AA CHAMPIONSHIP
ALBANY huskies 62, JORDAN jaguars 52
Albany took the title game this year and their was no dispute about it. Albany held on after a late Jordan surge for a 62-52 win. The Jaguars were spent emotionally and physically from their upset of Crookston.
There will be no more "what ifs" from the StarTribune. Here is the game reports from the St. Cloud Times. The Noreen family is spotlighted in the SCT.
In the third place game it was Crookston over Hayfield 75-68. Also from the Grand Forks Herald.

This had drama as well as a veteran Albany survived a pesky youthful Hayfield team 52-50. Fouls were an issue for Hayfield.

First off a warning. I am only going to put up the brief summary tonight and back fill later tomorrow. The candle is about to meet in the middle. I have not had a great day.
Also the roads were slow going up. I didn't arrive at St. John's until the 12:00 mark of the first half. For those around the country the Twin Cities got socked with snow and what usually takes 20 minutes took 35. Anyhow...
When I arrived Sam Larsen was sitting and Taylor Voss soon joined her. That may have indicated Albany was having a rough time. Not really. The score was 12-2 and that lead kept building throughout the night. Jennie Noreen and Hannah Hylla provided most of the offense I saw in the first half. Albany was quick to the ball, got their hands on a lot of passes, and aggressively attacked the basket on offense. It was 40-14 at half.Just a week ago I saw BBE. The result was different and that was due to Albany. Most of Albany's starters were down with 8 minutes left. The score at that point was 65-27. The one thing I think that was interesting was Heidi Lensing of BBE had four &1 opportunities in the second half. It looked like she could have had five but the officials waved it off. Most of these happened in the second half when the Albany bench was in. When I was tabulating Lensing ended up with 21 points. Jennie Noreen for Albany had 20 at half and 24 for the game.

Last Monday defense ruled. Tonight, if you enjoy high octane offensive fireworks, Eden Valley was the place to be for a heavyweight AA battle. 168 points were scored as #2 Albany finished the contest with a 17-2 run over the last 2:43 to beat host #3 Eden Valley-Watkins. With the pace of the game, and fouls, EVW eventually ran out of gas. They finished the night with a 9 possession drought.
This game also featured good half/bad half. Hannah Linz of EVW had 30 points for the game, 25 in the first half. Jennie Noreen of Albany had 27, 21 in the second half. Sam Larsen had 24, 18 in the first half. So EVW didn't have the corresponding match in the second like Albany. Fouls also played a huge part with EVW's Amber Junker taking a seat with 6:18 left. Joining her at 4:08 was Larsen. But the game really pivoted on the 5th foul by EVW's Ellen Becker with 2:43 left. The game was tied at 76 after her foul. After she left EVW only scored two more points. Albany finished the game with a 10/11 scoring run.
As you can imagine with such a high scoring contest both teams came out of the gates flaming. There was no need for a shot clock as Noreen launched with less than six seconds gone. In the first 16 possessions both teams scored 11 times. That is a floor % of .688. The game was tied at 12 at that point. Albany was the first to run into a dry patch with a 1/10 sequence, six of the nine non scoring possessions were via turnovers. EVW had a 13-2 run (they trailed 12-8) with Linz delivering 7 of her 25 first half points. Albany quickly tied it up at 21, while EVW leap frogged them to lead 32-24 in a blink. By this time I was on my second pen there was so much ink being used. Last week the games were more sedate. Both teams tonight were flying, testing every opportunity for transition. EVW had foul issues however. Junker picked up #3 with 6:35 left and was forced to sit. Albany closed to 32-30. EVW pushed the lead out to four. With 2:57 left in the half Noreen finally got into the scoring column with a pair of free throws. She then tied it up at 40 on a drive. Linz scored the next five for EVW off a drive and then a post up &1. The half ended 47-42 with EVW up. Last Saturday Duluth East had 47 for their total points against Osseo.
EVW had their second 8 point lead after a Kelley Theis 3 on their opening possession o
f the second half. A 10-3 Albany run cut the margin to 53-52. A key pivot point came at the 14:01 mark when Junker was fouled. She made her first free throw and then picked up foul #4 going over the back as Noreen got the rebound on the missed second shot. That took away a big part of the EVW offense with inside presence. EVW led 54-52 when Junker sat down. After the score was tied at 58, Albany took advantage of the foul situation with 8-2 run. EVW took a time out at 66-60. EVW bounced back and tied the game at 66. However Junker picked up #5 with 6:18 as Noreen picked up an offensive board. There were four more lead changes with EVW going back up 70-69 after a put back by Kelsey Stenger. Then Linz, who was silent up to this point in the second half, nailed a three with 5:20 left. This put EVW up 73-69. Larsen soon joined Junker on the bench as EVW had a 74-71 lead as Stenger made one free throw. That set up the final 3 minutes in which Albany pulled away.

Lourdes provided the hope for the entire Rochester community as they are the only local team to move on to the semifinal round as they knocked off #2 Albany. Albany led 31-29 when Lourdes scored on six straight possessions to reclaim the lead 43-34.

