Anne Borgertpoepping, formerly of Owatonna (2007), has signed with Western Illinois. The 5-7 guard played last year with Kansas City Kansas Community College.

MISS BASKETBALL
The Minnesota Miss Basketball will be decided on Sunday. The five up for the honor include

The Mitchell Daily Republic has named Teri Ver Steeg of Platte-Geddes as their player of the year.

NUMBERS DROP
The number of girls basketball players dropped with the switch in seasons in Michigan this past year from fall to winter. From the Detroit News.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association may have to declare bankruptcy due to the $7.4 million lawyer bill they have to pay for the fight. They only have $6 million in assets. From the Kalamazoo Gazette.

COACHING NEWS
Rick Weegman of the Duluth News Tribune talks about the one and done years with their last three women's basketball coaches.

In happier days Karen Stromme was the coach at UMD. Last weekend she was inducted into the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.

New North Dakota State coach Carolyn DeHoff was back in Fargo and she talked to WDAY about the recruiting trail.

AWARDS
Texas State passed out awards at their end of the year banquet. Marie Moser of Cedar Rapids Jefferson was a senior there.

LAST WEEKEND RESULTS
MENOMONIE
Team Wisconsin Select - Samuels beat Metro Stars White in the finals.

43 Hoops Zuck lost to Team WI Select Doucette in the quarterfinals 57-50. Anna Cole, the 6-6 center headed to Kentucky, had 6 for TWSD. 43HZ then beat Southern Minny Elite and then the Metro Stars 15s 50-41 to take 5th place.

In the battle of the Furies the 15s beat the 16s on Sunday.

WINDY CITY
North Tartan 14U finished 3-1 at the Windy City Classic this past weekend.
On Saturday NT beat the Illinois Wolverines 80-21, the Illinois Lady Dribblers 73-29, and then the Michigan Shock 68-42. On Sunday NT qualified for the final four. The Missouri Thundercats beat NT 57-34 in the semifinals.

SWISH CLINIC
The Swish Clinic run by Tom Nordland will take place April 30-May 5 at the Urban Ventures Colin Powell Youth Leadership Center, 2924 4th Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55408.

TOURNAMENT RESULTS
BOO WILLIAMS
Metro Stars Black went 2-1 in the Nike Boo Williams tournament. They beat West Coast Premier 44-33 after trailing 20-25 at the half. MSB held the Premier to eight 2nd half points out scoring them 24-8 to take the victory.
MSB held Maryland Team Select to eight 2nd half points in winning their 2nd game 32-19.
Black lost to host Boo Williams in the final game of the pool 36-32.
Metro Stars Black will travel to Sioux Falls Miss Basketball, Nike End of the Trail (Oregon), and the Nike Summer Showcase (Chicago) in late June and July
North Tartan Larson is also at the BW tourney. No word on their progress yet.

DEEP SOUTH CLASSIC
The NC Heat made it to the Final 4 but lost the semi-final game to the Cy Fair Houstonians 42-39. The Heat have been ice cold from the field for the duration of the tourney, particularly at the Dean Smith Center (3 of 4 games have been at UNC, the 3rd game was at Duke Cameron Indoor Stadium). NC Heat also faced stiff competition. Their four opponents haven't lost any other games (Nebraska Bison CSS, WPA Bruins, Indiana Legends, and Cy Fair won all 3 of their other games).
Tomorrow the NC Heat will play the IL Lady Fire for 3rd Place

Cornhusker Shooting Stars:
NE Judds CSS 15U (Cornhusker Shooting Stars) girls basketball is at the Deep South Classic in Raleigh, NC held at the campuses of North Carolina, Duke, and NC State.
The Judds are currently 3-1 and playing for 3rd place against the Cincinnati Premier.

SUPER SOUTH TOURNAMENT
Here are today's schedules. The Minnesota Stars are playing Exodus NYC today. I have not heard any reports yet.

WINDY CITY CLASSIC
The MN Suns won all 3 games Saturday at the USJN Windy City Classic in Chicagoland, IL.
The Suns defeated the Crusaders from Sauk Valley, IL, 76-44. Kylie Gottsman (Osseo - 2009) led scorers with 16 points. Scotti Moats (Waconia - 2009) contributed another 12 from the post.
The Suns then squeaked by the Illinois Lady Lightning Platinum 56-52 behind 11 points each from Jamie Noonan (Richfield - 2009), Pam January (Richfield - 2009), and Jessica Fife (Osseo - 2010).
The nightcap concluded with a 55-46 victory over the Cincinnati Lady Tigers. Noonan led the Suns with 11, Fife added 10.
The Suns will play additional games on Sunday that are yet to be determined.
Three other Sun teams are unblemished at 3-0--MN Suns 14U, MN Suns 15U Greg and MN Suns 15U Ellen.

