ST. CLOUD TECHNICAL COLLEGE cyclones 67
MINNEAPOLIS CTC mavericks 45

This is the first out & about of the 2008-09 season and it was a community college bash in Minneapolis. The visiting Cyclones stymied the Mavericks 67-45. This is Minneapolis' second game this season. The Mavericks don't have a player that was on the squad last year. Kristin Johnson of SCTC scored 8 of the first 10 points and ended up with 18 on the night. Johnson also had 8 defensive stops on the night with limited court time in the second half. Tiffany Yarke had a double/double with 10 points and assists. Nicole Lewis of MCTC led all scorers with 19.

Both teams scored on their first possessions. After that MCTC didn't score on 7 chances and after another two scores, had another 7 possession drought. So to start the game the Mavs were 3/17 with their offensive chances---for a chilly .176 floor %. Meanwhile SCTC, and Johnson, were eating up MCTC's defense. SCTC scored their first four times they touched the ball. Their offense sputtered for four possessions, and after establishing the inside game, the Cyclones struck twice from behind the arc as they built up a 21-6 lead. It soon mushroomed out to 30-12. MCTC then started employing a full court press. That pressure coupled with Johnson resting on the bench cut the Cyclone lead down to 30-21 as the Mavs ran off 9 unanswered points. SCTC had a 9 possession drought at the time. In fact the Cyclones didn't have an assist basket for 13 consecutive possessions---that included four times they scored. At half SCTC led 36-24.

SCTC didn't really bust the game open until the mid portion of the second half when they rattled off nine straight scores as they soon figured out how to combat the MCTC press. All told it was a 16-6 run for the Cyclones. Johnson was done for the night with about 13 minutes left in the game. Jen Zierden scored on three straight chances during the rush. At the widest SCTC led 56-32 with a little over 9 minutes left. MCTC did have an offensive flurry with a 6/7 scoring burst, but SCTC also was scoring on four of those possessions and the needle didn't move much on the Maverick deficit. There was only one score in the last 10 combined possessions.

MCTC had problems with the 30 second clock. Six times they were caught in shot clock violations. Part of that has to be due to the young nature of the team and the lack of playing with the clock in high school. There really wasn't a lot of transition in this contest.

In a Minnesota South Community College match up it was MN West closing with a 10-2 run to beat host Minneapolis 71-61. Ashlee Domine had 8 points during the run on her way to 27 points for the game.

If it is Wednesday it is community college night. And it was pretty lonely on the bench. There were more coaches than players. Only one sub remained for each team. Both teams approached defense differently: Minneapolis used the zone, MN West relied on man. MN West would look to run more on offense; Minneapolis would pick and choose their opportunities.

Minneapolis jumped out to an early 8-2 lead. MN West struggled early on with a 1/8 offensive sequence to start. The biggest Mpls margin came at 13-6. MN West showed their fire power quickly with a 7-0 run on three possessions to tie the game at 13. Stacy Bush hit one of her three 3s to tie the contest. Mpls was on a seven possession drought during the MW fireworks. That was the first of three ties. MW actually led 15-13 on a second chancer &1 by Domine. Brittany Monio put Mpls back in front with a three from the top of the circle. The biggest Maverick lead in this sequence was 28-21 after a Jessica Ray 3 off the glass. Bush immediately answered with her own 3 as MW finished the half with a 16-1 run. The Bluejays went into the locker room on the upsurge with put back at the buzzer by Cali Mischke. It was 37-29 at the half.

MW pushed their lead to 12 in the first portion of the second half. The margin stayed in that zone up to 57-45. Then MW went into the ice box. They were in a 2/15 offensive sequence, a 26.7 pp100 level and only .133 floor %. Mpls took advantage of MW's offensive slumber with a 14-4 run to cut the margin to 61-59 with 3 minutes left. Monio had 6 to lead the Mavs on the run. Mpls had two opportunities to tie it up, but missed shots on each of their two possessions. MW came to life with a five possession scoring string. It all started with Ashley Kirk's rebound. MW changed one detail of their offense putting Domine on the left block instead of the perimeter. They ran their secondary break and she scored two possessions in a row. Rosie Lewis scored on the third possession while Domine finished up the scoring. Mpls picked the wrong time to go into a five possession drought. Ray scored on a drive for the final Mpls points.

I feel like I am the grim reaper. For the third straight game a player had to leave after an incident on the floor. Amy Langenfeld had the wind knocked out of her and had to leave. She eventually returned.

If it is Wednesday it must be Community College night. Minneapolis CTC withstood a late rally by Fergus Falls to open the Southern Division play in Minnesota. It has been over a month since the last CC game, and with the high schools taking the day off the CC games presented an opportunity. The shot clock, an option in the high school season, was in full force tonight. No violations occurred.

Minneapolis built an 8-0 lead as FF didn't connect until their 10th possession. Only one was due to a turnover, the rest were missed opportunities. FF only had one crack as Charmaine Cross dominated the defensive glass early. She had 8 d rebounds in the first 12 FF possessions. FF fell into another six possession drought and Mpls pushed their lead out to 21-8. Brittany Monio had 11 points of her 19 first half markers. FF was able to narrow the margin to 34-27 at half time thanks in part to the 3ball game of Brittany Quistorff. She had four in the first half.

FF's offensive attack took a hit when Quistorff picked up her 4th foul with 18 minutes to go. She immediately sat down and Minneapolis took advantage of her absence to push their lead to 43-29, their high water mark. Cross had 7 points in their 9-2 opening run in the half. The margin remained near 12 for a good part of the half. With 6:20 left FF started to make their move. Quistorff returned to the line up and on her second possession she nailed a three. Soon FF connected on six straight possessions in the 13-6 run. Ashley Peterson started to penetrate and had 8 of her 9 points in the last 4:30. Her basket to finish the run cut the margin to 60-57. Mpls withstood the onslaught and pushed the margin back out to 64-59. Another Peterson drive made it 64-61 with about 10 seconds left. Quistorff picked up #5 and Jessica Ray went to the line. She failed to deliver, but the key rebound ended up in Nicole Morris' hands. She too was fouled and again didn't deliver. In the insuing scramble coach Williams from FF received a T for complaining about the lack of fouls on the rebounding attempts. Cross made one free throw, on the same possession Morris made one. So in the last Mpls possession the Mavericks were 2/8 at the line.

Minneapolis stayed with it more often than not. FF moved to man sooner.
FF also went to the press late in the game (under five minutes)
