Battle of the Hardwood Saturday Results

BATTLE OF THE HARDWOOD RESULTS
Today was the second day of pool play in the Battle of the Hardwood at Woodbury. Most of the day was spent with the 17s. I did catch a game with the 16s. However it started with a switcheroo. I expected to see NC Heat vs North Tartan Larson at 11:45, but that was switched to 6 pm. Instead, Coach Teas and I watched NCH play the Minnesota Lakers. NC Heat was sizzling at the start of that game with 29 points in their first 17 possessions a 170.6 pp100 rate. By half time it was 57-19. In the end NCH was just shy of 100 99-42. Tayler Hill had another eye popping game with 25 points a pp100 of 208.3 and a floor % of .917.
In the second contest it was a 16u battle with 43 Hoops Zuck beating Triple Threat 46-40.
Game three All Iowa Attack stymied KLD a team made up exclusively of Rogers players 45-13. This was a 17u game.
Coach Teas & I left the gym for a few hours and returned to catch the NC Heat vs North Tartan Larson game. NTL was missing a few players. Amanda Zimmerman was back in Ballard wither her softball team. Their other Iowa player, Chelsea Poppens of Parkersburg, is recovering from the tornado that went through their town last Sunday. She apparently has a few stitches from that event. Also Jennifer Dowd was out with an ankle injury. NCH beat NTL 58-52. NCH led by as many as 13 late in the game. NTL cut the margin to 55-51 with under two minutes to go. The Heat made three free throws on their last four possessions to clinch the victory.

Tomorrow should be entertaining. If everything works out NCH will play MN Stars Borowicz in the semis at 1 pm. The 16 tournament should also be competitive.

HEARD ON THE STREET
Alexis Holt of Bloomington Kennedy has an ACL injury and should be ready by November.

Elle Queen will be at Dayton next year. Queen played her high school ball at Minnetonka and attended Colorado State this past season.

I will have full out & about reports during the week.

Next up: tomorrow.

The Week That Was #9: Deja Vu

#3 posting 5.30.2008
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

THE WEEK THAT WAS #9: DEJA VU
If this weeks winners seem familiar they should be. In week six Team WI Select Samuels, Laura Petersen, Nicole Griffin and Katie Wolff all walked off with awards that week. They did so again this week. The only newcomer is appropriately (and a requirement) a newcomer---Corrinne Miles of Fridley. Every one else I had seen previously including Erin Green two years ago when Fridley played North Branch.

Saturday started off with the MYAS and since it was the Memorial Day weekend the calendar is pretty light. It will really pick up around mid June. Saturday at North St. Paul it was a strictly High school feel with Minneapolis South sweeping the competition. South and Barnum both were involved in the state tournament. It should be noted neither team was anywhere near full strength with their roster. Barnum only had six bodies for the three games.

Sunday it was across the St. Croix River into Wisconsin for the fourth time this year, the third in Menomonie. The storms that swept through didn't stop the action on the court. The sirens were blaring and the games went on. I watched the storms progress with the custodian on his computer in his office. The storm action was north of 94, away from UW Stout. As far as the action on the court most of the teams in the 8 team 17 division I had seen before. Only two new squads--HLC from the Eastern portion of Wisconsin and Southern Minne Magic 19---were charted. SMM19 had a few players that had played either D3 or CC ball this past winter. They didn't have a practice before the tournament and Team WI Select Doucette stopped them in the semis.

NUMBER CRUNCHING
Here is what the two tournaments combined looked like for the weekend
Event, (games) pp100, floor %
North St. Paul, MYAS (3) 75.86, .351
Menomonie, Wisconsin (3) 80.81, .381
Average for the year (67) 80.18, .380
As you can see the Stout event is almost dead even with the averages for the year.
For comparison the high school games I watched this year had scores of 81.53 and .394, slightly better execution that the spring ball.

WEB PROGRESS
I am trying to get the hang of putting together a website. Right now it is mainly organizing pages and design.
I have a domain name, but I am not releasing it until things are ready to fly. It is an interesting process.

