MORE ON THE GBB YEAR IN REVIEW
With sooooo much to cover there were a few things that escaped posting last night and there are a few things that should be emphasized as I have received a few emails from throughout the region.
First off the things that were left off inadvertently:
Best pp100 in one game (10 possession minimum): Kiley Severson, Hayfield 216.7 vs Byron Feb. 19, 2008 (26 points in 12 possessions). to state it another way Severson would have scored 216.7 points if given 100 possessions. Many times a player that gets 26 points has between 23-27 possessions.
Best pp100 in one game (5 possession minimum): Ashley Runge, Grand Rapids 228.6 vs Cloquet Feb. 29, 2008. (16 points in 7 possessions).
Best floor% in one game (10 possession minimum): Kiley Severson, Hayfield .917 (11 scores in 12 possessions).
For the Newcomer of the year the honor goes to the players I HAVE NOT SEEN until this year.

This is a good time to talk about the all State team I named yesterday. There were players I saw only once or twice during the year that were All State caliber players (AP, or St. Paul Pioneer Press) that were not listed on my team. I only listed the top five players for each and they had higher pp100 in the game I watched.

For example in the one game team---players had the minimum of 147 pp100. That is cooking. Many decent players I saw only once had a 100 to even 120 pp100, but I saw five performances that were better. That is what that list is--a list of outstanding performances. There were outstanding players that did not reach that bar.

On the two view team the players again made the list because of a good pp100, good floor % AND they made the team of the week twice (either first, second or third depending on the week). Again I am not slighting any player or program, but if a player did not make the minimum, to be consistent, I did not factor them in the equation. There is no emotion involved in these selections.

It is easier for me to slice through the 100s of players if I keep those standards no matter how arbitrary they are. It is a performance based system.

For my book that I have publish in the fall I have a different system. There is no way possible I can see every player and every team. Through the years I have developed a method of grading out players that has been pretty consistent even if I don't see the players. It has survived the test of time and has been pretty accurate at identifying talent.

A word about what games I cover. I make a master list of games on the calendar, usually one month in advance. I have countless requests to come watch this team or that team. I thank the people that make the requests. I don't have "favorites" unless you think the favorites are teams that are in top 10 match ups. I did try to see top 10 vs top 10 type games when possible. I am driven to see the top 100 teams in the state. I will not go watch a top 100 vs a low level team. We also have a back up game in case the weather turns nasty. For example When we went up to Hawley to watch East Grand Forks the back up plan was DeLaSalle vs Minnehaha.

My advice to those that would like to be evaluated: 1. Get in the top 100 somehow. 2. schedule on off days--I know Wednesday is a forbidden night for many schools, but it is the biggest open night. Mondays are a great night too. In fact after the first of the year Mondays had the best games by far. Saturday matinees are another option. 3. Multiple game events will get my attention. I can state that I will be at the Hudson and Hamline events during the Thanksgiving weekend. I will be at the Breakdown event early in December (I am crossing my fingers that there is no weather incidents). I will be at a variety of Holiday tournaments. Those events are booked.

Indiana State's women's basketball team has secured oral commitments from:
Megan Burton, 6-1, Bedford North Lawrence, IN, for 2008; and
Andrea Rademacher, 6-2, Scottsburg, IN for 2009.
Burton is the 28th player from the Indiana 2008 class to verbal a D1 school and 34th overall
Rademacher is the 4th player from the Indiana 2009 class to verbal a D1 school.

COACHING
The St. Louis Park girls basketball position is listed as open.
Mora has a girls basketball position open.

