MINNEHAHA redhawks 62, BLAINE bengals 49

#2 AAA Minnehaha broke free from a 28 all tie at half to beat the Bengals 62-49.

Both teams were hot to start the game. Minnehaha scored on four of their first six possessions with three 3 point plays of one sort or another to take an 11-4 lead. Rachel Hansen, back from her knee injury suffered in the AAA quarterfinals, had two --one from behind the arc, one the old fashioned way. Blaine zipped back into the contest with an 8-0 run with two 3s. There were four more lead changes the first quarter with Kirsten Goodroad scoring off the press to give Blaine a 17-16 lead.

There were four lead changes in the second quarter and three ties including the final points of the half.

Blaine had a 14 possession drought in the third quarter---nine of which were turnovers off the Minnehaha press. At the largest margin MA led 42-32.

Sara O'Dowd drained a three to start the fourth quarter and Blaine managed to shave the MA lead down to 45-42. A four possession mini drought stalled their comeback attempt. MA finished with a 8/9 offensive sequence with the last six possessions all scores. Sarah Peterson had six points at the line to close the game.

Minnehaha won the Concordia St. Paul Summer League with a sweep of White Bear Lake. The Red Hawks again rallied for the win in the first game and then broke free from a six all tie in the second to cement the win.

In the first game White Bear Lake led 11-1 with 6:39 left after a transition basket by Alexis Foley. Minnehaha took a time out and started their 13-2 comeback run. The Red Hawks were helped by 8 straight points off fouls. It was tied at 11 when WBL's Laura Davis made two free throws to go up 13-11 with 18 seconds left. Annalise Ballinger drained a shot from the right corner as time was winding down for a dramatic finish for Minnehaha, their third straight come from behind one point win.

The narrow wins were a thing of the past in game two. Ballinger again continued her hot streak with an opening 3 on the first possession. WBL matched that with three points by Hanna Iaizzo--one on a foul off an offensive rebound and two points the conventional way. It was 6 all when Minnehaha put the game into overdrive. They scored on 10/12 possessions including the last 7 in a row. Foul points accounted for 9 of the 19 points in the 19-4 run. WBL made a late three possession run, but the hole was too change the outcome.

Both teams were without key players, as every team I have charted this week has been. Minnehaha didn't have Katelyn Adams who is at 15u Nationals with the Suns Gregg, and Rachel Hansen is making progress in her recovery from knee surgery. It looks as if she will be ready to go at some point late in the fall. WBL missed Julia Dysthe, Rachel Regnier, and Carly Jensen, all three point weapons.

In the JV division St. Paul Central won the title. Jen'Von'Ta Hill turned heads for Central.

Minnehaha rallied for both wins in the semifinal round in the Concordia St. Paul Summer League tonight. Henry Sibley led 20-14 with under three minutes left. Anna Marie Martino delivered two 3s to tie the game. Bree Allen made one free throw with 42.9 seconds left to give HS a one point lead. On the next Minnehaha possession Liz Mrozak found Sarah Peterson on the back cut for the final two points. A desperation three by Katie Ahlstrom did not fall for HS.

In game two HS again enjoyed early leads as much as 9-3 with nine minutes left. Again the three ball helped Minnehaha back into the contest. Ballinger tied the game at 11 with a three. Ahlstrom put HS back in front with her own three. Then the game pivoted on a rebound. Henry Sibley's Emily Larson was fouled by Peterson. Larson shoved Peterson in the back after the play was over resulting in a technical foul. HS received one point for the foul, Minnehaha two for the tech. That still put HS up 15-13. Martino was fouled on a rebound under the HS basket to cut the margin to 15-14. The game winner again was scored by Peterson with 42.5 seconds left. HS had a great opportunity with a drive by Grace Arnold, but it lipped out. Minnehaha advanced to the finals.

Deciding on which game to go to when there are so many to choose from is a Sophie's Choice moment. I usually decide to go with teams I haven't seen yet and are on a list of teams that I feel I need to see. Last night I went up to the Red River Valley to watch Hawley & East Grand Forks two 8AA teams. They live in the same section as Crookston. I felt I better see both before the tournaments started. If you think the choices last night were rough, wait until section finals.

One of the games that I would have liked to attend was the AAA top 5 battle between #1 DeLaSalle and #3 Minnehaha. Luckily I have a reader submitted article that I hope you will enjoy. If you have written reports you can go to my profile and email me. So without further delay---

Red Hawks Submit to Tori Rule

In a contest to determine outright or shared ownership of the Tri-Metro West title, the visiting DeLaSalle Islanders defeated the host Minnehaha Academy Redhawks 58-55.

Minnehaha, known for its long-ball game, made three consecutive layups to start the game. DeLaSalle was ragged and over-amped at times during this sequence, but they soon settled into a rhythm, particularly after getting the ball to post Aaryn Booker. The rugged Islander post led all scorers with 19, all but 4 of those points scored before halftime. In the end, however, Booker's freshman teammate, 5-8 guard Sattoria Rule, made the key plays and points to seal the victory for the Islanders.

Throughout the first half, the Red Hawks kept things close by shaking loose from the DeLaSalle man-to-man pressure for open threes, and by nailing foul shots. Their inside defense on Booker was affected by two quick fouls to reserve post, 6-4 freshman Katelyn Adams.

Halftime score: DeLaSalle 31, Minnehaha 26.

The opening minutes of the second half featured increased defensive pressure and offensive execution by the Islanders, who built a lead of 49-37. The Red Hawks fought back on steals, stopping the Islanders for two consecutive possessions. Their zone defense, with 5-11 senior post Sarah Peterson on top and an active Adams playing more minutes than the first half inside, reduced Booker's inside touches.

Kovalchuk and the Hudnells, Keke and Meme, had some key plays, too, but the end game was very much about Rule. She was very active in the offense they ran almost every possession of the last ten minutes of the second half. With the score tied at 55 with less than a minute and a half to go, Rule made a hard drive to the basket, got fouled, and hit one of two free throws. The next possession, she hit the final basket of the game. Coach Frye had a good game plan to keep the interchangeable 5-5 -sons from shaking loose on screens for the remainder of the game. Minnehaha had one last possession to tie the game. 5-9 sophomore wing Rachel Hansen had a look but the shot was far short and the Islanders emerged victorious.

Oh, and BEST NATIONAL ANTHEM OF THE SEASON.

Minnehaha used their full court press to cause Blaine headaches in an opening game win in Wisconsin. Since the contest was across the St. Croix there were four eight minute quarters, not two 18 minute halves.

Blaine held one lead at 2-0. Minnehaha scored on five straight possessions on an 11-4 run. Sarah Peterson had four points in the flurry. Blaine was held scoreless for 7 possessions, four of which were turnovers. Also the foul situation hurt Blaine. MA was in the bonus with a little over 2 minutes left in the quarter.

The second quarter torpedoed Blaine's chances. The Bengals only scored six points, all at the line. Minnehaha added 18 to their totals. Rachel Hansen had 6 points for MA in the quarter. Blaine's pp100 for the quarter was 30.0 and floor % checked in at .150.

The game continued to flow to the Redhawks in the second half. The margin was 20 for most of the half with MA up 56-34 on a pull up by Megan Erlandson with about four minutes left. MA made some substitutions. Blaine started to click at that point. They ran off four straight scores and closed the game with a 6/9 sequence as they scored 15 points. That put their pp100 166.7 in the last half of the fourth quarter, and 53.4 for the first 3 and a half quarters. MA eventually put their starters in again. Erlandson had six for MA in the fourth.