THE WEEK AHEAD
This weekend the big event is at Woodbury with the Battle of the Hardwood. Five of the top teams are in the 17 bracket with #1 NC Heat, #2 MN Stars Borowicz and #4 North Tartan Larson headlining. The event gets off to an interesting start with NC Heat facing North Tartan Larson tomorrow at 11:45 am.
The 16 bracket is loaded too. It has the 7, 9, 10, 12, 16, 18 plus the top two teams in the 15 division--North Tartan 15 and Team Iowa.
The 16 finals are at 4:45 pm on Sunday with the 17 finals to follow at 6 pm on the same court.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
The first three time winner this year Team WI Select Samuels had to pull a rabbit out of their hat to get the win. They trailed by five with under a minute in the championship to their civil war rival Team WI Select Doucette. TWSD led most of the game except for one brief time in the early part of the second half. TWSS relies on defense and grit. They don't quit. Trailing by 13 in the first half many teams simply fold up their tent. They kept battling. Down 5 with a minute to go many teams pack it in. TWSS looked for ways to win.
They will be tested in the upcoming weeks when they play in the Summer Jam, down in Ames and in Chicago.
Photo: Coach Samuels after the overtime win over TWSD. photo by kja.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The first player to win the award twice this spring/summer Laura Petersen is a stealthy scorer. She is also a clutch performer. She hit a three to narrow the margin to two near the end of regulation and then nailed the game winner, again behind the line. She is a big perimeter and has been consistent in the events I have charted so far. If she keeps on making noise she won't be stealthy but will be on everyone's radar.

To make the teams remember the rules:
#1. I need to see the player
#2. Player needs to have 6+ possessions
#3. Player needs to be over 100 pp100
#4. Player needs to be over .500 floor %
#5. If I see a player in two games the numbers are added up and the average used.
Some players didn't make the cut due to the 6 possession rule. Some had great numbers, but only five or four possessions

FIRST TEAM
Sam Barber, Team WI Select Doucette (DC Everest)
Mallory Cramer, Minneapolis South
Erin Green, Fridley
Laura Petersen, Team WI Select Samuels (Osseo-Fairchild, WI)
Katey Wrobel, Team WI Select Doucette (Osseo-Fairchild, WI)
Special Mention
Nicole Griffin, Team WI Select Samuels (Milwaukee Vincent)
Sam Hoyt, Team WI Select Samuels (Durand, WI)
Tyisha Smith, Minneapolis South

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
Nicole Griffin is the first player to win this honor this spring/summer three times. At 6-6 she has a great wing span and alters shot trajectory as you would expect. She also gets down on the ground and gets after loose balls. Griffin is wiry, a tough competitor and also a clutch performer too on offense. She made the game tying basket at the end of regulation.

FIRST TEAM
Anna Cole, Team WI Select Doucette (Mondovi, WI)
Mallory Cramer, Minneapolis South
Nicole Griffin, Team WI Select Samuels (Milwaukee Vincent)
Shayla Kuehl, HLC (Hustisford, WI)
Tyisha Smith, Minneapolis South
Special Mention
Kaycee Charette, Team WI Select Doucette (Prescott, WI)

DISTRIBUTOR OF THE WEEK
Katie Wolff is a two time winner of this award. Wolff, of Team WI Select Doucette, had 9 and 7 assists in the two games I charted. She gets the ball to the right people.
Special Mention: Sam Hoyt, Team WI Select Samuels.

NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
With all the awards being passed out on Sunday there was one detail that was overlooked---newcomer. To get this honor the player had to be seen for the first time this week. That eliminated many from the Wisconsin side of the action. Even players for HLC and Southern Minne Magic 19 had been seen previously. That leads us back to the MYAS North St. Paul event. The winner this week is Corrin Miles of Fridley. She is athletic and needs to polish her ball skills, but there is good upside with her length and quickness.

