BREAKDOWN FALL LEAGUE

CHAMPLIN PARK rebels 29, ROGERS royals 28

Ashley Metcalfe made her second free throw with 3.5 seconds left to give Champlin Park a 29-28 win over Rogers in the first of two Northwest Suburban vs Mississippi 8 match ups. Rogers rallied from a four point deficit with two minutes left to tie it at 28.

Rogers played their deliberate, patient style but were missing Jennifer Dowd. CP was missing Jasmine Darden and Rachel Leitz as the hit and miss nature of fall leagues reared its head again.

Rogers scored first on the opening possession. CP soon connected with a trey by Abby McDaniel. The lead changed hands six times in the first half as neither team broke free. There also were four ties. Rogers had a six possession drought but didn't really lose ground to CP with only adding three points to break an 11 all tie. Rogers' Maria Laughlin tied it up with her first & one. The first half ended with a 16 all tie.

After both teams added two to their totals to start the second half. Both teams combined for 10 straight empty possessions. CP was the first to break their drought with an Ashley Witte basket. Rogers kept their drought string alive with a total of 8. Again Rogers didn't suffer because CP only added three points to their totals. With two minutes left CP led 26-22. Rogers on the next possession scored on another Laughlin &1. CP answered with two Schmidt free throws with 30 seconds left to make it 28-25. Rogers responded with a free throw by Megan Coleman. She missed the second and Laughlin grabbed the board and tied it up with a put back with 17 seconds left. The Rebels got the ball into the paint and that is when Metcalfe was fouled. She made the second free throw for the win.

Rogers had 18 turnovers for the game, 10 in the first half. CP only had 11 turnovers on the game.

ROGERS BREAKDOWN TOURNAMENT
BLUE DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP
ALEXANDRIA cardinals 42, ROGERS royals 40

Summer is a good time to see how the next season will play out. Which players will step up? How will teams function without the graduating class of 2008? In Rogers’ case they are also playing for new coach Jeremy Digiovanni. One of the main differences was in the size of the players, Rogers players, especially on the perimeter were wispy, while the Alex players were solid.

A word about the timing: This tournament was 18 minute running time; stop time the last minute of each half.

Alexandria beat the hosts to take the Breakdown Rogers Tournament 42-40. Angela Christianson scored 24 points to lead the Cardinals. Christianson also had 12 defensive stops for a double/double on the day.

Alex got off to an 8-0 start as they scored on three of their first four possessions. Rogers didn’t score until their 9th possession and that was on a Jennifer Dowd steal and lay up. Rogers ran off three scores in a row to close to 11-8 with 9 minutes left in the half. Alex again got hot with four scores in five possessions as they scored 10 unanswered points. Rogers went through another dry patch, this time 10 possessions before stopping the Alex momentum. At half it was 21-10. Chistianson had 8 at this stage.

Alex’s Gracie Bruzek scored from the top of the key with a three to make it 24-10, the largest Cardinal lead after one possession in the second half. The lead hung around 11 to 9. After an Angela Christianson 3, Alex led 37-25 with 6:20 left. Rogers turned on the after burners at about this time. They scored seven times the last nine possessions on a 15-5 run. Jennifer Dowd led the hard charging Royals with 8 points down the stretch. Rogers closed to 37-36 when Christianson responded with an acrobatic lay up &1. Christianson later added two more free throws on Alex’s next possession to finish the Cardinal scoring. Dowd scored on a put back to end the game, a little short for Rogers.

Both Christianson and Dowd play on North Tartan teams in the summer—Christianson with the 15s, Dowd with North Tartan Larson.

I saw this movie last night. Only tonight there was a different ending. Totino-Grace built up an 11-0 lead early and then held off a Rogers Rally to beat the second seed 48-40. Last night Rogers pulled a comeback out of the hat, down 10 with 5 minutes left. If Rogers was to pull the same trick again tonight in back to back games it would have been the equivalent of riding a unicycle across a high-wire juggling meat cleavers and not falling or dropping a knife. Rogers trailed at half 23-11.

