BREAKDOWN FALL LEAGUE

LAKEVILLE NORTH panthers 38, EASTVIEW lightning 36

Lakeville North led twice in this contest, at 2-0 in the beginning and then at the end of overtime when Rachel Banham scored on a lay up. Eastview led by as many as 10 in the first half and 7 in the second half. Kelsie Ammann tied the game for LN with a three with under 30 seconds to go in regulation. This was LN's second straight OT game of the day. Earlier the Panthers beat Richfield in OT 47-45 on a Allie Seurer basket.

This was a Lake Conference game in November. Both teams are long time rivals going back to the days of Podominick vs Broback. This also was a story of the line. LN controlled the free throw line with 21 attempts to only 7 for Eastview. The Lightning controlled the 3 point line with four from beyond the arc. Sam Mehr hit two consecutive 3s in the first half to put Eastview in front 6-2. As stated above LN scored first on a Cassie Rochel basket. After that the Panthers were 1/9 with their chances. Eastview wasn't much better with a six possession drought. The Lightning snapped out of it first with three straight scores capped by a Kelsey North 3 to pull out to a 13-6 lead. Eastview's biggest lead came at 18-8 with under 3 minutes left in the half. LN got their wind back (after the Richfield OT game) as they scored three straight times with Banham scoring twice off Kaiya Sygulla steals on the full court press. That cut the Eastview margin to 18-14. At the half Eastview led 20-14.

LN scored the first five points in the second half to cut the margin to 20-19. A three by Amanda McAlpine gave the Lightning some breathing room. This started an avalanche of points with LN scoring on four straight chances and Eastview converting on four of five possessions culminating in a trey by Heather Duehn from the top of the key to make it 30-23, their largest lead in the second half with ten minutes left. LN outscored Eastview 13-6 the rest of regulation. LN tied it at 36 on a three by Kelsie Ammann with 30 seconds left. Eastview was working it down to the wire for a shot when Rochel blocked the attempt and fired it to Sygulla streaking down court. The horn went off before any shot could be attempted.

In the one minute overtime there was only one score. Eastview and LN each had two cracks at points. Eastview missed a trey, LN came up empty on a one & one chance. Eastview again worked the ball down to the end. This time Sygulla made the steal and Banham converted for LN's second straight OT win.

LAKEVILLE NORTH panthers 48

DeLaSalle grabbed an early 7-2 lead and used their defensive intensity to take down larger school Lakeville North 55-48 in the Sweet 16 quarterfinals. LN did close to 21-19 late in the second quarter, but a 7-0 run in the last three possessions right at the end of the half propelled the Islanders to a 28-19 half time lead.

LN did close to 38-31 late in the third quarter. A five possession drought to end the quarter gave the Islanders an opportunity to expand their lead. A three by Jamelia Hudnell gave DLS a 41-31 advantage headed into the fourth quarter. LN closed once again to 41-35 in the fourth quarter after a pair of free throws by Kaiya Sygulla. The LN surge seemed to awaken the DLS offense. The Islanders scored on the next three possessions on a 7-0 run to lead 48-35. DLS held on to that advantage the rest of the game.

Rachel Banham and Cassie Rochel each scored 17 points in Lakeville North's 54-42 win over Benilde-St. Margaret's in the MYAS Gopher State Prep Showcase. LN got out to an early lead, but BSM was able to break the string started yesterday where the winning team had enough points to win by halftime. Today LN led at half 34-21. The second half was tighter, but BSM couldn't make up ground.

This tournament was divided into two pools of five. Both teams were undefeated in pool play. This match up also was a clash of classes with the bigger class winning. Of the three clash of classes this weekend the bigger class won each time.

LN scored six straight times after a miss on their first possession and led 13-3. The one two punch of Rochel (7) and Banham (6) had all the points. The Panthers employed a full court press that bothered some of the BSM players. In the first half LN forced 8 turnovers, with 11 more in the second half. LN substituted all five starters out in the wave pattern through out the game. For four possessions group two scored once, while BSM scored three times. Group one came back in and the next 10 possessions LN scored six times. BSM did close out to 24-18. Four straight scores by LN pushed the lead out to 34-20 at halftime. Rochel and Banham had 21 at the break.

LN scored three straight times to start the second half. That pushed their lead to 40-23. BSM went on a 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 42-31. LN had a five possession drought in that Knight ride. LN had their final push out to 52-34 (their biggest lead) before the final BSM push. Another five possession LN drought gave BSM some room to maneuver. In the end it was LN's experience and defensive pressure that got the job done.

Lakeville North opened the second half with a 15-0 run on their way to a 44-33 win over Hopkins. Cassie Rochel had 19 for LN in the win, including 7 in that critical second half run. Neither team was at full strength. Rachel Banham was missing for LN, while Hopkins was without Kara Elofson. The Royals upset #1 Eastview in the semis. In that game they had Laura Bruce and Tess Komarek. They weren't around for the finals.