Out & About: Team WI Select Samuels/Team WI Select Doucette

#2 posting 5.29.2008

This game took place on Sunday, May 25, 2008
UW Stout, Menomonie, WI
MEMORIAL DAY CLASSIC
TEAM WI SELECT SAMUELS 52,
TEAM WI SELECT DOUCETTE 50 OT

Team WI Select Samuels rallied from five down with less than a minute to go to tie the game and then pushed through in the two minute overtime for a dramatic 52-50 win over their sister squad. TWS Doucette led from the opening tip in a heart breaker. A few weeks earlier in the Wisconsin AAU State Tournament TWSS beat TWSD by 25.

TWSD changed their line up for the start of the game with Katey Wrobel jumping against Nicole Griffin. The smaller Wrobel controlled the tip and Kaycee Charette scored a lay up off the jump. TWSD would not trail the entire first half. TWSD jumped out to a 9-2 lead despite one time out from TWSS. Wrobel was the impact player in the first portion of the game. She directly attacked Griffin and got her in to foul problems. Griffin had to sit a majority of the first half. TWSS was forced to burn another time out after a lay up by Brittany Gregorich with 5:40 to go in the half and trailing 24-11. That was to be the widest deficit TWSS faced. Heather Kessler, two possessions later knocked down a three from the top of the key to start to turn the tide for TWSS. TWSS outscored their rivals 17-10 the rest of the half. A pair of Sams were the leading scorers at half for both teams--Barber had 14 for TWSD, Hoyt had 12 for TWSS.

The change in the second half was a ramped up defense, and Griffin not sitting for TWSS. In the first half TWSD had a 103.0 pp100. The start of the second half TWSD went 0/7 on their possessions and TWSS tied it up at 34. A steal and a lay up by Laura Petersen gave TWSS a brief 37-36 lead. A three by Cate Scholfield put TWSD back in front 39-37. That is where TWSD would stay, stretching their lead out to five. With 3:24 left Charette made two free throws to put TWSD up 48-43. Neither team would score in the next 8 possessions combined. TWSD wouldn't score again until overtime. With 2:15 TWSD went into a delay game. TWSS was forced to foul, but they were no where near close to the bonus. Hannah Betz made a key steal, but TWSS missed the shot. Another TWSD passing turnover gave the ball back to Samuels team. With the ball underneath their own basket, Sam Hoyt passed over to Petersen for a three in the right corner. A quick time out with 47.2 seconds left made the score 48-46. Katie Wolff was fouled at the other end, but didn't convert the front end. Sam Price got the rebound. The ball went into the 6-6 Griffin and she was bumped, jostled and harassed. She missed the first shot, picked the ball off the floor and scored and was fouled. She did not finish off TWSD in regulation however. Her free throw missed and Wolff tried a desperation heave that didn't drop. On to overtime.

Again, just like at the start of the game, Doucette won the tip. Sam Barber scored the lay up. After that TWSD was dry. On the first TWSS possession in overtime Griffin was fouled and made the first of two free throws. Barber missed a shot at the other end and Griffin controlled the board. Again on an out of bounds play it was Petersen sticking the game winner from the right corner from downtown with 28 seconds left. TWSD had two more possessions, but didn't convert. TWSS remains undefeated.

TEAM WI SELECT DOUCETTE 64,
SOUTHERN MINNE MAGIC 19u 42

Team WI Select Doucette set up a rematch with Team WI Select Samuels by beating Southern Minne Magic 64-42. SMM was a combination of two SMM teams. They had not practiced before the tournament. SMM did have four collegiate players. In the end it was the court time and practice sessions that helped lift TWSD to victory over the SMM squad. SMM at times played with question marks over their heads.

SMM scored on their first two possessions and led at one point 10-5. They were 4/6 in that offensive sequence, they were clipping along at 166.7 pp100 and a floor % of .667. Neither was sustainable. The veterans fell into a six possession drought. The Minnesota club did have one last flourish with a three by Shannon Renne to go up 17-14. That was to be their last lead. TWSD outscored SMM 19-7 the last 7:30 of the first half. Sam Barber was stoking the fire for TWSD. She had 7 of the 19 and scored the final five points of the half.

