The weather did play some part with a handful of cancellations, but some games did slip through.

Milton knocked out Janesville Craig from the post season with a 57-40 win.

Janesville Parker is advancing with a 51-40 win over Kenosha Bradford.

TWIN CITY GAME
ST. PAUL CENTRAL minutemen 83,
MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH tigers 64

For the second time in three years these two teams have met to decide the best team in the Twin Cities. Today it was #1 St. Paul Central making a clear statement with an 83-64 win at #2 South. Last year South won at Central 80-72. The year before Central won at South 53-48.

As befitting a #1 vs #2 battle the gym was packed. And it was packed early even with the nasty winter storm bearing down. In fact they had to close the doors. They also had to refund some fans money due to no room. There was a who's who of coaches and teams in attendance with heavy concentration among sections 3 and 6 (Central and South's sections). Other top teams also came to see the spectacle. Here is a sampling of those in the house: Apple Valley; Benilde-St. Margaret; Bloomington Kennedy; Burnsville; Centennial, Champlin Park; Cretin-Derham Hall; DeLaSalle; Eastview; Hopkins; Mpls North; Mpls Roosevelt; Mpls Southwest; Park-Cottage Grove; Tartan; and Woodbury. I am sure there were others.

If you saw the first five minutes of the game you might not have believed either team could get past 50. Of the first 23 possessions combined only four found the bottom of the net. South had a drought of 7 and was 2/12, or 16.7 pp100, Central was 2/11 or 18.2. Both teams were keyed up for the big game and the adreneline was flowing. South turned the ball over six times in their first eight possessions. Central took better care of the ball, but had similar results. South had their last lead at 6-5 on a pull up by Ephesia Holmes. The last tie occurred at 9 on another Holmes pull up. South then went dry for five possessions while Central found their rhthym. They were 4/5 and had a 9-0 burst to take an 18-9 lead. At the 4:10 mark both teams were in a groove. Central had a five possession scoring string, South a four string. Abby Gust nailed two consecutive 3s from the right and left corners for Central. South's Tayler Hill didn't score until 3:45 left in the half and she did that at the line. SPC led at the half 41-24. For the half SPC had 15 second chance points, South had 5 second chance points. SPC's Angel Robinson had 10 at half.

The 17 point lead did get cut away to 50-40 with 13 minutes to go after a drive by Tayler Hill. South opened with a 16-9 run. Hill snapped out of her first half funk with 12 points in the run. Central soon reasserted themselves and led 57-42. Robinson had five points in the 7-2 run. South never closed the gap. Central had an answer for every score South produced. Both teams, as cold as they started were smoking in the second half. As a whole both teams were firing away at a .554 floor %. 82 points were scored in that half in 74 possessions--a 110.8 pp100 for both teams. Hill had 20 second half points for South. Robinson had 17 second half points.

If they have theme songs for teams SPC's should be "weapon of choice" by Fatboy Slim. "you can go with this...or you can go with that." They can attack from a variety of positions and angles. They can hit the 3, they can drive, they can post, they have weapons on the bench. Many were questioning the diet of cupcakes and twinkies and how SPC would perform against a team with a winning record (Central's last game against a +.500 team took place on Dec. 28). Those questions have been answered emphatically. I have charted SPC three times this year and each time they have improved their offensive execution measured by pp100 from 69.1 to 94.6 to now at 110.7. And the scary thought for the rest of the AAAA teams is there is room for improvement yet.
And still I wonder why USA today, Max Preps, et al. don't have Central in the top 25 nationally. They have two players that have already committed to D1 programs: Robinson-Marquette; Buford-Minnesota; and Black is getting attention; with Jones and Taylor clearly headed in that direction. Howard could also make that move.
South's offense comes off the dribble. They also used the free throw line and dominated that aspect of the game with 26 made free throws. But the offense revolves around penentration with out any movement of the other players, except maybe a ball screen. South is guard oriented and they were matched up against guards that were just as quick, but they were up against stronger and larger guards. The pressure caused turnovers due to soft, lazy, lollipop passes that were snatched. South never got their transition game out of the shed. This is the fourth time watching South and this was the lowest pp100, in fact their first pp100 under 100 at 86.5.

