CONCORDIA ST. PAUL SUMMER LEAGUE

Minnehaha won the Concordia St. Paul Summer League with a sweep of White Bear Lake. The Red Hawks again rallied for the win in the first game and then broke free from a six all tie in the second to cement the win.

In the first game White Bear Lake led 11-1 with 6:39 left after a transition basket by Alexis Foley. Minnehaha took a time out and started their 13-2 comeback run. The Red Hawks were helped by 8 straight points off fouls. It was tied at 11 when WBL's Laura Davis made two free throws to go up 13-11 with 18 seconds left. Annalise Ballinger drained a shot from the right corner as time was winding down for a dramatic finish for Minnehaha, their third straight come from behind one point win.

The narrow wins were a thing of the past in game two. Ballinger again continued her hot streak with an opening 3 on the first possession. WBL matched that with three points by Hanna Iaizzo--one on a foul off an offensive rebound and two points the conventional way. It was 6 all when Minnehaha put the game into overdrive. They scored on 10/12 possessions including the last 7 in a row. Foul points accounted for 9 of the 19 points in the 19-4 run. WBL made a late three possession run, but the hole was too change the outcome.

Both teams were without key players, as every team I have charted this week has been. Minnehaha didn't have Katelyn Adams who is at 15u Nationals with the Suns Gregg, and Rachel Hansen is making progress in her recovery from knee surgery. It looks as if she will be ready to go at some point late in the fall. WBL missed Julia Dysthe, Rachel Regnier, and Carly Jensen, all three point weapons.

In the JV division St. Paul Central won the title. Jen'Von'Ta Hill turned heads for Central.

White Bear Lake surprised defending AAAA champ St. Paul Central in three straight games in the Concordia St. Paul Summer League tonight. Each win counts as two points in the standings. It was the first time SPC has been shut out in the CSPSL in over seven years. WBL shot and moved the ball with crisp passes, and crashed the offensive boards hard. They were also quick to loose balls. Central was infatuated with the 3 shot on offense and caught off balance on defense all night.

Central led early in each of the three games. In game one SPC led 5-2 after a Samantha Robinson-Ricks basket. The first game turned when WBL put together a 5/6 offensive string. In that string WBL used the long ball three times. Rachel Regnier drained two of them. Central closed to 17-14 after a Kyana Johnson transition lay up. Central had another crack to cut the margin with 2:11 left, but Theairra Taylor's shot didn't fall. The next WBL possession highlighted a key problem for SPC all night---second chancers. WBL missed the first chance, and Dani Potter was there to get the put back points. She did a head fake and drove by an airborne Sierra Smith. Game one ended 23-16.

Game two was a bit tighter. There were seven lead changes early. The game was tied at 15 all when Central's offense stalled. They had five straight empty trips. WBL had 9-0 run capped by a three point possession. In the CSPSL a non shooting foul gets one automatic point. Carly Jensen was fouled on a reach and later in the possession Sarah Schoenthaler made a shot. Central's press was no mystery for the Bears. They converted lay ups off it. Game two finished up 26-17.

In game three SPC led 11-9 when WBL broke free. Again SPC's offense withered away. This time the drought was 8 possessions. WBL had 10 unanswered points. Hanna Iaizzo had four points in that burst. SPC's interior defense was lacking and blocking out was rare all night. Players would leave their feet at the slightest provocation. The result was WBL stepped in closer for better shots. The other results was a sweep for the Bears.

In a Suburban East match up WBL overcame a sluggish start to beat MV 60-52. Both teams combined for 9 traveling calls....in the first half. WBL built a 17 point second half lead before MV cut it to six with two minutes left.