After a Camille Stenhaug three cutting the margin to 33-27, SMM lapsed into an offensive coma with 10 straight empty trips, half of which ended in turnovers. By the time SMM found the bottom of the basket again, TWSD tacked on 11 more points to lead 44-27. SMM had other droughts in the second half of 5 and 6. The last six were at the end of the game. TWSD had 16 points on transition while had 4 points.

ST. KATE'S 7
Here is the 2008-2009 College of St. Catherine's Women's Basketball Recruiting Class

The St. Kate’s Basketball team will bring in seven new players for the 2008-2009 season. The incomers will provide some height for the Wildcats which should help with rebounding problems from a year ago. “We were just not tall enough to win this part of the game,” noted Coach Gary Rufsvold, “The team was solid and played well to their strengths but we need to improve in the rebounding area. I believe our 2008-2009 recruiting class will make this possible.” The Wildcats also brought in a couple of guards to help fill the void of two senior wing players, Ashley Busch and Rachel Berglund.

Laura Beach is a 6-2 Center junior transfer from Montana State University at Billings. Laura will give the Wildcats a physical presence in the lane with her rebounding, shot blocking and scoring abilities. Laura played high school ball at Baker High School in Montana.

Laura Kalbfell is a 6-0 sophomore wing player from Lakeville South High School. At Lakeville Laura led her team in scoring and rebounding and was the team MVP. She was also Lakeville South High’s Athena Award winner her senior year. Laura played her first year at Southwest State University in Marshall, MN.

Josey Madler is a 6-0 junior post player from Baker, Montana. The past two seasons Josey played for Dawson Community College in Glendive. Her sophomore year at Dawson she averaged 10.5 points per game and seven rebounds per game

Janelle Christensen is a 5-6 first-year guard from Bemidji High School. She played the point guard and two guard for her Bemidji varsity team her last two years of high school. Janelle also played the guard position for a very talented Northern Lynx AAU program.

Justine Grady is a 6-0 post player from Mound-Westonka High School. At Mound Justine averages ten points per game her senior season. This will be Justine’s first year of college basketball after two years at the University of North Dakota.

Jessica Hoffman is a 5-11 first-year from Champlin Park High School. Jessica is a post player from a very good Northwest Suburban Conference. She was Academic All-State and All-Conference Honorable Mention her senior year.

Megan Zillmer is a 5-9 first-year guard from Crosby-Ironton High School. In High School Megan played on a team that won twenty games. She averaged double figure scoring her last two years and was team MVP, All-Conference, and All-Area her senior year. Megan is also a soccer player.

Out & About: Team WI Select Samuels/HLC

This game took place on Sunday, May 25, 2008
UW Stout, Menomonie, Wisconsin
Memorial Day Classic
17U QUARTERFINALS
TEAM WI SELECT SAMUELS 55, HLC 36

Team WI Select Samuels had 29 points combined from Laura Petersen (14) and Nicole Griffin (15) in downing HLC in the semifinals of the Memorial Day tournament in Menomonie. Defense again propelled TWSS to the win. They held HLC to 63.2 pp100 for the game. For the year all teams combined are at 80.15 pp100 in AAU.

HLC held a brief 4-2 lead after two possessions. HLC had problems finding the bottom of the net with the size advantage TWSS possessed inside. They had droughts of 6, 10, and another 6 in the first half. Not that HLC was small. They had decent size, but just couldn't connect. A key break point came with a 14-0 TWSS run to push the score out to 29-9. It was 35-13 at halftime. Laura Petersen had all 14 of her points in the first stanza.

In the second half it was Nicole Griffin's turn to take over. She made on basket with her back to the rim and two HLCers crowding her that was the a "did you see that" moment. She finished with 8 in the second half. TWSS pushed their lead to 41-15. TWSS wasn't immune to droughts. They slipped into an 8 trip dry spell while HLC enjoyed a 9-0 run to make it 43-30. That was the last real push as TWSS was soon back to a 21 point margin.