Kelsey Jacobson, a Florida Gulf Coast verbal, had 15 points, all on 3s including the shot from the right corner for the win in a Moorhead/West Central win over Albany. MWC trailed by as many as 14 in the the second half before mounting their stunning comeback. Much of this story
could have been written by Dickens---it was the best of halves, it was the worst of halves. For Albany their "best of halves" came in the first. The Huskies broke free from a six all tie with nine unanswered points on a 5/6 scoring sequence. Jennie Noreen and Hannah Hylla each had four points in the outburst. All this occurred as MWC was stuck in neutral for eight straight possessions. Albany wasn't finished with their hot hand yet. They had another 6/7 scoring sequence on a 9-3 run to make it 25-11. So for 15 possessions Albany was firing at 126.7 pp100 clip. The problem for Albany was that they were leaving four points at the line. Moorhead also left one more at the line with five missed opportunities. The last score, not the last possession, came by Jacobson's hand from the top of the key. It was her first points of the day. Jennie Noreen had 9 points at half for Albany.
Noreen hit a three to start the half to make it 28-14 Albany. Jacobson answered right back with another of her favorite shots. MWC then went into an offensive hibernation for the next five possessions. Albany also was in an offensive rut going 1/6. Moorhead started their comeback with a 3/4 sequence near the 14 minute mark. Cassie Hooten turned it up a notch on defense and that seemed to get MWC off in the right direction. Hooten had five defensive stops in the first 10 Albany possessions. MWC had a 8-1 run to cut the margin to 31-25. On the next Albany possession the Huskies scored three points. One on a Taylor Voss free throw, and then a rebound basket by Brittany Schieber. Until that time Albany was 2/12 or 25 pp100 and a floor % of .167. That is c-c-c-cold. Five of those possessions were turnovers. Still with 8 minutes to go Albany led 36-25. Another, more frigid offensive sequence coupled with a resurgent MWC offense made the game more interesting. Albany went 7 straight trips without scoring. 
This time the Huskies left 8 points at the line. MWC went on an 13-0 tear capped by a Cassie Hooten driving lay up for a 38-36 MWC lead. Taylor Voss had one free throw, and then Noreen added another one possession later for the tie. A travel call with under a minute gave the ball back to Albany. They worked it down and the Huskies found a wide open Schieber under the basket. The shot didn't drop and Kelsey Jacobson got the rebound. A time out with 10 seconds left set up the dramatics. Jacobson was fouled and the ball was out of bounds with 3.1 left. Jacobson rubbed off screens for a clean look in the right corner.It should be noted that Sam Larsen was not available for Albany.

ALBANY'S SWEET 16 EXPERIENCE
Yesterday I had the Albany Australian championship performance up. Today it is their Sweet 16 results. Unfortunately there are too many games and not enough time to see everybody at the Sweet 16. This helps fill in the gaps.
Again Coach Noreen from Albany is the narrator.
"We ended up going 2 and 2. The teams we lost to were quality 4A teams and I was very proud of my girls performance in the tournament especially after a 5 1/2 hour flight from Hawaii to LAX and then a 4 hour layover and a 3 1/2 flight to MSP airport and then battling the rush hour traffic home. Special thanks to Jeff McCarron for giving us a first round game at 11:00 a.m. The Sweet Sixteen Tournament is a first class event. Many great games and several players from outstate playing that a person never gets to see, only read about on your blog or MBBN.
"Albany's first game was against Bigfork. Half time score was Albany 34 and Bigfork 12. The final score was Albany 61 Bigfork 29.

"In our second game we got the wake up call. We played Centennial. The two teams were quite familiar with each other. This was the third time in a month we played each other. Last meeting was at a Breakdown Tournament were we lost by 5 points on July 21. In that game Taylor Voss lead all scorers with 32 points connecting on seven 3 pointers. In our game at the Sweet Sixteen unbeknown to me, Taylor Voss was sick and had lost her lunch. Score at halftime was 30-30. Centennial showed their depth and poured it on the second half. Albany showed the effects of a long plane ride and ended up loosing 80-57. Centennial had 10 players score with 4 players in double figures. Their depth and tenacious person to person defense proved too much!

"Albany's next game was against Eastview, a game Albany let slip away. Score at halftime was Albany 33 and Eastview 40. At one point in the second half with 8:24 remaining Eastview led 58 to 44. Albany got back into the game and with 1:40 left Albany had closed the score to 69-62. With a steal by Sam Larsen and a quick pass to Jennie Noreen the Huskies brought it back to trailing by 2 points with :29 left in the game, but were unable to make up any more points. Final score ended with Eastview 74 and Albany 72. One of the referees complimented the Albany girls by saying, 'Any other team playing and we would have been done a half an hour ago.' Eastview's Brittnye McSparron, who has verballed Drake, had 30 points.

"Albany's last game of the day was against Eden Prairie. At halftime the score was Albany 33 and Eden Prairie 26. Second half Sam Larsen shined scoring 32 points in the game. At one point in the second half Albany led by 18 points until Jennie Noreen took a elbow to the nose and had to be taken out. (Needless to say Jennie has had to make another appointment for her senior pictures. Dad thinks her swollen nose and back eye make her look tough, but I struck out!) With the point guard out Taylor Voss took over duties and with Taylor not feeling 100% Eden Prairie pressed and forced enough turnovers to get within 5 points with 2 minutes remaining in the game. Jennie Noreen then returned and Albany was able to maintain their lead and went on to win the game 62 to 57 taking 7th place honors in the Sweet Sixteen Tournament. Eden Prairie's Michelle Tobin had 20 points.

"For basketball junkies there was no better place to be than at the College of St. Benedict. Fans were able to see some of the best high school teams and players in the state of Minnesota compete. One game, New Life Academy playing Winona Cotter went 4 overtimes with New Life finally winning. Congratulations to Centennial for winning the tournament. They defeated St. Paul Central 79 to 55.