After half time TG added to their lead with a transition lay up by Veronica Scott to give the Eagles their biggest lead at 25-11. Amanda Chesness tried to rekindle the magic from the night before with five straight points starting with a 3 from the top of the key to cut the score to 29-22. There was plenty of time for a comeback with 11:06 left. Yet TG didn't crack. They scored on their next four possessions and the lead popped back to 12. Again Rogers sliced the lead to 39-32 thanks in part to a four point possession when Casey Mann scored a lay up and had an &1 opportunity. She missed the free throw, but Jennifer Dowd got the board and scored. TG was ripe during that time with six empty possessions, three of which were turnovers. But Rogers soon followed with their own dry six, only one of which was a turnover. From the 4:20 mark all TG points came at the line. Rogers had opportunities still, but failed to seize the free throw chances (10 points--including the back end of one & ones--were left on the table). With 1:06 left TG settled back to the 14 point margin again after two free throws by Sasha McHale. Casey Mann added two 3s late but it was too much, too little, too late for the Royals.

A close game throughout. Becker took the early lead and held it until the 5:28 mark in the first half. Brianna Mastey of Becker and Casey Mann of Rogers led their respective teams early. Rogers took the lead at 17-16 and held it the balance of the first half, leading 26-19.The second half, Rogers built the lead to nine @ 36-27 only to see Becker come back and take a one possession lead at 42-41. Rogers quickly regained the lead and held it the rest of the game. Mann and Jen Dowd lead Rogers with 19 & 18 respectively. Brianna Mastey led Becker with 28.

Earlier I saw the second half of:
8AAAA Championship
Tech 45 Brainerd 39
Brainerd led at halftime 19-18. Second half was back and forth with Tech taking the lead at 35-34 for good at about the 4:00 mark. Tech's last 12 points came on ft by Jordan Sears and Erin Foley. Brainerd was led by Emily Theising with 18. She fouled out with 3:55 left and the score deadlocked at 34. Sears led Tech with 20 and Foley had 10. Tech held Megan Bates, one of Brainerd's leading scorers, without a point.

It was a happy birthday for Rogers' Jennifer Dowd as she made two free throws with 11.7 seconds left for the final margin in a battle between two well versed Mississippi 8 rivals. Dowd also had a key rebound with 3.1 seconds left. She also deflected an inbounds pass with 2.5 seconds left. This was Rogers second win over the defending AAA state champs. It is very likely they will both meet in the 5AAA finals.

Both these teams know each other inside & out. Both teams approached this game with heightened intensity. Maybe too much intensity. Both teams started the game with four straight traveling calls highlighting the adrenaline carousing through their veins. On the fifth combined possession the traveling string was broken....by a fumble. Camille Loughlin made two free throws for the first points of the game at the 16:32 mark. Rogers took their biggest lead of the night at 5-2 after a Dowd 3. Becker scored on three straight possessions, their longest string of the night and Brianna Mastey had four of the six points. That put the Bulldogs in front and they held that advantage most of the half. But points were hard to come by as neither team permitted the other to run rampant. There was not one transition basket the whole night. Rogers tied the game at 10 and proceeded to fall into a 7 possession drought. During that time Becker stretched their lead to 14-10. That lead held up at half 19-15. Brianna Mastey had 10 points at half.

