MYAS 16U TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP
at Park Center
MN DYNAMITE 38, TRIPLE THREAT 16

MN Dynamite beat Triple Threat in a convincing 38-16 for the 16u championship. TT was missing post Amy Waterman and that impacted their scoring. Waterman had 19 in the semis, and TT did not find any replacement for that scoring punch. Dynamite used offensive balance (five players with 5+ points) and defensive balance (four players with five or more stops) in the win.

It was a relatively quick contest with only 49 possessions. Despite the score it was TT that struck first with a basket from the right corner from Danielle Davenport. Dynamite ran off 9 straight and were never really challenged after that. The score was 9-4 when both teams fell into a deep, profound drought—TT had 11 empty trips while Dynamite failed to score 8 times. It was over 3:30 before Haley Steinwand broke the bad luck for both teams. In the 11 possession drought for TT only four were on turnovers. In fact Dynamite had 9 more turnovers for the game (19-10) and still won the contest. Dynamite closed the half with four straight scores to make it 24-10. Sara Drangstveit had 3 of the last seven points, all on second chancers.

There were only 20 possessions for the second half. Again TT could not find the bottom of the basket for the first 8 possessions and was only 3/20 for the half. It is hard to come back with a .150 floor %. There really was no mystery on the outcome and Dyanmite walked off with the championship 38-16

MYAS 16U TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS

TRIPLE THREAT 44, MN HEAT BLACK 41

The second semifinal had more drama than the first with Triple Threat nosing out MHB 44-41. TT scored the last four points to take the game, while MHB went cold the last six possessions of the game. Again the players with varsity experience stepped up and delivered in this game. TT’s Amy Waterman led both teams with 19 points, and teammate Taylor Bare had a triple double with 12 points and 11.5 defensive stops and 10 assists, both game highs.

Both teams got off to a chilly start with only Waterman’s put back the only score in the first eight possessions. There were seven lead changes in the first half. MHB led 10-7 after a jumper by Brittany Flannigan. TT quickly took the lead with a 6-0 run (part of a larger four possession sequence) with the Anoka duo of Bare and Waterman delivering all the points. Waterman did her damage in the paint, while Bare scored in transition off a missed MHB shot. MHB was 1/10 in the middle of the half and in that time TT pushed their lead out to 17-12. However TT also faced the offensive desert with a five trip dry spell. That opened the door for MHB and they went on a 10-2 run of their own. Carlie Jensen provided the last six points of the run on two 3s. Jensen had 14 points the first half. MHB led 22-19 with 1:23 left in the half. TT finished off the half with six straight points on three possessions with Waterman, who had 11 in the half scoring on her fourth straight shot at the buzzer. TT led 25-22 at half.

TT pushed the lead out to 29-24 after a pair of drives to start the second half. A 7-0 run by MHB put them back in front with 10:49 left 31-29. TT had five empty trips during this time. Then MHB cooled off for five possessions. TT had their own 6-0 run and regained the lead 34-31. The lead traded hands three more times. TT led most of the second half, the biggest lead coming a 38-35 with 6:04 left after an Emily Clark basket. MHB scored four straight with a steal and lay up by Julia Dysthe to put them back up 38-38. On the next possession the Anoka combination of Bare and Waterman delivered to make it 40-39. Dysthe gave MHB their last lead at 41-40. On the next TT possession Bare and Waterman worked the screen and roll to put the Threat back in front to stay 42-41. Bare added an insurance basket with two minutes left. For the last nine possessions neither team moved off their score. TT turned it over once and missed five free throws. Those misses didn't prove fatal like Memphis. MHB turned it over twice and Jensen and Dysthe missed deep 3 attempts to finish the game.

MYAS 16U TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINALS
at Park Center
TRIPLE THREAT 44, SWISH 23

In the second quarterfinal I saw at Park Center it was Triple Threat more consistent with their offense in a 44-23 win over Swish. Swish is made up of Blaine players.

This was another game where neither team scorched the nets. The nets turned down right frigid for Swish. After a six all tie, TT out scored Swish 17-7. Swish faced droughts of six and 12 in the first half. Only four of those empty trips were the result of turnovers. TT's longest drought was six late in the half. TT did have four straight scores to initiate the run with post Amy Waterman scoring three straight times. Waterman had 12 of the first 23 points for TT. She was the recipient of many of Taylor Bare assists. Bare had 11 for the game. It was 23-13 at half.

It didn't get any warmer for Swish in the second half. The first 9 minutes TT outscored Swish 15-4. Swish didn't swish for 7 and 9 possessions. Meanwhile TT was rolling. They had a 5/6 sequence where the Bare-Waterman connection delivered on three straight possessions. Madison Delamarter had the hot hand for TT with 8 points in the second half.

A vast difference in free throw attempts indicated which team was more aggressive and attacked the basket.
TT used a basic weave up top looking to break the defense down. When a player saw an opening they seized the opportunity.