PERSPECTIVE
Here is a message from Columbia Heights Coach Chris Buerman on the birth of his daughter and the complications involved.
Dear Friends and Family,

Jordan Christine was born December 26th, 2007. While labor and delivery went well, we knew immediately that there were many complications with little Jordan. She was transferred to the N.I.C.U. at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis the day after she was born. While there, she was diagnosed with Goltz syndrome. Goltz syndrome is a rare chromosome abnormality that results in multiple birth defects. It is so rare that most of the doctors we’ve talked to have never even heard of it. The list of possible problems associated with this condition seems endless. In Jordan’s case, the most significant problems at this time involve her eyes, skin, left foot, and kidneys. Her eyes are severely underdeveloped. She has already seen 3 different pediatric eye specialists. At this point we don’t know what she can see or how severely her vision will be impaired in the future. Jordan’s skin is very thin and sensitive. The “baby warmer” in the hospital burned her skin, but it is healing over now and hopefully we can avoid any more skin eruptions. Jordan was born without a left foot. She will have to be fitted for a prosthetic when she is about 6 months old. She also will have her kidney function monitored. Fifteen percent of Goltz cases involve mental retardation. So far, we don’t know if this will be the case for Jordan. We have to wait and see how she develops as she grows up.

Thankfully all of the major issues that Jordan is facing right now are not life threatening. Many infants with Goltz syndrome don’t make it as long as she has because their organs don’t function properly. We are relieved and thankful that Jordan is stable, her main organs seem to be functioning properly, and she is eating and gaining weight as a newborn should.

D3Hoops has released their All West Region team. Making the list is Buena Vista's Margo Muhlbauer (IKM, IA); Gustavus' Jess Vadnais (Hudson, WI). St. Thomas' Carrie Embree (Waukee, IA) made the second team.

Vadnais is also one of 40 up for the 2008 Kodak/WBCA All-America Basketball Team for D3.

NAIA
Missouri Valley's Bonnie Johnson (Osseo) made 1st team Heart of America All-Conference and 3rd team All-American in the NAIA

Also Jolene Christensen has been named the new coach at Missouri Valley. She replaces Keith Lindahl.

MERCY RULE
Here is Columbia Heights coach Buerman again with his thoughts on the Mercy Rule

Just some thoughts about a suggested rule change. When I was at Champlin we were 23-5 and had many opportunities to extend huge leads and took great pride on utilizing leads as teaching time. Now at Columbia Heights I find that time even more valuable and don't want to lose it.

As a coach of a program that is fighting hard to rebuild itself, I am terrified the 35 point mercy rule might be established. Our program would NOT benefit from this rule. For my team, playing against the other program's second and third string allows us to teach more effectively. Success against their second and third team is much different than beating up on our second team in practice. Not to mention practices make more sense to the girls when they had some success executing against the second and third string of the other team plus film sessions become far more educational. It has always been my belief it is our responsibility as coaches to use large leads as an opportunity to teach whether you are ahead or behind. The winning team can work with players that typically are backups and only get limited time or allow that hard working individual from practice the opportunity to score their first or only points in a varsity game. In my time as a coach I have never had nor seen a second string that was so good they didn't need to work on good offensive positioning and quality possessions.

Here is the New York Times article on the realities of college scholarships. Most don't cover the bill. Here is a quote, "parents and athletes who hoped for such money were much too optimistic and that they were unprepared to effectively navigate the system. RECRUITING/PLAYING ---AT WHAT LEVEL?

Maranda Dohrn of Lake City has made a verbal to UW-River Falls. Dohrn is the 63rd player in the 2008 class that is going to play basketball after college. She is the 5th known Minnesota player to go to a D3 school.

MITCHELL SIGNS
Minneapolis Edison prep star Julianne Mitchell has signed a Dakota Athletic Conference letter of intent to play basketball at Valley City State announced head coach Jill DeVries.
VCSU is an NAIA school. Mitchell is the 2nd player from the Minnesota 2008 class to go to an NAIA school and the 62nd overall known to have plans to continue her career next year.

Earlier VCSU signed Emily Goedert of Britton-Hecla, SD. Goedert is the 4th South Dakota player in the 2008 class that is known to commit to an NAIA school and the 11th overall.

BIG 10 TOURNAMENT

North Dakota State Coach Amy Ruley is stepping down. From the Fargo Forum.

JUNKER TO WINONA STATE
Amber Junker from Eden Valley-Watkins ended her prep career with 1001 rebounds and 1328 points. She is second in school history behind the great Janice Streit in rebounds. She will be playing her college ball for Winona State University under Coach Ballard.
Junker is the 60th player in the Minnesota 2008 class to commit and the 34th to go to a D2 program.

