STARS SHOWCASE
STORM 87, LIBERTY 77

In my final contest I charted it was the Storm running off a 15-0 lead in the first seven possessions as they rang the Liberty's bell 87-77. That slow start kept the Liberty playing catch up the entire contest. At the largest point in the first half the Storm led by 18. At half time the Storm led 44-26.

The Storm stretched that lead to 22 in the second half (67-45) before the Liberty started their rally. The Libs had a 12-2 run to cut the margin to 69-57. The Storm had on last surge out to 80-61. The Liberty closed hard with a 16-7 run, but that early hole did them no favors.

Megan Stuart had 24 points to lead the way for the Storm. The Storm had another five players between 8-14 points. The Liberty's Bridget Schuneman was right behind Stuart with 22 points. Schuneman had 18 of her points in the second half. Two other Liberties reached double figures.

FEVER 78, MAGIC 52

The Fever cast a spell over the Magic with a surprisingly easy 78-52 victory.

Right from the get go the Fever connected as they led 15-2 . Leading the early charge was Brianna Edwards with six points. The Magic did put together a seven possession run to narrow the gap to 19-17, but the Magic left them just as quickly. A 1/14 sequence right after that narrowing is a case in point. It was 44-28 Fever at half.

The Fever continued to play with authority in the second half. Some of their players had been together in the AAU season, which was a great help with familiarity. Most of these events players need name tags. That wasn't the case for Alyssa Marschner and Rachel Moen. The Fever took a 20 point lead at 58-38 and they maintained that margin the rest of the way.

Three players for the Fever almost out scored the entire Magic team (48-52). Brianna Edwards led the way with 18 points including three old fashioned three point plays; Alyssa Marschner added 16 points including two 3s and Rachael Moen contributed 14 points plus had a strong floor game. Marschner and Moen (M&M) looked like they had total command of the game. They didn't look hurried and were spot on with decisions. Moen had 8 assists for this game.

Today I watched three contests in the Stars Showcase. I planted myself down on court one (the one nearest natural light for better photos). Here were the ground rules: Games were divided into two 30 minute running time halves. Shooting fouls were one point, plus a free throw. Players were used in equal installments. Most teams were rostered at 10, but some players were missing for various reasons.

This game got off to an extremely slow start. Both teams had 13 empty possessions between them before The Mystics finally found some magic with a basket by Rachelle Blaschko. The Mystics had the advantage early with a 12-3 lead. After that the Sky started having their shots fall with a 26-13 finish to the half. The Sky led 29-25 at the break.

The start of the second half was a flip of the first half with the Sky going on a 15-7 run to lead 44-32. The Mystics did close the gap to 48-41, but a 11-0 Sky surge put the game out of reach at 59-41. Or so it would seem. The Mystics did have one last run of their own as they scored on nine straight possessions to cut the margin to 63-58 at one point. Ellen Edison iced the contest with the last four points for the Sky, all involving free throws.

Ellen Edison led the Sky with 19 points.

The Minnesota Stars will hold their 7th annual Adidas Stars Shoot Out on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Hopkins. Each player is guaranteed at least three games. The games will start at 10:30 am and the last game starts at 7:30 pm. You can register on line at their site.

TAR HEELS 61, MAVERICKS 59

This was the best game for dramatics and rallies. The Tar Heels had the advantage early with a 23-13 lead. Brittany Thiesfeld had six points in the initial run up. The Mavericks started cranking up their offense in the later part of the half with 20 points their last 13 possessions--a pp100 of 153.8 pp100. DaNae Moore went to town with 12 points in the flurry of activity. With Moore's jolt the margin was narrowed to 34-33 at half.

The Tar Heels started the second half with the advantage. They led 41-36 at the widest after a Lindsey Anderson foul point (fouled, but no free throw made). Then the Mavericks kicked in with a 16-5 run on an 8/9 offensive sequence. The Mavericks used balance in this run up with six different players contributing. The Mavs pushed the lead out to 57-50 when the Tar Heels finished with a flourish. On their last 9 possessions the Heels outscored the Mavs 13-5 to pull out a 61-59 win. Thiesfeld started the rally off with a basket off a dish by Dorsey. The Heels defense stepped it up with Shannon Thompson getting three stops including two huge steals. The Mavericks had five turnovers in their last eight possessions. Dorsey put the Heels ahead with her trey. It was a roller coaster ride, but in the end the Heels prevailed 61-59.

