JUNE MADNESS?
The Summer Jam takes place this weekend at Jefferson (for the 16u bracket). Most of the top teams in the area will be there. The one Minnesota power team that won't be there is NC Heat. 8 of the top 10 teams will be there in the 16/17 division. There will be a couple teams playing up including North Tartan 15.
This isn't March, but we will have little 16U Bracket competition. Pick the winners. There will be no prizes, money, cars, even a can of Coke. All the winner will get is their name in the blog on their prognostication prowess. Go to my profile to email your picks in the 16u Bracket.

MORE BASKETBALL ON TRACK
Marissa Janning, eighth grader from Watertown-Mayer School and North Tartan 14U finished 6th in the 1600 and 9th in the 3200 at the State Track Meet last weekend. She set a new school record in the 1600 and now has the school records in both events.
AWARDS
Georgie Jones of St. Paul Central is the winner (female) of the prestigious Dave Winfield Award. The award was presented Sunday, June 8th. Brittany Dorsey of Central was also a finalist. Both won a financial scholarship to assist with college costs.
SUMMER LEAGUE
The Champlin Park Summer League opened last night. Four teams are 2-0 after the first round of games---Maple Grove, Champlin Park, Minnetonka and Totino-Grace. Here are the results and standings after day one.

LAKEVILLE NORTH SUMMER LEAGUE
DE LA SALLE islanders 34, HOPKINS royals 29
DeLaSalle used their quickness and persistence to beat Hopkins on the opening day of the Lakeville North Summer League. The ball was contested every pass, every bounce, and every shot all night. In the end it was a 13-4 run by DLS in the second half that was the difference maker.This summer league is more straight up regular rules. The game is divided into two 20 minute running time halves. Fouls are shot, and bonus takes effect after the 7th. There is stop time with two minutes to go.
Jamelia Hudnell kicked off the scoring with a three on the first DLS possession. Hopkins scored six points to grab the lead. Four came on second chancers. Another DLS 3, this time by Carissa Wolyniec tied the contest. There were three more ties in the first half, the last coming at 12 all. Tori Rule broke the tie with two free throws and that 14-12 lead for DLS ended the half.
Laura Bruce tied the game with a drive on the second Hopkins possession
in the second half. After that DLS outscored Hopkins 13-4 to take a 27-18 lead. This stretch lasted 11 minutes. Wolyniec scored and was fouled to put DLS up for good. That started a three possession scoring string. Hopkins went on a 7-2 run to cut the margin to 29-25. Hanna Potter made two free throws to keep the margin at four with 57.2 left in the game. Rule scored again to make it 33-27 with under 50 seconds left. Hopkins tried the three ball on their next two possessions, each time they missed and DLS boarded. Free throws finished up the game.Kara Elofson did not play tonight for Hopkins due to an injury. Hopkins had a deep, deep, deep bench playing over 12 players.
In the game next door it was Eastview over Apple Valley 36-28.

For a change I was there right from the start in this Early Bird tournament. This was a 17D2 match up between the school based Fridley Tigers and the Hurricanes from small Southwest Minnesota towns in the Tomahawk and Camden conferences. The Hurricanes are coached by Dale Bannerman of New Ulm. This contest reverted to running time as the Hurricanes turned the ball over 20 of 31 times in the first half.Oddly enough it was the Hurricanes that struck first with LoRel Christensen scoring. Fridley didn't score until their 7th possession. After that it was easy to find the bottom of the basket for the Tigers. They scored on four straight possessions. Meanwhile the turnovers were taking their toll on the Hurricanes. They went through a 10 possession drought and saw a tie game at four mushroom to 18-4 deficit. At half time the Hurri
canes crossed over to double digits but still trailed 25-11.Again it was slow going at the start of the second half with only two scores in the first 14 possession combined. The Hurricanes did cut back on their turnovers with only 9 in the second stanza. Erin Green rattled off nine straight points for Fridley pushing their lead out to 37-18 with 7: 22 left. The margin didn't move very much off that mark as Fridley won 46-26.
Later in the day Fridley lost to the Urban Stars 65-50 in the 17D2 championship.

