VERBALS 09 & 11
Senior Alex Bentley of Indianapolis Ben Davis has verballed Penn State. The 5-6 guard averaged 15.1 ppg for the 24-2 Giants last season.

Sophomore Torrie Thornton of Carmel has verballed Purdue. The 6-1 forward averaged 7.1 ppg as a freshman.

Bentley is the 30th player overall in the Indiana class of 2009 to verbal and the 27th headed to a D1 program.
Thornton is the 1st player from the Indiana 2011 class to verbal, and the first 2011 listed in any state (that is covered).

LEAVING
First year player Tia Mays has left the Iowa Hawkeyes. The 6-1 forward from Des Moines East has left to focus on academics.

COACHING NEWS
UMKC coach Candace Whitaker has signed a contract extension through 2012-13. UMKC was 11-20 last year.

Hoosier Hysteria takes place on October 17 after the volleyball match

BUCKEYE VS BUCKEYE
It is former Buckeyes Katie Smith and the Detroit Shock vs Jessica Davenport and the New York Liberty for the WNBA's Eastern Division Finals.

Former Gopher Janel McCarville had 17 points to lead the Liberty past the Shock 60-56 in game 1.

In the West it was the Los Angeles Sparks over the San Antonio Silver Stars 85-70. Becky Hammon of Rapid City was held to 9 points.

6th PLAYER
Candice Wiggins of the Lynx was named the WNBA's 6th woman of the year.

The Metro State women's basketball team spent time painting at Dinosaur Ridge.

FALL LEAGUE
The Kennedy Eagles are also undefeated at the Minnetonka site. JFK is without Alexis Holt and Bailey Lund at this point.

HALL OF FAME
Jody Buck Stefonowicz (1989-93) will be inducted into the North Dakota State Hall of Fame. Buck (during her playing days at NDSU) played her high school ball at Lake City (1989) and was the girls basketball coach at Luverne (94-98) and St. Louis Park (98-02).

MINNESOTA REPORTS
BREAKDOWN AWARDS
Kamille Wahlin of Crookston is the Breakdown's Player of the year. Here are the rest of the members of the team plus some other picks and prognostications.

ALL STARS
The North Central All Star game takes place today in Bemidji. Boys and girls rosters are in the Bemidji Pioneer. There will be two girls games. The first game for the girls is at 3:15 at Bemidji State.

Next week the Coaches Association All Star games will take place at St. Thomas. The Park Rapids Enterprise looks at a pair of class A players Gretta Hjelseth of Nevis and Megan Cleveland of Menahga.

COLLEGE REPORTS
The Green Bay Press Gazette names Wisconsin's All State team. The requirement: you have to play for one of the four D1 schools in Wisconsin. Angel Robinson is on the second team.

WNBA NEWS
Los Angeles Sparks owner Carla Christofferson is profiled in the Grand Forks Herald. She is originally from North Dakota.

TITLE IX
The Michigan Daily News looks at women's athletic history at the University of Michigan before Title IX. There is a vintage photo, but not of basketball, but notice the backboard in the background. Try banks shots on that surface.

AWARDS
Kansas held their end of the year awards. Rebecca Feickert of Sheridan County, North Dakota took home one award.

Ohio's season is reviewed with 6 new records and the most wins in 13 years.

Michigan Tech handed out their end of the year awards. Catherine Rottier (Seymour, WI) was named MVP.

Kayla Groh of UW Green Bay (Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, WI) was named to the Horizon Academic All Conference team.

Anne Breland of Rochester CTC (Rochester Lourdes) was named to the first team NJCAA D3 All American Team. From the Rochester Post Bulletin.

WNBA SIGNINGS
Debbie Remmerde of Rock Valley and Northwestern, IA has signed a WNBA free agent contract with the Houston Comets. She is the all time leading scorer in Iowa High School history with 2756 points. She went to Iowa, but then left for Northwestern, IA and scored 3854 points there. From the Sioux City Journal.

WNBA DRAFT
LYNX MOVES
The Lynx traded Tangela Smith to Phoenix for #1 draft pick Lyndsey Harding. This pick fills a glaring need in the point guard department. My contacts are pleased with the selection.
The Star Tribune has a Q&A with Harding. The Pioneer Press looks at the big changes in store for the Lynx as they move to a more dynamic, athletic style.

VOGEL SELECTED
St. Peter native and South Dakota State grad Megan Vogel was selected 19th in the draft and is headed to the Washington Mystics. The Mankato Free Press has more on the local angle.
