FARMINGTON INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS
Farmington, MN girls basketball coach Jason Berg has about 19 short instructional basketball videos on YouTube. This video is #2 in the series on 1 hand set shot. You see players go through the drills. The videos range from shooting, and ball handling to fast breaks and screens and cuts. Kevin Hunt Video produced the shorts.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR PLUS

IOWA STATE TOUNAMENT
3A CHAMPIONSHIP
CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER 52, SPIRIT LAKE 43

Cedar Rapids Xavier, a team that plays in the 4A Mississippi Valley conference, won the 3A tournament over Spirit Lake. The video I received was choppy--like still action, but there was audio along with it this time.

CRX opened scoring with a lay up by Kristin Maher. Spirit Lake had a 5/6 offensive sequence in the middle portion of the quarter, but CRX was matching their offensive efforts. CRX finished off the quarter on a better note with three straight scores, two possessions coming at the line. That trend and the lay up trend would favor CRX throughout the night. CRX led 13-12 at the stop.

Both teams cooled off in the second quarter. SL did grab a 14-13 lead on a steal and lay up by Kaisha Brown. CRX held the lead after a pair of free throws by Baily Dorrington. SL regained the lead momentarily with a lay up by Chrissy Stettnichs. CRX again closed off the quarter with 3/4 scoring possessions compared to 1/4 for SL. At the break CRX led 22-20.

CRX came out in the 3rd quarter with six straight turnovers. That translated into a 26-22 lead by SL. A TV timeout got CRX's composure back. They scored on their next two possessions while SL turned it over twice. SL pushed the lead back to four on a Kaisha Brown 3 29-25. Another TV timeout again got CRX a break they needed. After the time out Colleen Bouchard, off the bench drained a three to cut the margin to 29-28. That started a four possession run with another Bouchard 3 thrown in the mix. It was a 10-0 run that changed the course of the game.

CRX continued their hot streak in the fourth with two more scores. So the entire run was 15-0. It was 6/8 scoring possessions with Bouchard's two 3s, and another old fashioned 3 point play by Bailey Dorrington. After the five minute mark CRX scored 8 points at the line, and only scored one lay up. SL had the 8 possession drought that damaged their chances. Once they scored again they were trailiing 40-29. Kirschbaum started an 11-6 rally. SL did cut it to 46-40, but CRX executed well down the stretch.

I am doing this as a look at the classes across state. Last year in the MN AAA final Benilde-St. Margaret's beat Marshall. BSM had a 87.1 pp100 and .419 floor %. Marshall checked in with 62.9 and .323. So the Iowa 3A final was a slightly more competitive game, but there were a lot of similarities. Only 19% of the AAA teams I have seen this year have topped CRX's pp100, only 9% of the teams have had better floor %.

IOWA STATE TOURNAMENT
2A SEMIFINALS
BATTLE CREEK-IDA GROVE 48, AGWSR 43

BCIG survived a scare from AGWSR. Kelsey Bolte fouled out and that opened the door for AGWSR. AGWSR rallied from a 15 point deficit to close to 42-40, but Shelby Schmidt iced the game with six straight free throws.

Bolte scored the first six points for BCIG, but two trends were developing that did not auger well for them. 1. Bolte had a turnover on her first possession and 2. She also started collecting fouls. Both teams were hot to begin with (BCIG 5/9 on their possessions, AGWSR 4/8), but then the tide turned. BCIG finished the first quarter 0/5 while AGWSR was 1/6. It was tied at 11 at the end of the quarter.

It was raining 3s in the second quarter for BCIG. They connected on 3 with Dani Miller providing two. But it was Gabi Miller's lay up that gave them the lead for good at 16-15. AGWSR had a 8 possession drought in the middle of the quarter as BCIG went on a 7-0 run. At the half it was BCIG 26-20.

BCIG kept increasing their lead up to 39-24 late in the 3rd quarter after a lay up by Katie Hummelgard. AGSWR managed to cut that at the buzzer on reserve Macy Ubbens basket 39-26.

BCIG opened the fourth quarter with five straight turnovers. AGWSR took advantage of BCIG's gifts for six points and 4/6 possessions to make it 40-34. Then Bolte picked up a charge, which was #5 and had to sit and hoped her team could get the job done. They did, but it was touch and go. A lay up by Jessica McDowell cut the lead to 42-40 with 1:26 left, but Shelby Schmidt was there to mop up. She made 6 free throws to close the game and had a key defensive board. More importantly the BCIG defense held for four straight possessions. BCIG won 48-43 and it sets up a rematch of last year's tournament final with North Butler.