CONCORDIA ST. PAUL SUMMER LEAGUE

White Bear Lake surprised defending AAAA champ St. Paul Central in three straight games in the Concordia St. Paul Summer League tonight. Each win counts as two points in the standings. It was the first time SPC has been shut out in the CSPSL in over seven years. WBL shot and moved the ball with crisp passes, and crashed the offensive boards hard. They were also quick to loose balls. Central was infatuated with the 3 shot on offense and caught off balance on defense all night.
Central led early in each of the three games. In game one SPC led 5-2 after a Samantha Robinson-Ricks basket. The first game turned when WBL put together a 5/6 offensive string. In that string WBL used the long ball three times. Rachel Regnier drained two of them. Central closed to 17-14 after a Kyana Johnson transition lay up. Central had another crack to cut the margin with 2:11 left, but Theairra Taylor's shot didn't fall. The next WBL possession highlighted a key problem for SPC all night---second chancers. WBL missed the first chance, and Dani Potter was there to get the put back points. She did a head fake and drove by an airborne Sierra Smith. Game one ended 23-16.
Game two was a bit tighter. There were seven lead changes early. The game 
was tied at 15 all when Central's offense stalled. They had five straight empty trips. WBL had 9-0 run capped by a three point possession. In the CSPSL a non shooting foul gets one automatic point. Carly Jensen was fouled on a reach and later in the possession Sarah Schoenthaler made a shot. Central's press was no mystery for the Bears. They converted lay ups off it. Game two finished up 26-17.
In game three SPC led 11-9 when WBL broke free. Again SPC's offense withered away. This time the drought was 8 possessions. WBL had 10 unanswered points. Hanna Iaizzo had four points in that burst. SPC's interior defense was lacking and blocking out was rare all night. Players would leave their feet at the slightest provocation. The result was WBL stepped in closer for better shots. The other results was a sweep for the Bears.

Delano MYAS 17 I tournament
TRIPLE THREAT 16s 70, ARMSTRONG falcons 43
This was a pool play game with both teams playing up. Triple Threat is mainly made up of sophomores (2010s) some of which were varsity players. Armstrong is almost exclusively made up of freshman (2011s). Again I arrived prior to the start of the game (at least on the schedule). By the time I got to charting it was already 15-5. MYAS is eager to get the games rolling apparently.In the last portion of the first half Armstrong did close to 25-20 with a 15-10 run. That was as close as it was going to be for the rest of the game. TT had scoring runs in the first
half of four and 4/5, while suffering through minor four possession droughts. Taylor Bare had 7 points (that I charted) at half as TT led 35-25. Bare was responsible for 7 more points with assists in the first half.TT stretched their lead in the second half thanks to a dominating presence on the offensive glass. They had 15 points on second chancers in the half and kept pushing the margin higher. Armstrong had scoring gaps of five and six. TT had 8 unanswered points at one stretch. Emily Clark scored 8 straight points for TT. TT's biggest lead came at 68-38.

A big factor in TT's win was second chance points. They dominated that category 19-4. TT had 15 second chance points alone in the second half.

NEWTON KANSAS SUMMER KICKOFF RESULTS
The MN Stars Jihad Lady Cats 15U took on Oklahoma Spirit in the semifinals and won 62-50. Tyisha Smith put up 22 points. MSJ won the championship over Missouri Valley Eclipse 45-40 as the Cats team defense proved to be to much for MVE. Kaylani Edwards did a really nice posting up with 10 points and 8 rebounds.
In the 13U division MN Stars Martin lost to Kansas City Metro Stars in the semifinals on a put back with three seconds left inregulation 42-40 However MSM did regroup to beat Kansas Team And 1 by thirteen to pick up the third place title.
COACHING NEWS
Joe McKeown is the new Northwestern coach. McKeown was the coach at George Washington. No word on if Kiara Allums of Centennial, who signed with GW, will change her plans. From the Chicago Sun Times.

