ANOKA-RAMSEY CC rams 92
FOND DU LAC T&C thunder 24

Anoka-Ramsey spoiled the debut of Fond du Lac 92-24. Kate Bement scored two 3s on the opening two AR possessions and it was all down hill from there for FdL. In fact Bement outscored FdL on her own with 28 points. The Rams used pressure defense against the iron five Thunder. 26 points came off transition points. FdL had 43 turnovers in their first outing.

There are inevitable growing pains as a first time program playing their first game. FdL had seven players dressed, yet only five played. Ashley Langila hit her head on the floor and was checked out by first aid, but she remained in the contest. With the "iron five" FdL was forced to play zone. That opened the door for free looks from behind the arc for AR. Bement had four of the 8 AR 3s on the night. FdL was pressured right from the start and the back court had issues against the AR heat. FdL never really got into any half court offense in the first half. Droughts ruled the day for FdL. The Thunder had dry stretches of 11, 8, 10 and another 8. It was AR 54-12 at half time.

The second half there really was no big changes. The suspense was "would AR reach the century mark?" AR needed 10 points with a little over three minutes left. They only scored two more the rest of the way. Most of the second half the Rams worked on moving the ball vs the half court zone. As far as the biggest string---AR scored five straight times in the first half

MCCC CHAMPIONSHIP
ROCHESTER yellowjackets 63, ANOKA-RAMSEY rams 49

In a rare (for winter) Sunday out & about, Rochester won their first MCCC Championship with a 63-49 win over AR. AR had finally had some of their players healed from nagging injuries. The Yellowjackets had a strong start, but fell into a severe drought. They battled through that dry spell to lead at half time 27-23. When two Rams fouled out it looked like clear sailing with a 46-29 lead. However AR refused to go quietly. They closed to six points with a minute to go, yet Rochester hung on with five straight scores to finish the game.

Rochester took control with two consecutive Anne Breland threes. The Yellowjackets led 12-3 with Breland providing 8. Then it was a 14 possession wandering in the wilderness. And play turned sloppy with eight possessions ending as turnovers. AR took advantage of the down time to go on a 14-0 run. Both Sonja Ellingson and Amanda Reh had five points in the run. Then it was AR's turn to go into the deep freeze. They had 10 empty trips as Rochester fought to tie it up at 21. Breland broke the tie with a pair of free throws and then hit a shot from the corner. The Yellowjackets led at half 27-23.

AR scored on their first possession, but then it was nothing but bad news until the 8 minute mark. They had another 10 possession drought and a 1/17 sequence. On top of that floor general Amanda Reh picked up foul #4 on an over the back call with 14:44 left. She didn't come out and was soon tagged with #5 on a charge with 12:05 left. At that point Rochester was feeling their oat and up 37-27. More bad news came at the 8:50 mark as Jessica Cichy picked up #4 and #5 within seconds of each other. With two aggressive offensive players out it appeared Rochester could coast. They couldn't. Ellingson started a run with a three. That started a string of four straight scores (not possessions) of 3s for AR. Love Washington stepped up and delivered three of them. She had an opportunity for another three point play the old fashioned way. That free throw rimmed out. The very next AR possession Megan Hambleton drained a 3 and the seemingly comfortable 46-29 for Rochester had evaporated to a very much in doubt 53-46 game with 4 minutes left. AR hung around at that level until, with Carri Roline was called for a charge with under a minute to go. Roline made the basket which of course was waved off. AR wouldn't score again and Rochester won their first title in four tries.

RIVERLAND blue devils 53, ANOKA-RAMSEY rams 49

If it is Wednesday, it must mean a Community College game. It was off to Coon Rapids tonight for a Southern Division game. Riverland rallied from a 47-38 deficit with a 15-2 run to beat a depleted host Anoka-Ramsey 53-49. Sonja Ellingson and Love Washington were not in uniform for AR tonight.

There were more droughts than scoring sequences in this game. At the start it seemed that the scoring would be coming in buckets. It was 7-6 Riverland after 10 possessions. That was a pp100 combined of 130.0. That offensive fire power was not to last however. Riverland went into a six possession drought. AR soon followed suit with their own sixer. AR had other droughts of 8 and 5, Riverland added another sixer. Neither team could establish any rhthym. Riverland led 15-11, but AR went on an 8-2 run to take a 19-17 lead. Riverland finished the half with a 10-4 run to lead at half time 27-23. At about the 3 minute mark AR's point guard Amanda Reh went out of the game with an ankle injury. That made AR's bench even thinner.

Reh soldiered on with her left ankle bandaged up to start the second half. Just like the first half the beginning of the second half gave the illusion of offensive fireworks. It turned out to fizzle with a whimper. It was 12 points combined in the first 10 possessions. AR regained the lead at 31-29. A key moment came at the 18:06 mark of the half when Riverland post Brooke Monson picked up foul #3. She tacked on a technical foul for complaining and went to the pine. Riverland led 29-23 at that point. Reh cashed in four free throws and on the next AR possession Kelley Olson scored on a put back to tie it at 29. Riverland had a 32-30 lead when their offense took a wrong turn. Riverland found 11 dead ends before getting back on the point highway. In the intermission, AR went on a 9-0 run. They too struggled to find the bottom of the basket with a five possession drought. AR led 39-32. Monson retuned at the 12:46 mark to try to stop the bleeding. She did provide two baskets to cut the lead to 39-36. Shortly thereafter in the space of 40 seconds AR scored three quick baskets, two off their press by Reh to push the lead out to 45-36. Becca Swalla stopped that run for Riverland to make the score 45-38. Two free throws by Carri Roline put the score at 47-38. Then AR went into offensive slumber mode. They finished the game with a 1/14 sequence including 11 straight. This was with 7:30 left in the contest. At 4:04 left Reh fouled out on an over the back call. Riverland tied the game with under 1:10 left with a bucket by Swalla. That started a 6 point run by Swalla. The final basket was an &1 at 20.5 left 51-49. AR had a chance to tie with 12.2 left but Megan Hambleton missed both free throws. Brooke Monson was fouled and provided the final two points for Riverland.

ANOKA-RAMSEY golden rams 67,
NORTH IOWA AREA trojans 32

North Iowa Area got lost on the way to Anoka-Ramsey due to the 35W bridge being down. They could have also used a map to find the basket in the first half as the defending NJCAA D3 champs Anoka-Ramsey raced to a 32-9 lead on the way to a 67-32 drubbing of their wayward guests. AR hit for 11 threes in the contest.

Anoka-Ramsey may have been stale at the start of the game waiting for their opponents. The nets weren't burning at either end as it was only a 7-5 advantage for AR with 11 minutes to go in the half. Droughts were the order of the day with NIA suffering through 5, 7, and then the mother of all droughts 21 straight possessions in the first half. They were stuck on five for over 10 minutes. AR didn't start heating up until later in the half. AR did go on an 18-0 run during NIA's walk in the wilderness. At halftime AR led 32-9 with #32 Amanda Reh leading the way with 9 points.

It was more of the same in the second half. The AR individual pressure defense harrassed the NIA guards all night. The game margin did get to be 40 points at one point 60-20 with about 7 minutes to go. At that point AR made good use of their bench. The rest of the way NIA outscored AR 12-7.