Despite having a thinner bench, Hopkins had the advantage early. They led 12-6 after a Jenna Lillemoe three. LN tightened up the game at 15-13. Hopkins had one more surge at 21-15 after Breanna Williams second steal and lay up. Williams had all 9 of her points in the first half. Then the Royal offense shut down for the last six possessions of the first half. LN edged back into the contest with four more points to close to 21-19.

The six possession drought didn't go away in the second half for Hopkins. The Royals had 8 more to start the second half for a grand total of 14 across two halves. LN opened the second half with 15 straight points (19 unanswered points going back to the first half). Rochel scored the first seven points of the half. Most of those points were set up by Kaiya Sygulla. The LN point guard had 8 assists on the night, 5 to Rochel. Rochel also had an assist for Sygulla. Hopkins managed to cut the margin to 38-29 with 2:37 left. LN scored three straight times to finish LN's scoring. On Hopkins' last possession Courtney Nelson hit a three.

Lakeville North used their pressure defense to suffocate Prior Lake 46-13 in the semis. LN was the #2 seed. The Panthers led 22-4 at half time.

Prior Lake had massive trouble just getting the ball past half court vs the LN pressure. For the game Prior Lake had 25 turnovers, or 49% of their possessoins ended in turnovers.

Prior Lake was missing players due to other basketball commitments.

A few years back there was a movie called Coyote Ugly. PCG might want to consider changing their names to the Coyotes. It wasn't pretty. It was gritty. PCG took advantage of the free throw line and rallied from six down in the second half in a grinder in the final contest of the day. This game was contested every step of the way and the PCG defense stepped up again.

In many ways it was the most compelling game of the night. The game pivoted on a drive by PCG's Sarah Nohrenberg with 2:10 left and LN holding a precarious 37-36 lead. She was fouled by Cassie Rochel, the 6-4 center for LN who picked up foul #5. Nohrenberg missed both tosses, but LN was now down to back up posts as starter Ashley Prather fouled out earlier. Kaiya Sygulla grabbed the rebound for LN and they worked the ball up court. Five times they had to pass the ball in on that possession as PCG got their hands on balls and deflected passes. Finally the pressure worked and Jackie Voigt stole an in bounds pass with 1:19. Ten seconds later PCG took their first lead of the second half since the 16:54 mark (PCG led at half 21-18) as Nohrenberg again drove, this time baseline, and was fouled for &1 chance. She missed the toss again. LN boarded, but a turnover gave the ball back to PCG with 29.4 ticks left. Samantha Hildebrandt was fouled and she made the front end. Sygulla again grabbed the second and ws fouled with 7.9 seconds left and the score 39-37. She missed the front end and Katya Leick snatched the rebound. She was immediately fouled and converted both for the final margin. A desperation 3 by Sygulla fell into the arms of Voigt and PCG will play Eastview on Friday. It will be a rematch of the overtime game won by Eastview in December.

It should be noted that Rachel Banham of Lakeville North did not play due to a school policy situation. It was not due to basketball or illness. From reports I received from multiple parties there are odd circumstances around the event. LN's team did rise to the challenge. With the exception of Rochel, most of the line up is gnat like and they did an excellent job of keeping bigger PCG off balance.

EASTVIEW lightning 59, LAKEVILLE NORTH panthers 54

Eastview went on a 14-0 run to take a 48-37 lead in the second half and then withstood a LN run to remain undefeated in the Lake Conference. This was also a critical 3AAAA game. Eastview looks like the #1 seed in the brutal section. They have beat both Park-Cottage Grove and LN at this stage of the season.

As the only Lake conference game on tap, it was must see action for a good chunck of the conference coaches. They saw a grinder with possessions milked for the best possible shot against intense, ferocious defense. Everything was contested. The only things that came cheap were steals that translated into layups which were few and far between.

LN started off with a 4-0 lead after two baskets by Cassie Rochel. Eastview didn't score until their 6th possession. In the early portion of the game Rachel Banham scored 7 straight for LN to make it 11-7 LN. After that LN went into a five possession drought. LN led 18-14 after a "&1" on a perimeter shot by Jamie Montgomery. After that LN finished the half 1/6. Eastview tied the game at 18 on a patented pull up jumper by McSparron, her first score on the night. The first lead came on a Sam Mehr basket from the right corner. On the next LN possession Rochel made two free throws to tie it back up at 20. That is how the half ended. Both teams were at 66.7 pp100 for the half.