4A QUARTERFINALS
DES MOINES ROOSEVELT 61, IOWA CITY 26

DMR took a convincing step in their quest for back to back titles today.
This game was over after the first quarter as DMR racked up 21 points, 10 from the hand of Charmaine Bell, 5 from her two assists. After one quarter their pp100 was 161.5 and floor % was .692. The second quarter was more of the same with scoring 2 points and assisting for 10 more. So for the 38 points at half for DMR Bell was involved with 27. DMR did cool down a bit in the second quarter with a pp100 of 130.8, but their floor % was still .692.
The clinic continued into the 3rd quarter with DMR cooling off still to 100.0 pp100 and the floor % of .571. These numbers are still impressive. But IC was struggling. They had a 10 possession drought this quarter. The last 3 minutes DMR subbed out the main crew and their last five possessions all ended in turnovers. But still IC struggled enduring another 8 possession drought.

IOWA STATE TOURNAMENT
3A QUARTERFINALS
SPIRIT LAKE indians 49, SIOUX CITY HEELAN 38

The city of Sioux City is still waiting for one of its schools to win a game in the girls state tournament. As a group they are 0-history. That trend continued today with Spirit Lake dousing Heelan's hopes 49-38.

SCH started off strong and led for much of the first quarter. Their biggest lead came at 11-5 on a jumper by Millie Niggeling. But Spirit Lake answered with three consecutive scoring possessions to tie it at 11.

That hot hand continued into the second quarter with SL scoring on 5/6 possessions to grab a 9 point lead 22-13. Kaisha Brown had six in the outburst and Amber Kirschbaum added 5 points in their 11-2 run. The lead got out to 13 at 28-15 with a pair of Jordi Gerking free throws. SCH did manage to shave a bit of the lead off at hald 28-17.

SCH did have a stretch in the 3rd quarter where they closed the margin to six 33-27. In fact that is how the quarter ended with a 4/5 offensive run by SCH.

SCH continued their climb back and narrowed the margin to 36-34. But their defense held as their offense struggled. They held SCH to a six possession drought. A four point play on the 6th possession of the quarter gave SL some security. The possession started with a Kirsschbaum lay up, and she was fouled. She missed the chance for three, but Jordi Gerking was their for th rebound. She was fouled and delivered two more at the line for a 40-34 SL lead. SCH tested the lead getting as close as five but Gerking nailed a trey to end all comeback hopes. After that all points were made at the line for SL.

1A QUARTERFINALS
GRAETTINGER-TERRIL 49, BEDFORD 37

Iowa has the games up on the internet. The games are live feeds and are free.

Graettinger-Terril came out and scored on their first three possessions and held Bedford scoreless on their first eight in establishing the tone of the game. GT was up 8-0 before Bedford found the bottom of the net at the 3:07 mark in the first quater. GT led after one 11-4

GT pushed their lead to 12 with two more scores on their first two possessions. GT then went into a six possession drought. During that time Bedford was able to slice the margin down to six. after 3 of 4 scoring possessions. But Bedford went cold again with an 8 possession drought. The score was 22-14 at half.

Again GT was hot to start the half with 5/6 scoring possessions and the lead was back to 12 31-19. But GT wasn't able to score the last 7 possessions of the quarter. Bedford did score enough to cut the margin down to 31-25 at the break.

Bedford opened the 4th with a three point play by Erin Johnson and the GT lead was down to 3, but just as in the other quarters GT came out smoking. GT scored on their first 5 possessions of the fourth quarter and built the lead back to 8 41-33. GT finished with free throws in the last 3/4 possessions. For the quarter GT's floor % was .750. GT won 49-37 and will play WCLT on Wednesday night.

If you notice the possessions are not close. That is because with four quarters a team may pile up one more possession each quarter.
It will be interesting to compare/contrast the classes across state. I will be giving some player analysis when I have the time to carefully watch the video. I have been juggling many errands around these games.

I ran across these videos out on the internet. Some have great interest to the readers, or should I saw viewers, of this site. Here are some listings of games, and they go all the way back to December.

MINNESOTA
St. Paul Central vs Cretin-Derham Hall. This game was won by Central . Central is the #1 team in AAAA. CDH is in the same section as Central. Both teams feature top level guards. SPC has Angel Robinson going to Marquette and CDH has Alyssa Karel off to Wisconsin. The first half is here. the second half is here. From YouTube 40 some minutes for each half. This is a professionally done production.

Austin vs New Prague. This game was back on Dec 2. Austin is in white, New Prague in Black. Again from You Tube. about a minute. This is a single camera taping the game and edited.

Sports Jam on NW cable 12 has highlights of Champlin Park/Blaine and Hopkins/Armstrong . You will have to forward past the gymnastics and hockey.

WISCONSIN
Union Grove won their conference. This is from the Racine Journal Times and You Tube. About 5 minutes. This is a professionally done video.

Holmen vs Tomah. This is in three parts. It is a single camera taping from a fixed spot.

WEAU 13 has highlights from Tuesday nights first round of the playoffs. Games include Eau Claire Memorial, Chippewa Falls/Superior; Durand/Ellsworth; and Altoona/Bloomer.
