SIGNING
Cedar Rapids Washington basketball player Sierra Williams (graduated Senior) has signed to play basketball at Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, Iowa for the 2007-08 season. Sierra played the 5 position at Washington.

I now have two verbal/signings up on my links on the right--the 2007 class and now the 2008 class. If you have any information on either the 2007 or 2008 classes let me know & I will list them. Look for Williams in the 2007 link.

THE GAMES AT AMES
MSB Elite 15U played in the Adidas Midwest Classic in Ames, and went 3-2. MSB Elite had some great shooting out of two particular players: Britanie Olson averaged 15 points per game and Kelsie Ammann of Lakeville North had 4 3’s in one game and 5 3’s in another game.
MSB played two teams twice over the weekend.

COACH TEAS' PET PEEVES
Here are the latest editions of coach Teas' pet peeves. Last week I listed #12-10. You can find the entire list on the right side in the links. Look under the gbbrecruit links 'instruction'

#9: Letting offensive players beat you down the floor. A coach I know well is famous for yelling "Get ahead!"
#8: Not knowing how to switch and recover on screens.
#7: Trying too often to block shots looking for the roar of the crowd. Boys are more guilty of this than girls on this. Bad things happen when you lose your feet: fouls, coming down out of position to block out, mad a fool of by a good ball or head fake.

AMES ADIDAS MIDWEST CLASSIC RESULTS
Today I traveled three and a half hours to watch six games of basketball. I am pretty bushed from the drive, my buddies ditched me today, so I was flying solo. That made the trip longer. Without any further ado the games
#1: In a 13u semifinal: Fairview (a MN team) defeated All Iowa Attack 60-54. Leah Szabla hit two 3s for Fairview to break a 54 all tie with under 1:28 left in the game.
#2 In a 14u semifinal: Minneapolis Lady Cats rallied for a 64-42 win over All Iowa Attack. MLC trailed at half time 29-26.
#3: In a 16u semifinal: Team Wisconsin Select 17 defeated Cornhusker Shooting Stars 66-53.
#4: In the 14u finals: Minneapolis Lady Cats beat Cornhusker Shooting Stars 65-58. CSS led at half 31-27. This is the MLC 2nd straight tournament championship playing up. Normally they are a 13u team.
#5: in the 15u finals: All Iowa Attack beat the Illinois Wolverines 64-55 in overtime.
#6: in the 16u finals: Team Wisconsin Select 17 beat the hosts All Iowa Attack 74-61.

RETIREMENT
Former South Dakota State coach Nancy Neiber is set to retire. Her 37 years has seen many changes in girls sports in South Dakota and for that matter the nation. She first arrived at SDSU in 1984. From the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

In case you missed it last night, I posted a story from Lafayette paper on the verbal made to Purdue by 6-2 forward, 2009 Sam Ostrello of Stanley County, SD. That is the second 2009 player to verbal from SD.

Ostrello Verbals

OSTRELLO VERBALS
Sam Ostrello, Stanley County, SD has made a verbal to Purdue. The 6-2 forward, 2009 has been turning heads at camps this summer. She doesn't play AAU ball. Ostrello averaged 15 ppg for the 15-7 class A team. Ostrello is the second player from the 2009 class in SD to verbal a D1 school. Earlier this year Katie Lingle from nearby Pierre verballed South Dakota State. For those of you keeping track: in the 2009 class so far---Iowa 2, SD 2. Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin have yet to have a player verbal from the 2009 class. From the Lafayette Journal and Courier.

Rogers Showcase Results

ROGERS RESULTS
Today at the Rogers Summer Showcase sponsored by the Breakdown. The format was four tournaments, one of which was a JV tournament.

In the White Bracket (which was made up two AAA, four AA and two A teams) it was small school Barnum taking the title over Pierz 50-36. Pierz led at halftime 24-19 and 34-28 in the second half, but Barnum with their 3 point shooting closed out the game with a 22-2 run. Barnum hit seven 3s in the contest.

In the Blue Bracket (one AAAA; 4 AAA; 3 AA) it was St. Michael-Albertville topping Morris 53-27. STMA led 21-15 at half. As you can see STMA had a very productive second half with a 32-12 advantage. STMA enjoyed five 3 point plays (in one form or another) in the second half.

