown Lady Monarchs took a time out trailing 4-2 in the Bronze championship game. Whatever was said in the time out should be bottled and sold to coaches nationwide as the Monarchs went on a 29-2 run to zoom past MN Stars Martin 55-34. MSM upset North Tartan 13s yesterday with sharp shooting. Today those shots weren't falling. The 1/24 sequence put MSM in to big a hole. To put it in pp100 terms MSM pp100 in that sequence was 8.3; MLM were clocking in at 126.1 pp100. MLM started off that burst with five straight scores. The Monarchs didn't stretch together another five possession sequence again, but avoided the devastating droughts. By half time it was 36-11

MSM did make a comeback in the second half with a 17- 6 run. That was the closest MSM got in the second half at 42-28. The rest of the game MLM held an 11-6 advantage.

Bethany Doolittle led MLM with 20 points and Diamond Lane added 17 for MLM. Tori Rule was close to a triple double with an sky high 16 defensive stops, 8 points, and 9 assists.

Oddly enough in this game MSM had a 13-7 advantage on second chancers. Also this was the "fastest" game of the four championships with 66 possessions per team. (the other totals were 55, 56, and 63). There was a lot of energy involved with balls careening hither and yon.

Alyssa Kerkhoff had 26 points including five threes in a MN Stars Carlisle 76-48 win over HLC of Wisconsin. MSC used their hot shooting to race to a 32-13 lead in the first half. It was 38-22 by half. HLC kept the momentum they built up late in the first half to cut the margin to 40-31 early in the second half. MSC soon cranked up their offense with 8 straight scores and a 17/18 sequence to win going away. HLC only had one substitute.

MSC had all five of its starters in the MN Elite camp all star game on Friday.

Fox Valley of Wisconsin had an early lead against MN Stars Smith at 6-2, but MSS turned the tables to hold a 19-12 lead. FV closed to 30-29 early in the second half before MSS regained their momentum. Soon it was 45-31 for MSS. FV wasn't done yet as they close to 47-44 with 2:31 left after a three by Megan Wenig. Lauren Safranski finished strong for MSS with seven of their last nine points. Brittany Thiesfeld led a trio of MSS players in double digits with 13 points. Megan Wenig led both teams with 14.

Today the games I charted ranged from the young to the teams I haven't seen that much. It was also a MN Stars kind of day. All Three games I saw feature MN Stars teams and all three were victorious. Also all three games were on court five.

In the first contest I charted, MN Stars Martin connected on eight 3s as they topped #1 North Tartan Hedstorm 70-60. MSM broke free from a 19-18 contest with a 16-0 run late in the first half. MSM had three 3s in that burst. MSM led 40-24 at the half. NTH did come back with their own 16-4 run in the second half to close to 57-53 with 3:35 left. Rebecca Dahlman had 8 points in that NTH run. That was as close as it was going to be. Jade Martin responded on the next MSM possession with a three and delivered another one three possessions later as MSM pulled the upset. Jade Martin led MSM with 17 points. Dahlman had 19 for NTH.

NC Heat jumped out to a 17-0 lead after their first 9 possessions over the Indiana Gym Rats in the third game I charted at the Meltdown. NC Heat was not at full strength with Megan Nipe and Anne Berner still in Memphis waiting for connecting flights. The Heat showed why they have been in championship games all summer. By halftime it was 40-23 for the Heat. Katya Leick had 18 points to lead the Heat.

METRO STARS BLACK 69, NEN EXTREME 56

In game two today Metro Stars Black topped NEN Extreme 69-56. NEN stands for Northeast Nebraska. This was a pendulum game with both teams enjoying periods of dominance. MSB jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. It was then NEN Extreme's turn as they enjoyed a 19-6 run to lead 19-13. MSB finished off the half with a 20-3 run to lead 33-22 at the break. NEN did cut the margin to 49-40 in the second half. MSB responded with a 8-0 run for a 57-40 advantage with 5:50 left. NEN did get the margin back to a nine point deficit with time running out 65-56, but Brianna Tisch scored four points on the last MSB possession for the final margin. Sam Mehr led MSB with 13 points in a balance attack. MSB had seven players with six or more points. Nicole Rauner led all scorers with 17 points thanks in part to five 3s.

One odd fact in the game: MSB went to the free throw line 24 times while NEN took two free throws.