Becker enjoyed their biggest lead at 22-17 after Rachel Gilbert scored on an out of bounds play where she was like Moses and parted the Rogers zone as she came down the middle. On The Royals next possession Loughlin hit a three from the right corner. That started a Rogers 3 possession run with Dowd adding a 3 to give them their first lead in the second half 23-22. Mann made a cut on the third possession for the biggest Rogers lead in the second half 25-22. The pendulum swung back to Becker with a 6-0 run capped by a Brianna Mastey rebound 28-25. Rogers regained the lead at 29-28 after a basket by Amanda Chesness. This started a stretch with two ties and three lead changes. Reyan Robinson delivered a three on the next possession for a 31-29 Becker lead. Dowd tied it getting her own rebound on a drive, but on her put back she used her left hand. Jessie Althoff came outside and found Brianna Mastey inside for a 33-31 lead. Dowd was fouled and made both free throws to knot it up again at 33. In the next 9 possessions there were only two scores. There were many opportunities that slipped away in the last two minutes. It started with Brianna Mastey getting stripped by Mann. Rogers looked like they were going to hold the ball for the last shot. Loughlin was double teamed near the time line and lost the ball to Gilbert. Loughlin picked up her fifth foul with 23.7 seconds left. Gilbert made the front end of a one & one. Becker took a time out in the middle of the free throw. Gilbert missed the second. Dowd rebounded and found Chesness on the left side under the basket. She missed her chip shot and Brianna Mastey gathered the rebound. She missed the front end and Dowd once again snagged the d board. She was fouled with 11.7 left and converted both for the final 35-34 margin. The game however wasn't over yet. Rogers took a time out. Becker got the ball in and Robinson was fouled. She also missed the front end and once again Dowd got the all important rebound with 3.1 left. The missed front end must have been contagious because she missed her shot. Robinson rebounded and the clock said 1.5. After a referee discussion it was decided to add 1 second to 2.5. Becker took a time out. The ball was to be thrown in from the left side 3/4 court area. Alex Crapser threw the ball in and Dowd, with her fourth defensive stop, deflected the pass and stole the ball to end the contest.

Rogers is now 17-2, and 11-0 in the conference. It looks like they will take the Mississippi 8 title. Becker is now 14-5 and 8-2 in the conference. Rogers won the first match up 54-37 on Dec. 18. You can circle Friday, March 5th for the potential third meeting in the 5AAA finals.

Shelly Stemper, who has been out for over a month for Becker, was involved in the warm ups and is moving well. She will be ready for action soon. With her addition to the line up, the Bulldogs will be deeper.

What is it about traveling calls & Fridays? Last week I saw 13 combined traveling calls. Tonight there were 14. So 13.7% of the possessions ended up with traveling calls. Not counting 2nd chancers there were only 17 2 point field goals, or 16.7%.

Both teams start their post players high against the zones..for example at the blocks. That compresses the zone and makes it tougher to get shots in the sweet spot in the middle. If the posts start near the baseline it will force the defense to stretch and open the middle.

St. Paul Central junior, Theairra Taylor scored her 1000th point at the 14:35 mark of the first half in Central's 87-20 win over Arlington. She joins Kiara Buford (1545 points) and Georgie Jones (1206 points) in the 1000 point club. Jones, who had 10 rebounds, now has 937 career rebounds.

Despite not having Casey Mann or Jennifer Dowd in uniform today the Rogers Royals were able to do what no fall team had done yet---hit the gold standard in points per 100 and floor percentage. It was fitting it was the last game of the fall season. Rogers hit 102.3 pp100 and .558 floor percentage. Their defense was very successful as well. They held Rockford scoreless 14 straight possessions to start the second half---18 across the halves.

In the beginning however it was Rockford that was hot. They led 11-4 at their widest margin. The Rockets had a 4 of 5 scoring spurt in the early portion of the game. Rogers and the free throw line were friends for their first nine points. Amanda Chesness opened the scoring with a traditional three point play. After that it was all free throws up to point #9. Rogers finished up with four straight scores and claimed an 18-16 lead at half time.

After half time Rockford was held scoreless for 14 straight possessions. Going back to the first half it was a grand total of 18 straight dry spells. Rogers continued their hot hand with a four of five offensive sequence. Added with the first half that was a 8/9 sequence. All in all it was a 22-0 run. Rogers had offensive streaks of four and six.