In the Gold Bracket (6 AAAA; 2 AAA) it was again a smaller school taking the title and just like STMA it was a team from the Mississippi 8 conference---host Rogers. They edged Chaska in the title game 46-43. With 30 seconds left Jennifer Dowd hit a three for Rogers to put them up 45-43. Chaska had a chance to tie, but missed their opportunity. In Rogers' next possession Heather Brunn was fouled and she made one free throw for the final margin.
Rogers led early 15-8 in the first half. Chaska closed to 23-21 at the break.
Rogers again pulled out in front 36-30. Chaska went on a 9-0 run on three 3 point possessions of one form or another. Brooke Brown started it with a 3, followed by Courtney Boylan popping a three from the left corner. Brown again scored 3 the old fashioned way on a drive &1. Rogers fought back with their full court press. Casey Mann made a steal and lay up to tie the game at 41. Brown sank two free throws for a Chaska 43-41 lead. Camille Laughlin made one free throw to cut the margin to 43-42. Then Dowd made her shot for what proved to be the game winner.

I will have more on all three games next week with the photos and numbers. Probably on Monday.

Tomorrow I will be off to Ames, Iowa to see the finals of the Adidas Midwest Classic.
The news from Iowa is that the Minneapolis Lady Cats in the 14u division are 3-0.

A Look at the Lynx: Seattle, June 23

MINNESOTA lynx 78, SEATTLE storm 76

Seimone Augustus hit the game winner with 5 seconds left as Minnesota took revenge on Seattle. a look at the key factors in the win.

STARTS: Minnesota clearly dominated this feature with a 25-15 advantage. In the first five possessions MN was clicking at 125.0 pp100 and .550 floor % while Seattle was stuck at 75.0 pp100 and .300 floor %. More importantly MN's defense did not permit Seattle to score on their first possession in any quarter. This set the tone.
FINISHS: This went to Seattle 24-16. Of course the biggest finish belonged to Minnesota and Augustus with the game winner with five seconds. I don't know if the tank was empty, but the strong starts lost steam as MN checked in with 80.0 pp100 and .400 floor % with the last five possessions in each quarter. Seattle hit 120 pp100 and .500 floor %.
RUNS & DROUGHTS: Strangely enough Seattle had neither (five possession straight of scoring or non scoring). Minnesota did have one run on the day, in the third quarter with an 11-7 advantage. The Lynx also had two droughts, one in the first quarter, one between the second and third quarter. The differential was 9-0 for Seattle. The Storm only managed to score 1 point in the Lynx's second drought.
However Seattle did have some dry speed. They had three stretches that were rough. They were 1/7 in the first quarter, 1/8 between the second and third quarter, and 1/8 again between the third and fourth quarter. Combined Minnesota had an advantage of 28-7 during these stretches. That third dry spell proved disastrous for Seattle. The game went from a tie score at 58 to a ten point advantage for Minnesota 71-61.
LAY UPS: Minnesota dominated this category 11-6 (or 22 points to 12). The Lynx only allowed two in the first half. The Lynx struck for five lay ups in the third quarter for their best performance. When Minnesota wins, they control this stat.
PERSONAL COMMENTS: Lindsey Harding, the point guard, is doing a bang up job on the boards. She had six defensive boards, the same as center Nicole Ohlde.

Ohlde and her turnovers: She led the team in a category you don't want to lead--turnovers. Ohlde had six, three of which were offensive fouls. On the 10th and 11th possession in the second quarter she had two straight offensive fouls. She already had one in the first quarter. Perhaps after that call she would have adjusted her moves to avoid another call. She needs to increase her awareness.

Eshaya Murphy had a strong performance with 12 points on seven possessions. The Lynx need someone to deliver off the pine. Now the trick for Murphy will be to continue to be consistently strong off the bench.

The AAU Week That Was #12: Summer Jam

THE WEEK THAT WAS #12: SUMMER JAM
The Bloomington Kennedy Summer Jam wrapped up last weekend, and it seems as if every tournament at Kennedy is a swelterbox. That held true this time too. There has been talk of air conditioning being added to the building, but that might be two years off.
It was the tournament of playing up. It was the tournament of redemption. It was the tournament of frustration.

The tournament could have had the best 8 teams in one bracket, but that didn't happen. The 19s are absolutely thin so top level 16 teams were added to the meager field. But not all power 16 teams made the rise. IBCA Select I was left with their noses pressed against the window pane in the watered down 16 tournament. The top level 15 teams played up as did the 14s to the 15s. This seems to be a consistent theme. The strivers held their own and then some. The surprise team of the tournament was North Tartan 15s as they made the finals beating Wisconsin Select 16 in the quarters. They also had a big win against Quest in the pool play Saturday. IBCA won the 16s, but struggled in the quarters against North Tartan Crosby. It was IBCA's first tournament since the Iowa State tournament in April. Another in the playing up wins was a civil war win by Metro Stars 15s over their sister team Metro Stars Black 16s in the game to get into the 16 quarters.