MORE MILESTONES
Abby Busch of GFW reached the 1000 rebound mark.

Katie Loberg became the girl's all time leading scorer at Princeton High School with her 21 points in a loss vs. Becker on Saturday. She now stands at 1,375 points, breaking Tessa Gronli's record of 1,369 points. Katie also ends her junior year with 990 career rebounds and 380 career blocks.

Erianne Bright, a senior from Cherry, is over the 1000 career rebound mark. she reached it on January 28, 2008.

MISS BASKETBALL EXPOSURE EVENTS & TEAM CAMP
Miss Basketball will be hosting three college exposure events this summer. The 13th Annual Miss Basketball Showcase on July 10-13 in Kearney, Neb., will feature 64 teams from 17 states. Last year, 194 college coaches from 28 states scouted the super-talented event. Games are played at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Health & Sports Center (host of the NCAA Division II Women’s Elite 8 in a few weeks).

The 2nd Annual Miss Basketball Big Show tournament on July 3-6, is open to teams with players who will be 9th and 10th graders in 2008-09. Last year’s event featured 32 teams from 11 states. The Kansas Belles topped the Minnesota Metro Stars 14’s in the championship game. The tournament is also at the UNK Health & Sports Center in Kearney, Neb.

The 8th Annual Miss Basketball Dakota Showcase will feature 32 of the top teams from an 8-10 state region battling June 26-28 at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Last year more than 60 Division II, III, NAIA and Juco coaches were on hand to scout the event. This event has been honored as the Girls Basketball Recruit’s best tournament of the summer each of the last two years.

The 14th Annual Miss Basketball Shootout on June 7-8 will feature 84 individual high school teams from across the Midwest. Each team will play 3 pool games on Saturday, followed by 3 tournament games on Sunday. Great facilities, certified officials, outstanding competition, divisions for large/small schools!

Emily Bose a 6-1 center from Murray County Central scored her 1,000th career point against the defending state champion Fulda Raiders on Saturday night. Bose scored a total of 26 points in the Rebels victory and went over the 1,000-point mark making her just the third Rebel in school history to achieve the scoring mark. Bose has now scored 1,017 points in her career she has also grabbed 631 rebounds, and blocked 273 shots. Bose this season has 491 points, 257 rebounds, 57 steals, and 120 blocks in 24 games. Bose is just completing her sophomore season for the Rebels and is on pace to shatter school records in points, rebounds, and blocks.
This marks the 58th player to hit the 1000 mark in Minnesota this year and the 2nd to achieve it in the sophomore class.

Closing in is Rachelle Eckman of St. James. She is 15 points from her 1,000 points after scoring 16 last night in a loss to Fairmont. Next up is GHEC on Tuesday.
Eckman plays all five positions. She is averaging 16.8 points, 13.6 boards, 3.2 asst., 2.9 steals, 1.5 blocks.

The Minnesota Lynx will be paying a visit to Columbia Heights High School on Tuesday for the girls basketball game against Chisago Lakes. The visit is intended to support the Hylanders' Breast Cancer Awareness Night.

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association is currently running its "Think Pink Week" through the end of this week at more than 600 NCAA women's basketball games. The WBCA's "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

Also, for twelve years, the WNBA's Breast Health Awareness program has focused on generating awareness and educating women about breast cancer in addition to raising funds for the initiative. The WNBA and its teams have raised more than $2 million to aid in the fight against breast cancer.

The Hylanders of Columbia Heights High School will be hosting this event in their efforts to help in the fight against breast cancer.

--On a personal note--my mom had breast cancer and is a 27 year survivor, so this issue is pretty close to home.

In one think pink college game yesterday many were seeing red.

AAU TOURNAMENT
The MN Comets will be hosting a tournament April 12th and 13th. Last year featured girls teams from 43 Hoops, Gym Rats, Comets, ECI, Northern Lites, Northern Stars. This year we are hoping to attract more of the metro teams as well.