If you look at the pp100 for both teams you will see that neither was exactly on fire. However MV started the contest with two straight scores to lead 4-0. WBL also scored early and MV led 6-4 after four combined possessions. After that it got mighty cold mighty fast, mighty long. MV scored twice in 14 possessions, 9 due to turnovers. WBL struggled on the offensive end too with a 2/13 possession. The half wasn't over with droughts. WBL suffered through a 7 spot, yet MV topped that with 12. MV's last lead came at 16-14. On WBL's next possession they tied it on Stacy Dally's drive. Three minutes later Tanya Dickey made two free throws for an 18-16 advantage. The game broke open on the last two possessions of the half as Julia Dysthe connected on two treys. That pushed the margin to 24-16 for the home team. The first half was an exercise in offensive futility. WBL's pp1oo was 63.2 while MV was an anemic 42.1. Too illustrate the sloppy nature of play, there were 9 traveling calls (6 MV, 3 WBL). I don't expect that many traveling calls by AAAA teams in late January.

Dysthe hit her first shot in the second half, once again a three. WBL continued to put space between themeselves and MV. Hanna Iaizzo carried the baton after Dysthe. Iaizzo had the next 6 points for WBL. She ended up with 16 second half points as she delivered in the paint. MV again fell into the drought hole with a 10 possession empty string. By that time WBL led 40-27. WBL suddenly found the key to unlock the basket starting at the 8:30 mark. The Bears were 6/7 during that stretch and enjoyed their largest lead at 50-33 with 6 minutes left. WBL led 55-42 with three minutes left when they made a wave subsititution. MV took advantage of the new line up with Megan Lauck made it interesting by scoring 7 straight points, the last a trey from the right wing to make it 55-49 with 2:15 left. The time out and return of the starters stopped MV's momentum as WBL outscored the Mustangs 5-3 the rest of the way. The sloppy nature of play showed up even late as WBL had three turnovers (yes one was a travel) in the last six possessions. MV looked for the 3 ball and that option was done.

Park-Cottage Grove beat Cretin-Derham Hall 46-41. It was 26-21 at half. Katya Leick had 18, and Tina Fisher, who verballed Ohio, had 14 for PCG. Molly Geske had 16 points, all in the second half. Kendra Harris ended up with 12.
CDH played zone most of the night. PCG played tight man when the game got close.

MYAS GIRLS BASKETBALL FALL LEAGUE

RIVER FALLS wildcats 38, WHITE BEAR LAKE bears 35

On Sunday I traveled up to Forest Lake to watch a battle of Green unbeatens. And in a narrow give and take rally game it was River Falls surviving a last second flurry by White Bear Lake 38-35. The pp100s in this game didn't crack 70 p100. So it was a competitive game, if not an artistic success.

WBL led 6-3 after 7 minutes of running time. RF was mired in a 1/11 offensive sequence--a .091 floor %. RF had a drought of seven which WBL tried to match with five of their own. RF then had a 6-0 run to take the lead at 9-6. It was WBL's turn for offensive futility with a 1/12 offensive sequence and an even cooler .083 floor %. RF led 14-10 with four minutes left in the half when WBL awoke from its offensive hibernation. They outscored RF 10-2 to finish the half with a 4/5 offensive sequence. Hannah Iaizzo started things off with two straight baskets. The Bears ended the half with two 3s, the last by Tanya Dickey, her first points of the game. WBL led at half 20-16.

At the start of the second half WBL pushed their margin to 24-18. Then all the frozen offense started to thaw in a hurry for RF. The scored on five straight possessions as they enjoyed a 12-2 run. Four different Wildcats contributed with Tess Wells scoring four in the outburst. That forced WBL to take a time out. After the regrouping RF went stone cold dry for 10 possessions. Their 30-26 lead did hold up however as WBL could do no better than another 1/12 offensive string. Opportunity came knocking and no one was home. RF pushed their margin to 36-31 with 1:09 left as WBL took another time out. The rejuvenated Bears roared out of the break with two straight scores, a post up by Emily Newman and a steal and lay up by Dickey to make it 36-35. Tessa Feyereisen, who led both teams with 12 points, knocked down two free throws with 35 seconds left for the final margin. WBL had two more cracks at a potential tie, but the shots didn't drop.