TWSS was missing two players: Brea Tinney of Osceola who is headed to the Wisconsin State track meet in three events and Whitney Rawden of Eau Claire North.

Out & About: Minneapolis South/Fridley

#3 posting 5.26.2008
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

This game took place Saturday, May 24, 2008
North St. Paul MYAS 17u
MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH tigers 59, FRIDLEY tigers 35

In the battle of the undefeated Tigers it was the city variety beating their suburban counterparts 56-38. In so doing, South won the North St. Paul MYAS event. The South defensive heat forced 26 turnovers while only committing 11.

Fridley led in this game early 7-2. After that, South went on a rampage. South finished the half with a 32-11 run. Fridley had a 10 possession drought after the score was tied at 9 and they never recovered. By the time the suburban Tigers scored again, the city Tigers had a 14-0 run in the works. Once South started to roll Fridley hurried their offense taking the first 18 footer that looked open. That only played in to the City Tigers hands. The tempo and pressure belong to South. Then the recriminations started. By that time South was up 34-18 at half time.

After an initial flurry at the start by both teams, Fridley cooled off. They had a 2/17 offensive sequence with droughts of 8 and 5. South had one minor drought of four.

#2 posting 5.26.2008
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

This game took place Saturday, May 24, 2008
North St. Paul MYAS 17u
FRIDLEY tigers 57, BARNUM bombers 29

Fridley used their fresher legs and a hot start to burst the Bombers 57-29. The Tigers roared on their first three possessions and lead 8-0 after their fifth. Erin Green came out smoking with two field goals on the first two Fridley possessions. She had 11 for the half and 17 for the game. Barnum was feeling the effects of a short bench. They had droughts of 5, 8 and 5 in the first half. By half time it was 27-13 Fridley.

Fridley opened the second half with another four possession scoring string and led 37-18. Six of their points in that 10-5 run came on second chancers. On their third possession of the half Liz Leighton scored on a second chancer and was fouled. She missed the free throw, but Erin Green was there to pounce on it and put it in. So in that one possession four points came via second chancers. The droughts weren't as severe in the second half for the Bombers. They did live up to their name with six 3 pointers in the game. They only made three conventional two point field goals all game. The turnover bug that ailed Barnum in the South game was not as evident in this game with 19 total.

Samuels Wins Comeback Civl War Game

#3 posting 5.25.2008
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

CIVIL WAR IN WISCONSIN
Team Wisconsin Select Samuels pulled out a gritty come from behind overtime win over in house rival Team Wisconsin Select Doucette to take the Memorial Day tournament in Menomonie today. A few weeks ago TWSS beat TWSD in the Wisconsin State AAU finals 65-40. This time TWSD was rested (no proms or other conflicts) and more than ready.

TWSS overcame a sluggish start and foul problems in the first half. TWSD led 24-11 at their widest margin in the first half. By half time TWSS narrowed that gap to 34-28. With 3:24 left in the game and TWSD holding a 48-43 lead things didn't look good for Samuels. But they held TWSD scoreless the last 6 possessions. The score remained 48-43 with less than a minute to go. Laura Peterson connected on a three after an out of bounds play to cut the margin to 48-46. Katie Wolff missed a front end of a one and one and Sam Price got the rebound. TWSS went into Nicole Griffin and she was jostled on her shot. The 6-6 center fought for the loose ball on the floor and put it home and was fouled. She missed the free throw and the last second heave by TWSD did not fall. So it was off to overtime at 48 all.

In the two minute overtime TWSD controlled the tip and scored a lay up. Griffin made one of two free throws to cut the margin to 50-49. TWSD missed on their next attempt. Laura Peterson again scored a 3 with under 41 seconds left to give TWSS the 52-50 lead. That held up the rest of the way for a dramatic come from behind win.

