Hopkins knocked Bloomington Kennedy from the undefeated ranks at Minnetonka with a 40-30 victory today. Hopkins led for most of the contest with Kennedy's only lead coming at 14-13 in the first half. Hana Potter had 10 points to lead Hopkins. Brittany Zins led both teams with 15 points for the Eagles. Both teams are now 5-1 at Minnetonka.

Both teams were missing players. Hopkins' Jenna Lillemoe was out with an ankle injury. Kennedy's Aubrey Davis is out with mono and Alexis Holt is out recovering from her knee injury.

Hopkins started off the game with three straight lay ups, while Kennedy didn't strike until Zins knocked down a three on the fifth possession. Hopkins maintained their lead up to 11-9. A three by Campbell turned the lead over to Kennedy at 12-11. There were three straight lead changes. Potter scored to put Hopkins in the lead for good at 16-15. Kennedy had a five possession drought at that time. After working the clock down, Laura Bruce knocked down a shot to put the Royals up 22-17.

Kennedy cut the Hopkins lead to two twice early in the second half, but an inconsistent half court game and missed opportunities at the line prevented the Eagles from closing any further. After a Kennedy time out the Eagles scored on a Zins put back to make it 28-24. The rest of the way Hopkins outscored JFK 12-6. The Royals had a 6/7 offensive sequence with five different players contributing. Kennedy missed six points at the line in the closing 7 possessions.

If you asked the average fan Kennedy would not have been their first choice to win the Sweet 16 tournament this weekend. However Kennedy capped off the weekend by claiming the title despite injuries and absences. The unlikely champs used their grit and determination to seize the crown. They didn't back down from any challenge and proved to the basketball community that Kennedy has a few players that can rise to the occasion.

New Prague had been racing to fast starts in their other games in this tournament. In the championship Kennedy played a 2-3 zone and NP struggled from the floor at the start. Kennedy imitated NP's fast starts with six straight points on their first three possessions. NP didn't score until their 6th possession. At the quarter it was JFK up 11-5.

In the second stanza NP cut the margin to 14-13 after a Maggie Weiers basket with 4:17 to go. That was as close as NP would get the rest of the night. Kennedy was stuck in a 1/8 sequence at the time. Kennedy finished the half strongly with a 9-3 run. Aubrey Davis capped the half with a coast to coast spinning lay up at the buzzer for a 25-16 lead at the break.

Both teams were anemic to start the second half. NP was the only team to score in the first 12 combined possessions. Also Kneeland started to find the range from behind the arc to cut the margin to 27-21. Brittany Zins did one better drilling twice from behind the line to push the Kennedy lead out to 35-23.

In the last nine minutes NP made another charge to close the gap to 39-35 after another Kneeland three. Kennedy met the challenge, handled the pressure, converted on five of their last seven possessions to take the title. NP down the stretch sputtered with only two scores in seven chances.

Bailey Lund of Kennedy had 18 points in the win.

Kennedy bumped off DeLaSalle in the second semifinal 51-43. DLS had a plus 8 differential in turnovers, but that wasn't the deciding factor. DLS had four more assists, but that wasn't the deciding factor. Even second chancers were tied at 14 apiece. The difference in this game came down to the free throw line. BK had 30 free throw attempts. DLS only 6 for the entire game. Kennedy was more aggressive to the basket, and once the fourth quarter rolled around they milked the line for over half their points in that quarter. BK attempted 12 in that quarter alone.

The Eagles scored 9 unanswered points in the first quarter to take an 11-6 lead. It was 18-13 at the quarter. DeLaSalle needed a GPS device to find the basket in the early part of the second quarter as they were caught in a 10 possession drought. At half time Kennedy led 27-19.

The Eagles maintained that advantage most of the second half. DeLaSalle did mount a serious challenge closing to 47-43 with under a minute left. A key rebound by Brittany Zins after a missed Bailey Lund free throw gave JFK some insurance points. Zins added a pair of free throws on the next possession to ice the game.

This game had rallys, comebacks, physical play and defense. In the end Kennedy, despite playing without starting point guard, and future Gopher, Shakila Boler and starter Alexis Holt beat New London-Spicer 45-39.

JFK won the race to ten with a 10-2 lead. NLS tied the game at the end of the first quarter with an 8 point flurry in their last three possessions of the quarter. Justine Dammermann and Taylor Thompson hit back to back 3s to narrow the gap. NLS had a 13-10 lead in the second quarter. That margin was the biggest by either teams. Kennedy knocked down a three on their last possession of the second quarter to lead 21-20 at the break.