After the break the scoring started heating up. Mehr opened things up with a 3 from the right corner. She added another trey two possessions later. Eastview was 4/5 to open the half and led 30-25 after a lay up by DaNae Moore. LN ran off five straight scoring possessions (8/9 for the start of the half). The LN tide would crest at 37-32 after a drive by Kaiya Sygulla, with a little more than 11 minutes to go. Then Eastview had their game changing 14-0 run initiated by a McSparron stop and pop. Up to that point the point guard had four points. McSparron had 9 of the 14 points. During that run Banham picked up four #4 and had to sit. That helped the Eastview momentum.

LN rallied with a 9-0 run in a little over 2 minutes to make the game competitive. Eastview led 48-46 at that point. Lightning struck on the next Lightning possession as Mehr knocked down a three from the left corner. Eastview pushed the margin back out to 55-46. Time was winding down, sometimes faster than anyone realized. The clock kept running late in the game after the whistle sounded. There was a debate about where the clock should be. Since I write down the time on stoppages the clock should have been set at 26.9, but the officials decided to split the difference in their Solomonic wisdom to 22.9 (the clock was stopped at 19 & change. That incident really didn't factor into the outcone however. Banham drained a three to finish the scoring at 59-54.

In a civil war battle of Lakeville it was the North over the South 54-40. North led at half time 25-15. South rallied to tie the game at 30 with 6:52 left. At that point North scored on every possession to close out the game--13 straight possessions--to win going away 54-40.

The only time South led in this game was after Gabriel Schroeder's three to open scoring. After that it was an 11-0 run by North. North scored on the next four possessions with Jess Braaten scoring the first four points for the Panthers. Meanwhile South was mired in a 10 possession drought, six of which were turnovers. In the middle of the drought North brought in a fresh five at the 12 minute mark. With the new shift, South was able to close the gap to 16-11. The first shift came back in force at 6:33 but South was on a roll to 18-14. Fouls however were starting to mount for North. Cassie Rochel and Rachel Banham spent extra time on the bench and missed some of their shift. The half ended when North took a time out with 3.1 ticks left. Banham entered the game and drained a 3 at the buzzer for a 25-15 North lead.

South scored the first three times they touched the ball to start the second half. North was trying to break Johnson's record for fastest team to foul and get the other team into the bonus. North had four fouls in the first 58 seconds of the second half. Thanks to the fouls crimping the North style and a sputtering offensive execution South pulled themselves back in the contest with a 12-3 run. North started the half with a 1/12 offensive sequence. Michaela Goris was the only Panther to find the bottom of the net at the start of the second half. South closed to one twice, but North held the younger school off. Jade Geif made one free throw with 6:52 left to tie the game at 30. Up to that point North was 2/19 in their offensive execution. Soon Rochel and others who were hampered with fouls returned. Then North's radar was back on. They scored on their last 13 trips down floor. At the start they only got a couple of points off of a free throw. Banham gave North breathing room with a 3 to make it 36-31. Goris mirrored that with a 3 on the next possession, and North had the came in control.

In a battle of new section rivals, and preseason top 10 teams it was Lakeville North besting Park-Cottage Grove 30-26. PCG scored more times in the game, but they were only able to squeeze one point off of those possessions, whereas LN hit two 3s to give them the margin of victory. It was a free throw parade and with running time, time spent at the line meant lower scoring games. Neither team was at full strength with Tina Fisher and Katya Leick absent from the PCG lineup, while point guard Kaiya Sygulla did not play for LN.

PCG opened scoring on their first possession with a basket by Jamie Lurken, Two LN possessions later Cassie Rochel scored and was fouled. She didn't convert the free chance, but it started a 12-0 run for the Panthers. Ashley Prather had five points in the run up. Meanwhile LN held PCG scoreless for 10 possessions, five of which ended up as turnovers. The rest of the first half LN maintained their margin. PCG went to the line six times in the first half with a chance for 11 points. PCG came away with three. Future Gopher Jackie Voigt was 3/8 at the line in the first half. It was LN up at half 19-11.

PCG opened the second half on a 7-0 run to cut the margin to 19-18. Voigt again spent time at the line with three free throws in the stretch. LN had a seven possession drought to start the second frame, two of which were turnovers. Mikayla Goris broke the drought on a pass from Rochel. Voigt again cut the margin to one with a pair of freebies. LN pushed their lead to five a couple of times, but PCG kept battling back. PCG scored four straight times and 5/6 to cut the margin again to the tantalizing margin of one 27-26. PCG never could push that boulder over the hill however. Rochel hit one free throw for 28-26 LN lead. PCG had two straight turnovers in an effort to tie. LN milked the clock and Prather iced the victory with two free throws.

Was it the Fall League or the Foul League I was watching? In the end it was free throws that doomed PCG's chances. They went to the line a staggering 12 times and were 12/23 on the game. They left 8 points on the table in the first half. LN also did not get all the points they could at the line, but there was one difference---when LN missed free throws it was on the &1 twice. LN always got a point from their opportunities.