Earlier in the day TWSS beat HLC in the quarterfinals 55-36. TWSD beat Southern Minne Magic 19, a team that has collegiate first year players, in the semis 64-42.

I will report on these three games during the week in more detail.

Prior to the 17u championship game High Impact, a Minnesota boys basketball team coached by Jeff Buffetta, girls basketball coach at Mountain Iron-Buhl, also won in overtime similar to the TWSS situation. They trailed by 10 late in the game and tied it at the buzzer on a 3.

Also of note today...There was severe weather and the sirens were blaring around 6 pm. The severe weather was north of 94, a few miles from Menomonie. The odd thing was with the sirens just feet away from the gym door, the games continued on. There was no stopping the action, no rush to a safer place.

Out & About: Minneapolis South/Barnum

This game took place Saturday, May 24, 2008
North St. Paul MYAS 17u
MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH tigers 41,
BARNUM bombers 21

In a battle between two runners up in the last high school tournament it was AAAA South beating A Barnum 41-21. South held Barnum scoreless the last 18 possessions of the game after the Bombers took a 21-19 lead. South had four players that played quality minutes on varsity this year with Tyisha Smith an All Conference player. Barnum is young with three 8th graders on their short bench of six. Barnum only one starter (Bushey) and a few that played quality minutes.

Neither team was on fire. Neither team were clicking on offense. South however used their defense and bench to break Barnum in the second half. The first half was tight with Barnum leading early 8-4 after a pair of 3s. South took an 11-10 lead on their own three by Amy Miles and didn't trail the rest of the half. It was only 17-12 at the break. However Barnum had 15 turnovers at half, South only had 6.

A three by Katie Myhre from the left corner put Barnum in the lead at 21-19 with 14:49 left. After that 18 empty possessions as the Barnum legs finally gave way to the unrelenting pressure. South forced four straight turnovers and 15 in the last 18 possessions. For the game Barnum had 33 turnovers. South wasn't immune from droughts even in the second half. They one stretch of six.

South Triumphs

#2 posting 5.24.2008
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

TIGERS ROAR
The Minneapolis South Tigers won the North St. Paul MYAS 17u event today beating three teams. Most of the teams in this tournament were school based teams, but not everyone from the respective schools were there. For example South was missing Tayler Hill and Ameshia Kearney.

The first game featured two teams that finished second in the recent Minnesota State High School tournament--AAAA South and A Barnum. South led most of the first half, but Barnum, behind long range shooting, edged in front 21-19 in the second half with 14:49 to go. That was to be their last points as the Southerners finished with a 23-0 run and Barnum finished with a 18 possession drought.

The second game South beat the Hurricanes handily. However I was watching Fridley beat Barnum 56-29. Fridley earlier had beat the Hurricanes by double figures. In the Fridley/Barnum game the Tigers jumped out to a 19-5 lead as everything was clicking. The one sub Barnum team left a lot of energy on the floor in the South game.

It was a battle of Tigers in the championship. Fridley held an early 7-2 lead, but after that it went South quickly. The Southerners outscored the other Tigers 32-11 the rest of the half and at one point held the Fridley squad scoreless 10 possessions. South triumphed 56-38 in a fairly even second half. Tyisha Smith had 25 points for South in the championship.

I will have detailed out & abouts later in the week, maybe even as early as tomorrow morning. Maybe.

The Week That Was #8: Magic

#2 posting 5.23.2008
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

The Week That Was #8: Magic
This was the second week in a row with a Minnesota state Tournament. This time it was MYAS holding their state event. Here are the winners this week:
19 Gym Rats
17 Southern Minne Magic
16 Minnesota Dynamite
15 Lady Cats (MN Stars Jihad)
14 MN Stars Martin
13 Hopkins
12 MN Stars Wade (Farview)
11 MN Stars Nelson
The Minnesota Stars won four of the events over the weekend.

