HOPKINS royals 55, MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH tigers 37

#3 Hopkins smothered #1 South in the first half holding the Tigers scoreless their first 13 possessions as the Royals built up a 18-0 lead. The Royals cruised to a 38-11 halftime lead as the defense was rock solid and the offense looked to attack at every opportunity. The Tigers were hampered with two starters out for non basketball issues---Tyisha Smith and Ameshia Kearney. With those two out Hopkins could really zero in on Tayler Hill. It was a bittersweet night for Hill in that she reached the 3000 point mark for her career. Hill scored her 3000th point with 15:05 to go in the second half. At one point Hill had 26 of the 28 points on the board for South.

Minneapolis North rallied from a 67-60 deficit in the last two minutes to beat Andover 74-69. The Polars finished with a 14-2 run. Brianna Edwards led North with 32 points.

The Youthful Polars grew up tonight. North, at times, had three 8th graders on the floor at the same time. They didn't quit and were relentless, getting to balls quicker than the Huskies.

#2 Centennial topped #5 St. Paul Central 68-56. This was the second straight year the Cougars downed Central in the East Bracket championship. Centennial led by as many as 12 early in the second half. Central cut that margin to 49-47 with 9:30 to go. Centennial finished with a 19-9 run to take their second title. Bridget Schuneman of Centennial was named MVP of the Bracket after the game.

Holy Angels rallied from a 7 points third quarter deficit to beat Menomonie 57-53. Kelly Kennedy scored what proved to be the game winner with 13 seconds to go to break a 53 all tie. The Stars' Laura Margarit scored 23 points (her uniform number), including 10 in the fourth quarter.

#2 AAA Minnehaha broke free from a 28 all tie at half to beat the Bengals 62-49.

Both teams were hot to start the game. Minnehaha scored on four of their first six possessions with three 3 point plays of one sort or another to take an 11-4 lead. Rachel Hansen, back from her knee injury suffered in the AAA quarterfinals, had two --one from behind the arc, one the old fashioned way. Blaine zipped back into the contest with an 8-0 run with two 3s. There were four more lead changes the first quarter with Kirsten Goodroad scoring off the press to give Blaine a 17-16 lead.

There were four lead changes in the second quarter and three ties including the final points of the half.

Blaine had a 14 possession drought in the third quarter---nine of which were turnovers off the Minnehaha press. At the largest margin MA led 42-32.

Sara O'Dowd drained a three to start the fourth quarter and Blaine managed to shave the MA lead down to 45-42. A four possession mini drought stalled their comeback attempt. MA finished with a 8/9 offensive sequence with the last six possessions all scores. Sarah Peterson had six points at the line to close the game.

RIVER FALLS wildcats 40, OSCEOLA chieftains 33

Once again it was across the St. Croix River to watch a game in Wisconsin. Host River Falls downed Osceola 40-33 in a battle between D1 and D2 teams. (Think AAAA vs AAA in Minnesota). It was the first contest for both teams this season. Wells scored 22 points for the Wildcats, more than half their total.

There was no score for the first seven possessions, five of which ended in turnovers. Both teams didn't make it easy for the other side. Both teams were athletic. You could summarize it this way---Osceola was deliberate in the half court; RF looked to run. For the quarter Osceola did have a couple leads, their last coming at 7-6 after a drive by Jess Martell, her 5th point. RF led at the end of the quarter 10-8. Six of the Wildcat points came on transition.

Osceola struggled in the second quarter. The Chieftains were 1/10 to start the 2nd quarter. The Wildcats weren't sizzling either with a 2/10 offensive sequence. RF led at the break 19-12.

Osceola closed the margin to 25-23 with 2:46 left in the third quarter thanks to free throws and crashing the boards when they missed. On two consecutive possessions Osceola went to the line and slipped the block out to score on put backs. RF's Wells responded with two straight baskets on the next two Wildcat possessions. RF led 29-23 headed into the fourth quarter.

Wells continued her hot hand with a three to open the fourth quarter to make it 32-23. RF then had six empty trips. Again Osceola rallied with a three by Lindsay Danielson. Again RF let Osceola get an offensive rebound on a missed free throw. The Chieftains turned the ball over however. Brea Tinney had a steal and lay up, and then stole the ball on the ensuing pass in, but Osceola was unable to convert. That kept the score at 32-29 RF. Once again Wells broke the drought and scored on two free throws as the Wildcats scored on each of the next four possessions. RF turned deliberate at this stage and Osceola started taking earlier shots in the half court game.

Tonight Coach Teas made is 2008-09 debut behind the camera. Last week he was on a golfing junket in Missouri.

Another interesting facet of this game---this was the second day in a row the Chieftains were playing. Yesterday it was Lake Holcombe. Today it was Osceola. There will be no back to back Chieftain games in Minnesota.

EAU CLAIRE IMMANUEL LUTHERAN lancers 63
LAKE HOLCOMBE chieftains 39

In a battle of two undefeated D4 teams in Wisconsin (think class A in Minnesota) it was the home squad Immanuel Lutheran picking up the convincing win 63-39. Last year both teams had 6 wins. ECIL is now halfway there to start this young season. Speaking of young, LH started a freshman point guard and their top scorers were two freshmen. Neither of these teams are currently ranked.

The gym is a quaint pannelled venue, the lighting is not updated, and there are four bleacher rows per side. There were lots of people early there, but a lot departed as the game wore on... especially since the Packers were playing on Monday Night Football. To show how cramped ECIL is for gym space, after the game what looked like a junior high boys team took the floor for practice.