Today the Marquee matchup is the Twin City game at Minneapolis South with the hosts taking on St. Paul Central. It is #1 vs #2. game time is at 2:30, but my recommendation is get their early.
CANCELATIONS

The West Central championship game: Albany at Lac Qui Parle Valley

AAAA
In a rivalry game Hopkins thumped Edina 68-50. A total of 52 fouls were called with 59 FT shot. Both teams were about equal with 29 and 30 attempts. The difference was in the FG % with Hopkins hitting at 53.5% 23/43; and Edina checking in with 31.8% 14/44.
With Minnetonka's 53-46 win over Wayzata it creates a co-champion situation with Hopkins and Minnetonka sharing the Classic Lake title.
Hopkins led 30-25 at half.
Jackie Hiebert led Hopkins with 21. Hannah Muegge had a season high 18.
Lauren Young led Edina with 14.

CENTENNIAL cougars 85, CHAMPLIN PARK rebels 77

#3 Centennial won the NW Suburban outright as they beat #4 Champlin Park, the team that gave them their only conference loss 85-77. Centennial built a 22 point lead in the first half, but CP came within 73-70 with 3 minutes left. Centennial finished up with a 17-1 conference record, while CP came in at second with 15-3. Centennial is 24-2 overall, and CP is 23-3. The two could meet again in the 7AAAA finals.

It was senior night at Centennial and emotions were running high. Centennial came out firing on all cylinders. Megan Nipe scored on an 18 footer to open action, and Centennial connected on the first four possessions and 6/7. When the dust settled Centennial was up 15-4. They had connected on three 3s during the blitz. Their first five scores had a different player behind the shot. Centennial pushed that lead up to 23-6 with 12 minutes to go in the half. By 5:26 to go Centennial led 40-18 on a three point possession. Megan Nipe scored one free throw, but missed the second. However she was able to gather the rebound and it came back to her and she scored on a baseline drive. That was the high water mark. CP outscored them 13-8. CP was 5/6 on their last possessions of the half. It started with a Ali Schmidt three from the top of the key.

That hot streak continued over at the start of the second half. CP was 6/7 to start the half so it was a 11/13 possession streak over two halves. It was a 25-9 run with 7 players contributing to the revival. With 13:38 to go CP had cut the lead to 54-45. Centennial had a 1/5 offensive sequence with three turnovers, all unforced. CP moved to a 60-55 after a Theisen three from the left corner. That capped a 4/5 offensive sequence. CP managed to cut the margin to 3 at 64-61, but never could get the stop. CP had five straight offensive scores. Centennial was matching them with 3/4. CP cut the lead again to 73-70 on a give and go with Fuller and Gigler with 3 minutes left. But CP never got the stop on the four times they cut it to three. This time answer came from Allums with a deep three from the right wing. CP did not score for the next two possessions. They never got shots off. Both times Megan Nipe came up with big steals. Emily Becken scored on a drive to make it 78-70. Ali Schmidt scored on a post up for CP. After a turnover in the delay game on an errant Becken pass, again an unforced error. Theisen scored one free throw with 1:26 left to make it a 78-73 game. Kellie Schuneman made two free throws to bump the lead back to seven. Gigler scored one free throw after Nipe's fifth foul, but missed the second. Becken got the key rebound and Allums was fouled right away with 38.6 left. She missed her one and one chance. Gigler rebounded and then ran the flor and scored from a Fuller pass to make it 80-76 with 27 seconds left. Katie Huston was fouled, but did not hit her free throw. Allums was there for the rebound and that was the back breaker at 82-76. Fuller drove the lane and was fouled. She too only converted one free throw. Becken was fouled and she made one free throw. Burns had a desperation 3 misfire. Becken again came up with the rebound and Kellie Schuneman was fouled and delivered two more free throws for the final margin with 1.4 left.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was a tale of two halves. Centennial owned the first, CP took control in the second. Take a look at the #s