The Minneapolis Lady Cats won their pool with victories over Ill. Dribblers 56 -21; a 46 - 58 win over Team Kansas City; and a 58 - 43 win over Ill. Pizazz. Tacita Gonzalez and Brianna Williams have played well for the Lady Cats. The Cats will play the IIl. Blazers today at 11:45 am.

The North Tartan 15s were in the top level 17/16 at Windy City. They finished 3rd in their pool. They have two games today.

ALL STAR GAME
The Coaches all star games conclude today at St. Thomas.
The 3rd place game is at 1pm with 1A vs 4A.
The championship game is at 3pm with 2A vs 3A. Whoever wins, it will be their first time as Class champ.
Class A won in 2005, AAAA won in 06, and 07.
It was Metro vs Outstate from 1984-1999. In 2000 the classes were divided, but only AAAA played AAA in two games, and AA played A. In 2003 and 2004 the teams were jumbled together and were divided by colors---gold, green, maroon, blue. The current format started in 2005.
The most points scored in an all star game was AA in 2002 when the reached 118 vs class A (65).

Krystal Ellis (Racine St. Catherine) was named tourney MVP. Alyssa DeHaan (Grandville, MI) and Mia Johnson (Mpls North) each had 11 for Michigan State.

More Mercy: The Northfield News looks at the mercy rule. By the way there were 7 teams that on average LOST by 35+ last year:
AAA: St. Paul Harding
A: ECHO; Community of Peace; Oh Day Aki; Four Directions; Swanville; Fond du Lac Ojibwe
There were no teams that made the list in AAAA or AA.
There were many teams that on average lost by 25 or more.
I saw two of those teams last season (Harding, Swansville) and they both would have had the clock run in the games I watched.

The Grand Forks Herald looks at 1000 point scorers in Northwest Minnesota. They look at the reason for the increase in the 1000 point club. They should have added #4 games are four minutes longer now.

HEART HELP
Laura Griffiths of Cherry has had heart surgery seven hours yesterday and former senator Mark Dayton helped make it happen. From the StarTribune.

You may need to register to read the article in the Hibbing Daily Tribune, but last night there was a Northeast MN All Star game won by the White over the Red 86-75. Griffiths was on the players mind there too.

ALL STAR GAMES

COACHING NEWS
Tara Seifert will be the sole head coach next season at Chaska. She was co-coach with Bob Downs this season. Downs has retired. Both were named coach of the year by the coaching association at AAAA.

TRANSFER
Laura Bruce is moving to the Hopkins school district. Bruce played for Champlin Park. Bruce is a 5-10 NW Suburban all-conference guard who was CP's leading scorer averaging 14.3 pts a game and scored 400 total points in 07-08. She will be playing for Hopkins HS in 08-09.

In my rush to head to Des Moines yesterday I inadvertently omitted the Racine Journal Times all area teams. If you just want the list of players, here it is.

ODD FACT: Five for Five
I want to congratulate the Ellsworth Panthers on their back to back boys state tournament championship. I got my start as the head boys coach there in 1983-84. On the Ellsworth 2008 team there are players who are the sons of players I coached. That puts things in perspective.
The odd fact is that every school I drew a paycheck from made the boys or girls state tournament:
After Ellsworth I went to Mpls South as the head girls basketball coach (they finished second in the girls AAAA tournament.
After South I went to Osseo as a girls assistant and eventually head girls basketball coach (they made the AAAA tournament).
I also have coached at Cooper and Mpls Henry in volleyball and both those teams made the boys basketball tournament.
The lesson----hire me and your school will be in the tournament 20 years later.

SPRING BASKETBALL START
The spring/summer season will get underway tomorrow. The first MYAS tournaments begin on Saturday at Maple Grove HS, and Farmington MS. Both involve 14u/8th grade teams.
On Sunday there will be games at Highview MS in New Brighton (16u) plus Farmington MS.

I have also moved the AAU rosters/websites up and moved the winter/high school seasons down on the links on the right.