Redemption was also a theme of the tournament. North Tartan Larson stormed back from a lackluster finish in the Minnesota State AAU finals with a strong finish against MN Stars Hested that left no doubt on where they stood. NTL looks much more confident than they did two weeks ago. Also in the redemption field was the Metro Stars 14 team as they defeated nemesis North Tartan 14s in a solid 52-42 win. NT 14 hadn't lost to a Minnesota team in eons if ever. Both were playing for the 15 championships. Along the way Metro Stars 14s beat the twin towers of Team Wisconsin Select 15s 51-46 in another big victory.

UNFORTUNATE TIMING & MISSING TEAMS
The problem with all these games is I can't be everywhere at once. The Inner City All Star Classic was also going on at Arlington in St. Paul. I had to miss that event. All the finals are at the same time in the Summer Jam (at least the 19, 16, and 15s) so I went with the big girls in that choice. At the MN State tournament I was able to watch all the 16 quarterfinals.
Most of the weekend I was trying to see teams I haven't seen before. That meant most of my time was spent with teams from outside of Minnesota, but I did manage to catch a couple of Minnesota teams that had eluded my sights. In fact I only saw one team twice all weekend, which was rare. The lucky team was IBCA Select II.

The tournament was a good chance to see multiple state teams in action as the summer regional tournaments really kick in. This weekend should have more in store in Ames, Iowa with the Adidas Midwest Classic. Which leads us to:

THIS WEEKEND
There are plenty of events this weekend. High School Action in MN include a Pacesetter tournament in Grand Rapids, another tournament in Walker, a Summer Showcase event at Rogers, along with the Star of the North State Games in Rochester.

Wisconsin has their All Star series at the Alliant Center in Madison on Saturday.

I still have tried to find a link for the Adidas Midwest Classic schedule. Couldn't do it.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
There were plenty of options this week. North Tartan 15s are on the rise. Metro Stars 14s had big wins. Eastview in the Lakeville North Summer League also had a strong showing with two critical wins. But the honor goes to North Tartan Larson with their statement win over MN Stars Hested. They are the fourth MN team in the 16u division to get the honor. Their floor % was .569, the fourth best of the spring season, but if you eliminate the games against teams that aren't high in quality NTL moves to number one on the list. MN Stars Hested is averaging 76.01 on defense this season and NTL shredded that mark with a 115.4 pp100.
For NTL their defense held MSH to under .400 floor %. When the floor % numbers are above .400 NTL is 1-2 and that one win was the overtime win over NC Heat in the Forest Lake Semis. Defense will get you through bad offensive performances.

They handled the full court pressure much better than they did earlier in the spring. The had eight players reach the gold standard of 100 pp100. When you shoot good, you look good and NTL looked very good against a quality team. This should boost NTL's confidence as they head into the upcoming national event season like the End of the Trail and Nike Nationals.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
This was an interesting race. However the nod goes to Jackie Voigt. Reliable and Versatile. She does many things well without the thunder and lightning. She led NTL with defensive wraps and also had a high number of assists showing her versatility. She is quietly, steadily improving her play and is a critical component for the success of NTL this year. She joins Kiara Buford as the second NTL player to get the honor. Buford nabbed it after the Forest Lake Tournament.

How do you make the team? #1 I have to see you. #2 the gold standard of 100 pp100 and .500 floor % is strictly enforced. #3 your team should also win. #4 If I see you multiple games I average out your scores. That means some players could have a series of good games, but then get skunked. I am looking for that consistent player that constantly delivers the bacon.

BOARD RESIGNATION
Frank Schindler, a board member at Lake Benton, resigned due to the controversy with the girls basketball coaching position. Check the last four paragraphs in the story in the Marshall Independent.

PACESETTER TOURNAMENT
There will be a Pacesetter Tournament in Grand Rapids tomorrow...Grand Rapids, Deer River, Staples Motley, Duluth Denfeld, Duluth Central, and Proctor will be playing. Pool Play starts at 9:30. Games are at the Grand Rapids Middle School.

