FIRST ROUND
BLOOMINGTON KENNEDY eagles 45
NEW LONDON-SPICER wildcats 39

This game had rallys, comebacks, physical play and defense. In the end Kennedy, despite playing without starting point guard, and future Gopher, Shakila Boler and starter Alexis Holt beat New London-Spicer 45-39.

JFK won the race to ten with a 10-2 lead. NLS tied the game at the end of the first quarter with an 8 point flurry in their last three possessions of the quarter. Justine Dammermann and Taylor Thompson hit back to back 3s to narrow the gap. NLS had a 13-10 lead in the second quarter. That margin was the biggest by either teams. Kennedy knocked down a three on their last possession of the second quarter to lead 21-20 at the break.

Kennedy used that momentum at the start of the third quarter to build a 27-20 lead. NLS turned the tables with a 6/7 offensive sequence and 14-2 run. Michelle Hanson had six of the NLS points in that run. The momentum shifted at the quarter break. JFK scored the first six times of the fourth quarter on a 14-4 run. NLS closed to 41-39 with under four minutes left. That would be as close as they would get as they didn't score their last five possessions.

ROGERS BREAKDOWN TOURNAMENT
Blue Division Championship
NEW LONDON-SPICER wildcats 51, ROCHESTER LOURDES eagles 25

In keeping with the Rogers Breakdown big win theme today, New London-Spicer beat Rochester Lourdes 49-25 using the three ball in the Blue Division championship. These two are the Celtics and Lakers of AA basketball in Minnesota. This game also featured the #1 and #2 all time winningest coaches in Minnesota girls basketball history in Mike Dreier of NLS and Myron Glass of RL.

The contrast in this game from the Centennial game was the tempo and pace. This contest was more of a half court contest. NLS did press full court, but other than a few turnovers, it didn't factor in the equation. Balance was key. NLS had six players that scored between 11 and 6 points, Lourdes top scorer only had five.

NLS trailed 6-4 when they went on a 10-2 run that propelled them to the victory stand. In that stretch the Wildcats connected on two 3s--one each by Justine Dammermann and Cassie Ziemer. Lourdes closed to 14-11 after two three point plays of their own, the last a shot from behind the arc by Aubrey Neumann. Ziemer responded right away with her second three. That started a 9-0 run to push NLS's lead to 24-11. Taylor Thompson hit the fifth 3 for NLS to finish scoring in the first half and gave NLS a commanding 27-13 lead.

Lourdes had an eight possession drought stretching across the two halves. That lack of offensive punch prevented any serious comeback attempt. A NLS 21-2 run was the exclamation point. Lourdes went dry offensively 10 straight possessions. That put the margin at 49-19 with 4:35 to go.

6AA EAST SUBSECTION SEMIFINALS

SAUK CENTRE mainstreeters 37

In the rubber game of this series it was NLS topping Sauk Centre in a low scoring contest. NLS, for those that don't know, lost center Renee Henjum in January to an ACL/MCL injury. The Wildcats have had to adjust their attack.

Sauk Centre led at halftime 21-18.

NLS came out after the break with an 8-1 run as they took a 26-22 lead. SC battled back and had the lead one last time at 30-29. NLS then had an 8-0 run to open up the margin to 37-30. Both teams were methodical and deliberate in their half court attack. When you are playing ahead that is all fine and good. But SC could not shake anyone open vs the NLS 2/3 zone. Each possession saw precious seconds slip away. SC did close to 40-37 with 1:10 left. NLS made one free throw on their next two possessions to finish the scoring. SC took 15 seconds on possessions when the clock was under 30. In fact with only 2.2 seconds left it seemed they were oblivious to the clock as they never got a shot off.

Right now I need my rest. The roads weren't fun.