Kennedy used that momentum at the start of the third quarter to build a 27-20 lead. NLS turned the tables with a 6/7 offensive sequence and 14-2 run. Michelle Hanson had six of the NLS points in that run. The momentum shifted at the quarter break. JFK scored the first six times of the fourth quarter on a 14-4 run. NLS closed to 41-39 with under four minutes left. That would be as close as they would get as they didn't score their last five possessions.

Summer basketball leagues are up and running, and it was the second night of the Concordia Summer League. This league plays three 14 minute games with the team gaining points for each win. That is why you see a 4-2 score (two points for a win). If you look at the points across the board Kennedy won 74-58. Fouls count as automatic points--1 point for non shooting fouls, and the team keeps the ball, 2 points for shooting fouls. That is why when you look at the pp100 the numbers are extremely high.
As is typical of summer games neither team was at full strength. Kennedy was without Alexis Holt (knee injury) plus Bailey Lund, and Raven Boone among others. Richfield didn't have the Januarys.

Richfield led early in game one 3-0. Shakila Boler arrived as the game was in progress. Once she took the floor the game changed. Kennedy outscored the Spartans 28-8 the rest of the first game. Boler had 11 points in that contest. Kennedy scored on six straight possessions and 11 of 12 to really put the game out of reach. The Eagles used the flex offense and were crisp in their execution. Richfield had a six possession drought when Kennedy had their initial burst.

Richfield jumped out to a 10-1 lead in game two. They scored on their first five possessions. It was Jamie Noonan that had the hot hand for the Spartans with 11 points in game two. Kennedy roared back with five straight scores to close the gap to 14-13. The scorers messed up and gave Richfield a couple of Kennedy points. With the added points Richfield stretched their lead to 24-16. Four straight Kennedy scores cut the difference to 26-23. Boler had seven straight points to put Kennedy in position to take the game. The last 1:14 of game two ended up scoreless.

Aubrey Davis had the hot hand at the start of the third game. She had eight straight points including two 3s to put the Eagles up 9-4. Kennedy scored on seven of the first eight possessions as they built a 15-6 lead. The Spartans battled back with Jamie Noonan scoring eight straight for Richfield including two 3s. That cut the margin to 17-15. With two minutes left Kennedy milked their flex. Kim Campbell grabbed a rebound and was fouled so it was 18-15 and Kennedy still had the ball. Kaylani Edwards drained a three for a 21-15 advantage. With time running out Richfield didn't have enough time to pull out the win.

Chaska won the rubber game with Kennedy 44-42. It was a tale of two halves. Kennedy led at the break 29-17, but the Hawks rallied with 27 second half points, the last two coming on a pair of Courtney Boylan free throws with 5.5 seconds left in a dramatic win.

Early in the game Chaska suffered through a seven possession drought and during that time Kennedy went on a 10-0 run. Kennedy had a 7/9 offensive sequence as their systems were clicking. During that time Aubrey Davis delivered two from down town. The margin ballooned out to 21-9. The rest of the half was even, but Kennedy clearly had the advantage with their quickness, snappy passing, and post attack. Davis had 9 points at half as Kennedy enjoyed a 29-17 advantage. The pp100 for Kennedy was 120.8, their floor % was .583. Chaska meanwhile was checking in at 68.0 and .320.

What a difference a half makes. Chaska opened with four straight scores and a 15-2 run over the first 14 possessions. Courtney Boylan refused to lose and lifted up her team. She knocked down the first bucket with a pull up from the left corner. Next Jenna Willems drained a three from the left wing. #3 came on a Ellen Degler shot from Willems. and the last came on a high low from Degler to Brianna Tisch. It is kind of like a chain, the previous scorer assisted the next. Meanwhile Kennedy had a eight possession drought, and 1/11 sequence. It must have been the south end of the court. Six of those possessions ended up as turnovers, two on offensive fouls by Alexis Holt. The fouls piled up and Chaska was in the bonus with 10:04 left. Chaska took their first lead in the second half on a drive by Tisch to make it 32-31. Chaska led until Shakila Boler hit a three from the left corner 36-35. Holt broke a 36 tie with a put back with under 7 minutes left. Boylan tied it up two possessions later with a drive. Kennedy edged in front with a free throw by Bailey Lund with 5:03 left. Boylan put the Hawks in front again with another drive 40-39. Davis, who hadn't scored in the second half, hit a bomb from the right wing for a 42-40 Kennedy lead with over 3:30 left. That would be Kennedy's last points. Two Chaska possessions later Degler canned two free throws with 2:26 left. It appeared Kennedy was holding the ball for the last shot, Kelly Boelter took a shot and Boylan rebounded with 1:12 left. Chaska was looking for the last shot and worked the clock down to 5.5 when Boylan was fouled in the lane. She converted both. The clock actually ran down to 4.7, but the table added .8. Boler drove the length of the floor and missed a runner. Boylan took in the board and the party began at midcourt for the Hawks.