In the 19u girls basketball championship it was a pair of 16 teams playing for the title. The game featured two of the powers in the 16 division, and oddly enough they hadn't faced each other yet this season. Both teams lost to NC Heat in the State tournament two weeks earlier, MSH in overtime in the semis, NT in the finals. North Tartan Larson came out prepared, focused and ready for battle. It appeared they were on a mission. NTL started off strongly and didn't let up as everything clicked this day. Eight of the 10 players were at the gold standard of 100 pp100 for NTL.

MSH had the early lead at 2-0 after Cory Montgomery scored on the first possession. Hannah Draxten knocked down a three on NTL's second possession. Montgomery scored a put back for a MSH lead of 4-3, their last of the game. NTL went on a 14-0 run with a 7/8 scoring sequence. Kiara Buford and Jenny Gilbertson each had four points in the run for NTL. MSH had an 8 possession drought during the same period. However MSH turned it around quickly with six straight scores as they inched back into the game at 21-17. Leading the 13-4 charge was Brianna Mastey with four. MSH, as fast as they got hot, turned cold with another 7 possession drought. It came down to missed shots on their possessions. Only once in that sequence did they get a second crack at scoring. NTL did not cool down, but revved it up. They were 7/9 in their offense sequence with the last five in a row. NTL had a 13-0 run with Kamille Wahlin leading it off with four straight points. NTL had balance and everyone was contributing. It was 38-20 with still over 3 minutes left. NTL led at half 44-27. Wahlin and Draxten each had 8 at half.

NTL maintained their focus and ravenous appetite as they started the second half. They scored the first four times they touched the ball, a 9-2 run. The game really was never really in doubt in the second half. MSH did get the margin to the 14 point range 65-51. The only blemish on NTL was the 8 possession drought in the later portion of the second half. They righted the ship with five straight scores to close the game. NTL made their statement and got a form of redemption with the win.

MSH did not have Georgie Jones play in this game. She suffered a slight fracture of the tibia plateau. She will be seeing an orthopedic doctor next week. The injury is NOT ACL related.

Also this game featured some high school teammates battling each other. St. Paul Central had NTL's Kiara Buford facing MSH's Theiarra Taylor. Becker's Rey Robinson, NTL faced three players for MSH: Brianna and Nicole Mastey plus Shelly Stemper.

Beyond that future Gophers teammates Brianna Mastey and Jackie Voigt guarded each other too.

The fact was there were plenty of good photos to pick from in this high level game. The lighting was great and I am starting to understand the camera better.

A Look at the Lynx: San Antonio, June 20

SAN ANTONIO silver stars 80, MINNESOTA lynx 73

A disastrous start hampered the Lynx in their game at San Antonio last night. It was a tale of two halves. SA took the first 46-29, while Minnesota took the second 44-34. The problem was in the differential. Good teams might come from behind to win close games, great teams dominate from the start.

1. STARTS: especially in the first half SA dominated with a 15-4 advantage in the first five possessions of each quarter. For the game it was 26-12. Being ready from the start, and I think the emphasis on the defense may be in order. SA scored on their first possession of each quarter. If the Lynx can get the stop that might put doubts in SA's head and boost the Lynx.
2. FINISHES: oddly enough MN controlled this portion of the contest outscoring SA 24-12 in the last five possessions of each quarter. SA took a siesta the last five possessions of the game. Obviously they had enough in the bank to weather the storm. This however is a good trend for the Lynx. Now they need to rev their motor up before taking the floor.
3. LAY UPS: The defense took a step back last night allowing SA 11 lay ups to 8 for MN. Amazingly that six points could have come in handy in a seven point loss. Most of that damage was done early & often with SA racking up 10 of those lay ups in the first half. Some half time adjustments may have been made with SA only able to squeeze one more lay up in the second half. Here is another tidbit to chew on: Augustus did not have a lay up in the game. Her shot that dropped the most was the running jumper with five.
4. DROUGHTS & RUNS: MN suffered through two droughts in the first half a fiver in the first quarter, and then a sixer across the first and second quarters. That opened the door for SA on a 16-0 advantage. SA had their droughts in the second half with a fiver in the third quarter and another fiver in the fourth for a 12-0 MN advantage.
Minnesota had one run of five between the third and fourth quarter for an 11-4 advantage. SA did not put together any run longer that four. However they were able to put together sequences like a 7/8 offensive splurge in the first quarter, and 6/7 twice in the second quarter.
