POINT GUARDS

Lindsay Whalen does a Q&A with KSAT in San Antonio. One question deals with Olympic chances.

PINNACLE BANK
The Pinnacle Bank girls basketball team out of Nebraska has a feature in the Omaha World Herald. McKayla Knudson of South Sioux City has most of the ink. PB was 5-0 in a tournament earlier this month in Kansas. They will be in the Dakota Showcase starting Thursday.

COACHING NEWS
Lindsay Woolley has been hired as the new women's basketball coach at Miles Community College in Montana. He was an assistant there. From the Billings Gazette.

WHALEN
Here are a couple items on former Gopher (and the pride of Hutchinson) Lindsey Whalen. First off is the WNBA play of the day with a "slick" pass.

The Wages of Wins article the Best Player in the game compares Whalen to Becky Hammon among others comparisons.

MC CARVILLE
Former Gopher Janel McCarville, now with the New York Liberty was named player of the week in the Eastern conference.

SIGNINGS
Kent State has signed three players for the upcoming year
Yoshica Spears, a 5-10 forward from Tyler JC Texas, and Hardin-Jefferson, Texas
Lorraine Odhiambo, a 6-2 center from Jacksonville College. Odhiambo is from Kenya.
Lakeshia Levi, a 5-11 post from Barton CC in Kansas. Levi went to Macon Northside HS in Georgia.

Next up: later today with two out & abouts from the Summer Jam tournament: the quarterfinals between MN Stars Borowicz vs Metro Stars Black and North Tartan 15 vs Metro Stars 19.

SUN 2-0 vs LYNX
Former Gopher Lindsey Whalen and the Connecticut Sun took the second game 75-66 against the Lynx yesterday. The Lynx had shooting problems yesterday. From the St. Paul Pioneer Press and the StarTribune.

18U NATIONAL TRYOUTS

AGE DISCRIMINATION
In Wyoming City, Ohio former girls basketball coach Deb Gentile has been awarded $398,831.04 (and four cents). $265,000 will go to the lawyers. Gentile was let go in January 2006 despite a 479-143 career record. A parent dispute was behind the firing. From the Cincinnati Enquirer.

REALITY
The chance of a girl playing high school basketball and then getting to the WNBA is 1/5000 (.02%). Getting to a NCAA school is 3/100 or 3.3%. From USA Today and the NCAA.

COACHING NEWS
Mark Maher has resigned as girls basketball coach at Port Huron Northern in Michigan. He will be spending more time with his family. From the Port Huron Times Herald.

John Wilson has resigned as girls basketball coach at Saginaw Arthur Hill. He will be the new boys basketball coach at Saginaw Heritage. Wilson led Arthur Hill to the State semifinals three times in his four year tenure. From the Saginaw News.

Assistant Emily Cline is leaving Buena Vista to be the head women's basketball coach at Knox.

Former Saginaw Valley State women's basketball coach Kim Chandler is now the Athletic Director at Macalester.

SIGNING
Andrea Blodgett has signed with Idaho State. Blodgett is a 5-4 guard out of Yakima Valley CC.

18U NATIONAL TRY OUTS
Here are what some of the players trying out think about the epic Celtic vs Laker finals.

MORE BASKETBALL ON TRACK
Rachel Banham of Lakeville North placed 4th in the 4 x 200 in the AA State tournament and her 4 x 100 placed 8th and set a new school record. Two of her relay teammates are also varsity basketball players: Katrina Nicholson and Kristi Leven.

NUMBERS DROP
There was a drop of 3.6% in girls basketball participation this season due to the season switch from fall to winter. From the Adrian Daily Telegram.

OPEN ENROLLMENT
The open enrollment amendment in South Dakota failed to pass. It would have required a player to sit out a year after transferring. From the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

ALL STAR GAME
The National Indian Basketball Coaches Association North Central All-Star Game took place at St. Paul Johnson on Sunday. Black beat Gold 67-64. Marque Lunderman of Red Cloud, SD was named MVP with 18 points. From the Rapid City Journal.