Chaska Hawks 58, Edina Hornets 48

Chaska guards Courtney Boylan and Brooke Brown combined for 34 points from outside, while teammates Brittany Travis, Brianna Tisch and Ellen Degler dominated the interior, as the Hawks brushed off the Hornets in the second half. Boylan's deft passing against the Edina zone gave Brown several wide-open looks; senior guard Jenna Willems joined in the long-ball fest as well. A scoring drought and rebounding deficit spelled a long, slow fade by the Hornets, who were led by sophomore guard Taylor Young (18) and senior point guard Natalie Pastor, rounding out her high-school career with 11.

2AAAA SEMIFINALS
Bloomington Kennedy Eagles 58, Richfield Spartans 45

Kennedy sophomore guard Shakila Boler scored early and often, tallying a season high 28 points for the Eagles. Kennedy opened with a 7-0 run, never trailed, and weathered both foul trouble in the post and a furious surge by Richfield in the waning moments of the first half that carried over to the start of the second half. But the Spartans saw that golden opportunity slip away, owing to bad/muffed passes and shooting woes. Save for guard Jamie Noonan and a series of drives by Mandy Poke in the second half, Richfield was ice-cold from the field, with Pamela January's shot particularly lodged in the deep-freeze. Kennedy's depth was tested when a constant stream of fouls landed starting posts Bailey Lund, Alexis Holt, and Brittany Zins, on the pine in the first half. Senior reserve Kelly Boelter contributed points, rebounds, and rugged play inside. Richfield was largely unsuccessful in defending the red-hot Boler; after trying three defenders on her with similar results (dismal), they came with the double to start the second half, but were unable to sustain either it or their own comeback. Kennedy will tangle with Chaska in the Section 2AAAA Finals Friday at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

2AAAA QUARTERFINALS
BLOOMINGTON KENNEDY eagles 62,
SHAKOPEE sabers 20

#1 seed Kennedy used their quickness and defense to throttle Shakopee 62-20. Shakopee had a drought of biblical proportions---38 possessions stretching across both halves. Shakopee actually led 3-0 in this game. The next time they scored was with 14:30 left in the game.

This game, for a writer/spectator/fan that doesn't have a dog in the fight, was vegatables to the desert that was the first game. The outcome was a forgone conclusion. Kennedy just had too much quickness, strength and power for Shakopee's players. Kennedy dictated tempo and pressure and there was no real mystery what was going to happen in this contest. It was a 32-3 game at half.

Shakopee was able to come up with 17 points in the second half, 13 in the last 9 minutes.

Kennedy has solved the mid season blues when they lost five straight. Since that time the Eagles have won 9 in a row. Kennedy is 20-6. Shakopee finishes the season 8-19.

The South Tigers used a 14-0 run early in the first half to keep Kennedy reeling. They have now lost four in a row. The defensive intensity kept South on the prowl. Kennedy was stymied and stifled. They had an opportunity to close the gap in the second half, but a turnover gave the ball back to South and they nailed a three to make it a 10 point margin.

It was slow going to start this game. Kennedy led 7-5, and then South took over. The Tigers went on a 20-1 run. Kennedy was only 1/10 in their offensive sequence during the South explosion. The fact was the South defense forced 9 turnovers in that run. The Eagles had problems getting into their half court set and South was in control of tempo and pace. Former Eagle Ameshia Kearney had 8 points with two 3s in this back breaking sequence for the Tigers. It was 25-8 when Kennedy found the basket again (at least at the free throw line). Kennedy went over six minutes without a field goal. South stretched their lead to 29-13. It was South's turn to go into a drought. They went 8 possessions without tickling the twine. Kennedy closed the gap with a 9-0 run to make it 29-22. Kennedy made only five field goals in the first half, two were on second chancers, two were on transition baskets. Of Kennedy's 22 half time points 8 were on second chancers. It was 33-22 at half time.

The second half started off with a combined six possession drought. After that the flood gates opened. In South's next 16 possessions they scored 24 points, a 150.0 pp100 mark. Kennedy wasn't a slouch either at this stage with 18 points or 112.5 pp100. There was a lot of transition involved at this stage. The key moment came when the score was 39-32 and Kennedy had the ball with a chance to make it a five point game. A travel call ended that hope. Ephesia Holmes dribbled, used a screen, stepped back and hit a trey for a 10 point difference that was not to be bridged. The Tigers finished up with a 75-52 win.