CP has had a habit, and not a good one, of trailing early and making comebacks. Against stronger teams the road uphill becomes more difficult.
Centennial, for the second time this year, let CP back into the contest. This time they hung on. CP is aggressive offensively with Fuller penetrations drawing fouls, or Gigler getting fouled in post ups.
If you look at the numbers closely you will see CP had a better floor %. Centennial had their winning margin thanks to the 3ball. Also CP did not convert at the line like last game. They left 8 points at the line.
As you can see below Centennial was more aggressive on defense. Part of the reason was Centennial had unforced turnovers---passes too high or footwork issues that couldn't be traced back to CP. But with that aggressive action comes fouls. Nipe fouled out and Allums was dancing with four.
This game was like a roller coaster ride with dips, rises and curves and 80 miles an hour. The crowd was big and boisterous. CP had one whole section full of boys clad in white who never sat down during the game. Centennial then had to match their passion. Chants were going back and forth all night. It was big time atmosphere for the first time this year in AAAA, almost collegiate.

Shot Selection Guidelines

SHOT SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
Here is a good article from David Friedman of 20 Second time out on shot selection.
In the article Doug Collins lists his four requirements for taking a good shot. I have seen all these rules violated this year many times over.

I would like to add one more: floor awareness.
#1 Do not take 18 footers, they are worth the same as a lay up and not as much as 19-9. I can't stand seeing kids stradle the 3 point line and heave up the world's longest twos.
#2 Also players come in too shallow on the transition and make the transition lay up much harder. Same goes for posting. Most players are too low on the blocks and when they turn they have no angle.

If Des Moines Roosevelt wants to defend their title they will need to beat Johnston Saturday at Urbandale.

Dowling is hoping for state berth #12 in a row. They will need to beat Ames to do it. The time has been changed in this game to 5 pm by the way.

Valley needs to get past Ottumwa to get to the big show. They too play at Urbandale on Saturday.

One way or another East will be in the tournament. The question is will it be Des Moines or Waterloo? The two face each other Saturday in Cedar Falls.

In a battle of top 10 AAAA teams, #5 PCG left no doubt and slammed the door defensively on #8 Coon Rapids, fresh off an upset win over Champlin Park on Tuesday. PCG is now 20-4 and has won five in a row. CR is 19-6. The loss snapped a six game win streak.

PCG stamped their brand on this game early with Katya Leick initiating the defensive intensity with 5 of the first 6 defensive wraps. On her first steal she went in and scored the lay up, and her rebound and pass to Jackie Voigt made the score 4-0. CR started off stuck in a 6 possession drought, they soon added another 7 drought to the mix as they trailed 13-6. CR did have a bust of action with two consecutive possessions worth three points. Chelsea Lyons hit a 3 from the right side and then Jazmin Townsend scored in traffic in the lane and was fouled. She converted the free toss and it was 13-12. PCG took a time out and finished the half with a 12-5 run. PCG finished with four straight scoring possessions. Tina Fisher had 5 points in the run. Chelsea Lyons came down and nailed a 15 foot pull up jumper at the buzzer to make it 25-17 at half.

The 6 and 7 droughts paled in comparison to the 10 possession drought in the second half. CR went 7 minutes without scoring. PCG opened the half with an 18-2 run. Voigt scored the first six for PCG. They also had five consecutive scores in the middle of the half. PCG only allowed two field goals when the regular rotation was in. Fisher scored the last PCG points with 4:30 left. CR's top two scorers Chelsea Lyons and Jazmin Townsend were a combined 0/8 with their possessions in the second half. Soon thereafter the deeper benches arrived and combined the two squads ended the night with a 1/16 possession string.

RF: on defense too tight to the weak side. had to leave the game in the second half with blood issues on the jersey. not in rhthym offensively. favored the right hand on dribble and was caught too often in traps.

PCG dominated the defensive end with physical play, active arms, and alert action pouncing on opportunities. This was the 5th lowest pp100 total of the year, and 4th floor %. They had 14 more defensive wraps than CR. The size and strength kept CR off balance and never let them get inside free and clear.
On offense CR was somewhat stationary. PCG was able to steer the ball to traps. CR didn't draw the fouls, while PCG converted 11 at the line.
PCG is looking stronger with the ball, and is coming out right from the start to stamp their brand on the game from the first two times I have seen them.
CR at times looks hesitant on offense. It seems three players are watching to see what Lyons and Townsend will do. The others don't help them get open often or help others get open.