For the second day in a row I arrived before the scheduled start of the game. For the second day in a row the game was already in progress. This time I arrived 10 minutes early. I didn't realize this tournament was on Eastern Time. When I arrived MN Suns Fassett was already up 17-1.
The difference between the two teams is age, experience, and height---MN Suns Fassett is primarily made up of 09s, The Comets 10s; The Suns are mainly varsity starters, and the Suns have five player 5-10 or bigger, The Comets have three.
I can't tell you how the Suns built their lead. After I arrived both teams played even. You will find that reflected in the stats
below. I got situated with 6:30 left in the first half. The Comets had three passing turnovers in the first three possessions I charted. Half of their 12 possessions ended up as turnovers. The Suns cashed in twice on those turnovers.
In the second half the Comets scored their first six points on second chancers. After that the Suns closed off that avenue. The Suns opened in a 1/2/2 defensive alignment. The Comets seemed to have success vs the man with lobs to Jena Thompson. The Suns used back cuts on their scoring chances. In due course the Suns won 43-27.

KANSAS RESULTS
MN Stars Martin 13u got by Missouri Lightning by 5 point in the first round. Heather Bowe of Eau Claire, WI & Phyliss Webb of Brooklyn Park both had 12 points. The late night 8 pm game went to the wire with Katie Stone of Eau Claire knocking down two free throws with 18 seconds left to seal the win 44-40 and push MSM into the Semis tomorrow morning at 11 am.
On the other side of Wichita, MN Stars Jihad 15u took out the Sparks of Oklahoma City 58-41. Brianna Williams, Sarina Baker & Kaylani Edwards all played exceptionally well. MSJ now advances to the Semis at 10 am. If they win they will move on to the finals at 2 pm.
ALL STAR GAMES
Wyoming beat South Dakota in a girls basketball all star game at Spearfish 93-88. Both states won each other's court. Cami Koehn of Colman-Egan led SD with 23 points. From the Rapid City Journal.

Ashley Tinglestad of Lake Park-Audubon won three events in the Class A Minnesota State track meet yesterday. Tinglestad won the 100, 200 and 400. She set a new record in the 400. From the Fargo Forum.

RESULTS FROM DELANO AND KANSAS
DELANO
Today I traveled west to Delano for the only tournament around this graduation weekend--the MYAS event in Delano. My day was spent watching three teams I haven't seen in three games at various 17 levels.
I arrived for the 4:10 game at 4:05 and they had already started. Triple Threat 16 year olds were up 15-5 over Armstrong. The Falcons did cut the margin to 25-20 late in the half. TT, however finished with a 10-5 run to lead 35-25 at the break. Armstrong tired in the second half and TT gained strength. the final was 70-43 for TT. This game was in the 17-1 division.
Next up was the Hurricanes, a team from Southwest Minnesota. Dale Bannerman, the New Ulm girls basketball coach at New Ulm, is the Hurricane coach. They faced Fridley, the only other school based team I saw today. Neither team got off to a rousing start with one score in the first 14 possessions. Fridley warmed up as the game went on, the Hurricanes did not. In the end it was the Tigers 46-26 with the victory. This game was in the 17-2 division.
The final contest again featured players away from the seven county metro area. The Northern Lights 17s took on the Suns Fassett. The Suns were early risers jumping out to a 9-0 lead. By half it was 40-14 and the contest held no mystery. The entire 14 minute second half was running time as the Suns triumphed 61-25.
I will have these out & abouts during the week starting Monday.
KANSAS
There was other action with Minnesota teams in Kansas.
This morning MN Stars Jihad Lady Cats 15U took care of the Topeka Rage 38-25. Sarina Baker led the Lady Cats with 14 points. In the Cats second game at 10:15 am they beat Oklahoma - "For the love of the game" 49-26. Aubrey Davis had 12 points. and 6 Rebounds, Tyisha Smith had 13 points and 6 steals in that game. The third and final pool game the Cats beat a scrappy N.W. Oklahoma Storm 58-39. Tacita Gonzalez had 10 points and 5 Assists, Brianna Williams contributed 12 points and 6 rebounds. The Lady Cats played in the winner bracket at 6:50 tonight.
Also in Kanasas MN Stars Martin 13U advanced 3-0 out of their pool. They played tonight at 5:45 pm against the Missouri Lightning. If they win they play the Nebraska CSS. Phyliss Webb of Brooklyn Park, Jasmine Scott of Brooklyn Park, & Josie Dillon of Robinsdale Armstrong have all been very consistent on both ends of the floor for MN Stars Martin.