How do the numbers compare to the week before?
Tournament pp100, floor %
AAU 84.37; .400
MYAS 83.33; .384
If you look at just the 17s
AAU 86.72; .415
MUAS 86.03; .389
If you look at the championship teams
AAU (NC Heat/MN Stars Borowicz) 110.79, .518
MYAS (Southern Minne Magic/Triple Threat) 91.23; .412
So the differences are fairly small to begin with, but at the high end AAU clearly dominates with a pp100 that is 19.56 better that MYAS.

RECRUITING TRENDS
The trend this week, and for the past two weeks, is the verbals from the 2009 class going out to D2 schools. Four players, three from Minnesota and one from South Dakota have made collegiate decisions. That might not sound a lot, but consider that Minnesota has (so far) 43 from the 2008 class that are headed to D2 that means that 7% of the 2009 potential class has verballed in the past two weeks. I don't think 7% of the 2008 class had made a move to D2 at this point last May.
For South Dakota it is 1/6, using last year's numbers or 16.7% have made the decisions.

For the 2009 race the numbers overall look like this---
Minnesota 9
Indiana 6
Wisconsin 6
Iowa 5
South Dakota 5
Michigan 3
Ohio 2
Illinois 1
Nebraska 1
North Dakota 1
Utah 1
Obviously this will be changing.

THE WEEK TO COME
This is another brief weekend coming up with the action shifting again to Menomonie. Can Team WI Select Samuels continue their winning streak and be the first team to win three Team of the Week titles? Can Nicole Griffin win her third defensive player of the week honor? Find out soon.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
For taking the MYAS 17 title and holding Triple Threat scoreless for 10:30 minutes of the second half is Southern Minne Magic. The Magic trailed in that championship game and bounced back to beat the Threat. A strong inside presence controlled the boards. The week before SMM finished in a tie for 13th in the State AAU tournament.
Coach John Fisher and the Southern Minne Magic. photo by kja

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kiara Buford simply dominated as you would expect a D1 Gopher signee in the second half of the Gym Rats vs Minnesota Thunder game. She took over. She put the Rats on her back and lifted them to the semifinal win. For the most part the Rats were sputtering. Buford grabbed the game by the throat and stuck it in her pocket. She attacked the basket with a single minded purpose. She was the difference maker.
This is the third time this summer that a 2008 player has won the player of the week.

To make the teams remember the rules:
#1. I need to see the player
#2. Player needs to have 6+ possessions
#3. Player needs to be over 100 pp100
#4. Player needs to be over .500 floor %
#5. If I see a player in two games the numbers are added up and the average used.
This week I saw only four games so the pool of players is smaller. Also some players didn't make the cut due to the 6 possession rule. Some had great numbers, but only five or four possessions

FIRST TEAM
Caitlyn Book, Minnesota Thunder (Wayzata)
Kiara Buford, Gym Rats 19 (St. Paul Central)
Adrianna Ivanovic, Northern Lights 19 (Bigfork)
Karli Meyer, Minnesota Lakers (Adrian)
Alyssa Rushton, Southern Minne Magic (Rochester JM)

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
The defender this week is Yvonne Freese of the Southern Minne Magic. A hard hat physical player that corralled a lot of defensive boarders. She is not afraid of mixing it up. In two games I watched she snared nine rebounds both times.
Kiara Buford, Gym Rats 19 (St. Paul Central)
Thea Engen, Minnesota Lakers (Red Rock Central)
Amanda Iverson, Triple Threat (Waconia)
Yvonne Freese, Southern Minne Magic (Lanesboro)
Sam Lynn, Minnesota Lakers (Adrian)

DISTRIBUTOR
Seraene Levine of Minnesota Thunder receives this honor. She delivered 7 assists in the loss to the Gym Rats. Levine was involved in 32% of all points just with her assists.

NEWCOMER
Karli Meyer of Adrian is a small post (5-8) but she was quite effective slipping inside and doing damage in the paint. She sealed well, used her body to create space and knew the proper angles. She will need to work on ball handling and facing the basket to play beyond high school ball, but will be effective in posting up players up to 5-10.