ECIL got off to an 10-0 lead thanks in part to their domination on the offensive boards. The Lancers scored their first six points on put backs. LH started off the game with a 12 possession futility streak. The Cheiftains didn't score until 3:30 to go in the first quarter. Both teams were plagued by poor decisions and sloppy ball handling LH had 11 turnovers in the first quarter alone. (31 overall). ECIL was no better, and in fact worse, with 12 for the first quarter. They ended up with 34, but their turnovers were errors of comission, and rarely did they come back to haunt ECIL.

The start of the second quarter was similar to the first for the Chieftains with six blanked possessions. LH snapped out of it and had their biggest threat in the second quarter when they closed to 21-20 late in the quarter thanks in part to a 11-4 run. Right after that ECIL scored on three straight possessions to get a little breathing space before half. Katherine Kazemba started it off with a basket. By the break it was 27-22 for the Lancers.

The game really was decided in the middle of the third quarter when ECIL went on a 13-4 run to close out the half. Three steals and lay ups (or free throws on a fouled lay up attempt) forced a LH time out at 3:05 with ECIL leading 38-26.

Two big stats that leap off the page: ECIL attempted 18 free throws to the 6 attempts by LH. LH was content to take 3s most of the night, but their weak side wasn't there for rebounds. ECIL also had a 15-7 advantage on points off second chancers.

MARSHFIELD tigers 54, EAU CLAIRE NORTH huskies 34

In Wisconsin the #5 Marshfield Tigers roared over #10 host Eau Claire North in the season opener for both teams. Marshfield used their height, a strong defense, heady guard play, and an huge advantage at the free throw line to chain the Huskies. Both teams are in the biggest class (D1) in Wisconsin. This game also featured four players from the Team Wisconsin AAU program, so their were some familiar faces from the summer. Also a couple of players have signed already---Sam Price of ECN signed with D1 Kent State. Katie Wolff of Marshfield has signed with Winona State.

ECN had problems on the offensive end. One glaring stat is the free throw attempts---only one attempt all night. That indicates the basket wasn't being attacked very aggressively. Marshfield went to the line 26 times. And the margin would have been wider if the Tigers converted more in the fourth quarter. This was the first game for the Huskies without Hannah Quilling who ran the point for at least three seasons. The Huskies started out with Price running the show, but in the second half they switched over to Kaley Bernhardt putting Price on the perimeter. For the first half the Huskies had 11 turnovers. Marshfield had 12 all night.

The tempo of this contest was set early as the Tigers won the tip and scored a lay up. ECN didn't score until their 6th possession, and then only scored twice in the first quarter. The last time the Huskies were close was when they trailed 6-4. Marshfield scored off their defense or, when they were in the half court, they pounded the ball inside to 6-3 Carlson. ECN got into deep foul trouble trying to defend her and didn't have quick weak side help. Neither team was stellar on their pp100 in the first half as Marshfield led by the anemic score 20-12. (Marshfield 69.0, ECN 42.9).

The free throw parade started early in the 3rd quarter. Marshfield went to the line seven times in that quarter. A 7-0 run by the Tigers doubled the score at 32-16. ECN came out with a better sense of urgency in the fourth quarter. The inspired play helped cut the margin to 39-28 with 5:16 left. The Huskies just finished an 8-2 run to start the quarter. A Marshfield time out stopped that momentum. On the next two ECN possessions after the time out ended up as turnovers which led to Marshfield free throws. The potential comeback was thwarted and ECN cleared their bench with 2:33 left.

ELK MOUND mounders 48, ELEVA-STRUM cardinals 44

High school games started today in Wisconsin. So it was off on 94 to the East to watch Elk Mound beating Eleva-Strum 48-44. EM had an 11 point lead early in the fourth quarter, but ES rallied to 46-44 with under 1 minute to go.

You might ask why this game?
#1. It was fairly close----under 2 hours. Most of the other choices were over two hours. Plus it was mostly freeway driving.
#2. Eleva-Strum had 20 wins last year. Unfortunately their leading scorer, Brynn Salava, will miss her senior season due to a knee injury suffered during a volleyball practice.
#3. Elk Mound has a 6-3 junior center----Emily Harrison
Both these teams are in D3 in Wisconsin (like AA in Minnesota). This was a non-conference game. EM is in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference. ES is in the Dairyland.

The key point came in the second quarter (Wisconsin uses 8 minute quarters) when ES led 15-13. On two consecutive plays the Mounders connected on &1 plays, followed by two freethrows on the third straight possession. The first score by Emily Harrison on a press lay up &1 and then Jessica Heit made a put back and was fouled and scored. Jacci Myers completed the 8-0 run with two free throws after rebounding 88 feet away from the basket. Elk Mound led 21-15 at that point and Eleva-Strum spent the rest of the night trying to come back.

That margin was maintained throughout the 3rd quarter. In the fourth ES had a coupld of surges. The first they cut the margin to 42-37 with six unanswered points. EM had a seven possession dry spell during that time. The foul situation wasn't helping the Mounders either. EM didn't attack the press. They got the ball into Harrison who tried to take it up court against double teams. A couple of turnovers later and the Cardinals had cut the margin to 46-44. Harrison was fouled with 28.3 seconds to go and she made the first of two free throws. However Toni Semingson fouled out for ES taking some of their depth away. A turnnover by the Cardinals and resulting foul, put Jessica Heit at the line. She too made the first and missed the second for the final insurance point.