What a difference a month and a half makes. Back on Nov. 30 the Kennedy/Chaska game was one of the better games we have seen this year. Up to last Friday Kennedy had one loss. Since then they have four straight losses. The whole atmosphere has changed. They don't look as relaxed or confident. South's defense and pressure can do that to a team.

In a battle between two premier point guards and future Big 10 players it was Shakila Boler (Minnesota) and Kennedy beating Courtney Boylan (Michigan) and Chaska 82-71. Both had outstanding perfomances, but the Eagles broke free from a 50 all tie and put the hammer down. Kennedy is now 2-0 in the rough and tumble Lake Conference.
Two players hit the 30 point mark: Boylan had 33, Brittany Zins of Kennedy had 31 and Boler had 24.

When I arrived at the game the parking lot was jam crammed full of cars. I had to park in the back lot. I was thinking it was going to be SRO (Standing Room Only). It should have been. Fans would have seen great performances all around. Apparently there was a band/orchestra event also going on.

Kennedy scored on their first possession to start the point production. Chaska held their biggest lead at 9-4 early on after scoring on 4 of 5 possessions. Kennedy responded with a 13-2 run to take a 17-11 lead. Chaska came back to tie it at 17. There more ties, the last coming at 23. Chaska had one more shot at the lead at 27-24. Then Boylan picked up her second foul and went to the bench. Kennedy seized advantage of her absence by scoring on their next five possessions. Chaska had a hard time against the Kennedy press, while having great success against the Chaska press. Boler and Zins each had a three in the 13-2 run. At the break it was 37-31.

Kennedy led 41-31 early in the half. Chaska responded with a 17-7 run on a six of eight possession streak. In that stretch Boylan nailed four 3s, some from NBA range. The other contributor to the run was Bekah Saugan with the other five points including an old fashioned &1. Kennedy put together a seven straight possession string and 11/12 sequence to take control of the game. Zins had 10 and Boler 8 in the 25-12 run. Kennedy led 71-57. Chaska tried to comeback. Kelsey Kalkman had three 3s in the comeback and Boylan kept up her scintillating shooting with a four straight Chaska scoring possesions. The hole was too deep to climb out of, and Kennedy was able to score off the press and when in the half court game. Kennedy showed great discipline and movement in the half court. They had 18 touches on one possession before Zins launched a trey bomb.

Look at the numbers. Kennedy has the top pp100 this season and is only the fifth team in three years to crack that number. Not one team from the 2006-07 season was able to do it. The top pp100 in the three years I have charted is 129.7. This looks like it will be a very good year.
Another interesting fact: Kennedy was 3 of 4 in converting their &1s. Chaska was 2 for 2.

The reason for the asterisk is my numbers came up with 29. It doesn't change who won or lost, but I am keeping at 31 since that what was on the scoreboard and the mind set of the teams during the game.

Points were hard to come by in this contest between two evenly matched squads. Richfield's Shannon Doig opened the game with a turn around post up basket, and then Richfield went into a 1/8 offensive sequence or 25.0 pp100 zone. Kennedy wasn't much better delivering four points in their first 10 possessions. Future Gopher Shakila Boler tied the game up at 7 (also her uniform number for the day) with a three. That got the JFK full court press going and they converted a couple of turnovers in the first half for lay ups. Richfield also awoke from their offensive slumber with Mandy Poke three points in two possessions to put Richfield down 11-10. Richfield led 14-13 at half. It was in this part of the game the missing two points occurred.

Richfield struck first in the second half with another Poke driving lay up to make it 16-13. Then Boler started to assert herself. After a Bailey Lund lay up, Boler scored seven straight (again #7) to put Kennedy in the lead 22-18. Richfield wasn't finished and they rallied to tie it at 24 on a Pamela January pull up jumper. Then it was Brittany Zins' turn to ratchet up the scoring for JFK. She scored 8 straight points with two threes bookending a basket to make it 32-27 for the Eagles. After a Poke free throw made it 32-28 there was no scoring for the next 13 straight possessions, 8 of which were turnovers as the game turned a little sloppy. Another driving basket by Poke with under 20 seconds left cut the Kennedy margin to 32-31. Boler was fouled and she made the front end of a one & one. January had a crack to get the score tied with a runner, but her shot bounced off and Aubrey Davis picked up the rebound to finish the contest.