MINNESOTA STARS SHOWCASE

BADGERS 44, CYCLONES 38

The Badgers had a strong dose of Minneapolis Lady Cats as the edged the Cyclones 44-38. Of the 11 players on the roster 9 played some for MLC this summer. Seven played in this contest. The rosters tend to whittle down as the day progresses. This was a 2:50 game and each team was missing some players due to other conflicts. It should be noted the Badgers had five players from the 2011 class or younger, the Cyclones two. It should also be noted that neither team was a veteran squad. The Badgers had four players with varsity experience on the roster, of which three played. The Cyclones had seven, of which only four played.

For those familiar with the MLC style of play it is aggressive defensively. That is the style the Badgers used. The refs whistles were busy in this contest with the Cyclones getting 18 points on fouls. They only made 8 free throws since a team was credited with a point on every shooting foul. The Badgers only had two points this method. That meant the Cyclones only scored 10 field goals, half as much as the Badgers.

This was also the lowest scoring contest of any the events. Part of that has to be due to the inexperience of playing together, some of it is due to fatigue (this was both third game). As it was the Badgers had an early 10-5 lead as the Cyclones were mired in an 8 possession drought. However they bounced back with a 12-6 run to go up one 17-16. Rachel Stenhaug had four points off transition layups after missed Badger shots. Ashle Roedel had five points in the stretch, all on fouls/free throws. Carissa Wolyniec hit a three and then Aubrey Davis answered for the Badgers. The game was tied at half 23 all.

The Cyclones led 31-25 early in the second half. After that the Cyclones became the Breeze on offense as they only scored on 5 of their last 18 possessions (a floor % of .278). Meanwhile the Badgers had a 5/6 offensive sequence on an 11-6 run to go up 36-35. Kaitlin Gerber had 7 points in the offensive jolt. The Badgers last 8 points came at the hands of Brianna Williams and Tacita Gonzalez, each with four points.

SPARTANS 74, BLUE DEVILS 52

In the battle of the giants, the contest went to Cassie Rochel's Spartans over Amber Dvorak's Blue Devils. But the players beyond the arc determined the winner of this event. The Spartans knocked down nine 3s in the game to one for the Blue Devils, a 24 point advantage.

It was Dvorak scoring on the first possession, but that was the only lead the Blue Devils would have the whole game. The Spartans soon thereafter scored on five straight possessions to go up 10-3 and the game wasn't seriously in doubt after that point. Cassie Rochel had six of the first 10 points. The lead soon was ten. The Blue Devils whittled away at the margin, getting as close as 31-29 late in the half. Already the 3 ball was working its wonders for the Spartans. They drained five in the opening stanza. It was 33-30 in a less frenetic game than the first.

The Spartans broke free from a 38-36 game with defense. They held the Blue Devils to 1/15 possessions and limited them to only one shot on may occasions. If you tack on the other results it was a 3/22 stretch or a 27.3 pp100 stretch. Far below the gold standard of 100 pp100. Rochel was snatching many of her defensive boards in the futile effort to comeback. Also it was in the second half Kelsie Ammann left the game with an knee injury. That left the Spartans with an iron five. They took care of the ball despite the defensive efforts to harass the guards. In the end it was the Spartans prevailing 74-52.

MN STARS SHOWCASE GAME 1
GOPHERS 72, WILDCATS 65

The games at the Stars were longer (at least in this one) by five minutes. And the pace was full court breaks. There was no shot clock, but it might have been 12 seconds tops.

What was interesting in this game, was the ebb & flow when certain players were on the floor. When ever Theairra Taylor was on the floor the Gophers jumped out to an 8 point lead, when her time came to go to the bench, the Wildcats would come back and make it a contest. TT back in, instant run. TT sitting stagnation on offense.

The Gophers led early 18-9. Leah Dietel provided the Wildcats with their first seven points. TT had nine of the 18. When Taylor sat the Wildcats closed to 24-23. Taylor in again, the score ballooned to 36-23. Taylor sat down again and it was tight 36-33. The Gophers led at half time 38-33.

At the start of the second half Taylor was on the bench. That was good news to the Wildcats who took the lead 43-40. Taylor again came to the rescue and it was back to a 55-45 advantage for the Gophers. Another break and the Wildcats closed to 59-56. T Squared back in and the lead swelled to 70-57. The final, eventually was 72-64.
