NORTH TARTAN MELTDOWN TOURNAMENT

NORTH TARTAN CROSBY 49, OMAHA LAKERS 34

This is the first of four reports from the Meltdown Tournament. This was the first AAU tournament in Minnesota in over six weeks. Today was spent on the platinum division with the theme running throughout the charting Minnesota vs other states. Minnesota was 4-0 in the games I watched.

First a word about the gyms---it is safe to wear shorts, and you can forget about bringing a jacket.

In game one (that I charted), it was North Tartan Crosby rallying to beat the Omaha Lakers 49-34. NTC trailed 21-13 in the first half before finishing the half with a 14-2 run to lead 27-25 at the break. NTC continued their advantage in the second half with a 15-4 run (a combined 29-6 NTC advantage over the two halves). That was a 1/19 stretch for the Lakers or an arctic .053 floor %. The Lakers had droughts during the contest of 9, 9, and 8. Janae Burich led NTC with 13 points.

SIOUX FALLS WARRIORS 59, NORTH TARTAN CROSBY 50

There were three high school teams in this tournament with two from Sioux Falls. This squad is from Washington and they won the South Dakota State AA tournament this past winter. SFW has quickness and speed.
NTC was without the services of 6-5 center Janae Burich who hurt her ankle in the first round of games Thursday.

The word in this game comes down to Eide. Ashley Eide was a one person wrecking crew in the second half. In a rather uneventful first half Sioux Falls Warriors led 26-22 at the break. They broke free from a 20 all tie with three straight scores to close the half.

SFW scored the first 7 points of the second half building a 33-22 lead. SFW scored 11 unanswered points as NTC stayed in a 8 possession drought. Eide really took over at about the 10:30 mark with four defensive wraps in a five possession string plus four points and one assist. That is when SFW built their lead to 41-28. Going back to the first half NTC was a collective 3/20 or a .150 floor % and a pp100 of 30.0. SFW had a 21-6 run over that extended time. The biggest SFW lead came at 54-39 with 4:47 left after Eide scored on an old fashioned three point play after a NTC turnover. From that point on the NTC offense woke up as they scored 11 points in their last seven possessions (157.1 pp100). It was a case of too little too late as the Warriors took the game.

The #5 seeded North Tartan Crosby beat #4 Metro Stars White 75-51. NTC used hot shooting to advance to the semifinals.

NTC scored on six straight possessions after turning it over on their first to establish right away a 14-7 lead. Kelsey Evans and Sarah Hendricks each had 5 points in the outburst including a 3.

Together the two players combined for 34 points on the day for a solid one - two punch from the perimeter. MSW closed to 14-13 with a pair of free throws by Julie Kruse. NTC used a 10-3 run to zip right back in front 24-16. Evans again had five in that burst. MSW finished the half strong with four straight scores and a 7-2 run to trail 33-31.

NTC opened the second half with a 7/9 scoring sequence and a 16-2 run to cement their lead. Janae Burich had six in the run. MSW had three turnovers in the first 8 possessions to start the half. MSW had spacing concerns on the inside and that made it easy to defend. NTC kept adding to the margin with their biggest lead coming at 72-45.

The rest of the team didn't get open, but the player with the ball gets the turnover. defensively got too high when her player had the ball and they would look to drive around.