The Ames Tribune has an article on Chelsea Poppens of Aplington-Parkersburg and her story on what happened to her in the Parkersburg Tornado. Poppens also plays with North Tartan Larson in AAU. She is expected to play next weekend at Bloomington Kennedy.
COACHING NEWS
UW Green Bay has hired two coaches for their women's basketball program. Mike Divilbiss will be an assistant Kari Flunker will be the director of basketball operations. Divilbiss was the head Idaho women's coach. Flunker is from Florence, WI and went to college at Cedarville in Ohio. From the Green Bay Press Gazette.

THE WEEK THAT WAS #10: FOUR LETTER WORDS FOR SCORER
This past weekend featured some outstanding performances by individuals that will have folks talking a long time. First off is the miracle comeback with Tayler Hill getting her lucky 13 points in a minute of action to lift NC Heat to the 17u championship over Metro Stars 19. Second Sari Noga put on a three point barrage in the 16u semis and finals as North Tartan 15 had double digit wins in all their championship games.
Both Hill and Noga had pp100 games of 200+ this weekend. Hill had 25 points in 12 possessions vs the Minnesota Lakers (208.3) while Noga had 25 in 11 possessions vs Minnesota Stars DeWitt (227.3). Noga is a pure shooter, Hill is better at creating her own shot. In either case both players can flat out score.

In case you missed NC Heat this past weekend, you might have to travel to watch the team. They may be done in Minnesota for the summer. Hill is off to USA Basketball tryouts for the 18u national team. She will be gone June 9-12 next week. The Summer Jam tournament is June 13-15 next week at Kennedy.
WEEK AHEAD
The summer leagues around the area really get under way. Concordia St. Paul started this week. Next week Champlin Park, Lakeville North, Worthington, and the Park Region (among others) tip off.
This weekend is a little quieter on the basketball front. Graduation and various spring sport tournaments hold attention. MYAS does have tournaments in play.
Further afield Mid America Youth Basketball hosts a tournament down in Kansas where MN Stars Jihad (Lady Cats) will play. At Kansas City in the Battle of the Border the Minnesota Finishers will be playing.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
The North Tartan 15 team played up in the 16u tournament at the Battle of the Hardwood and won by an average of 21 points. They are balanced, have an inside/outside game, have size, are athletic, can run the floor and will be a force to reckoned with for the next few years. This team is made up of seasoned high school veterans. Sari Noga was popping threes like candy from a pez dispenser. Others also can deliver the trey bomb. Angela Christianson, Gabby Boever, Kayla Hirt all hit for double digits when I was charting. There only losses were to older teams when they played up in the Windy City tournament. They are now 18-2 on the year.PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tayler Hill has the will to win and finds a way to win. Her 13 points in a minute were not the result of luck, but pluck. Hill understands the game better than any player on the floor. She can x-ray an opponents mind. She has marvelous body control as she slithers through the lane. She can create something out of nothing. She is a Picasso on the floor. This is her second player of the week honor this summer. She will be off to Colorado Springs next week trying to make the national 18 team.To make the teams remember the rules:#1. I need to see the player during the week#2. Player needs to have 6+ possessions#3. Player needs to be over 100 pp100#4. Player needs to be over .500 floor %#5. If I see a player in two games the numbers are added up and the average used. Some players didn't make the cut due to the 6 possession rule. Some had great numbers, but only five or four possessions.
The talent level this week allows for more names to be called.

Shakila Boler helps two teams offense flow smoothly. A true point guard, she can get the ball to the right player at the right time. Boler had 10 assists in the summer league game. In that game Kennedy had a pp100 of 138, a new high. Now some of that is point inflation due to no free throws and automatic points on fouls, but still Boler is a big factor in that number. HILL TRYS OUT
Tayler Hill will be one of 35 players trying out with the 18u National team for 12 spots. Tryouts are June 9-12. If she makes the team she will travel to Buenos Aires July 23-27. USA Today has an article on Hill.

COACHING NEWS
SDSU lost their 2nd year assistant coach this year as Travis Brewster is headed to the University of North Dakota.
Matt Sobiech is the new head girls basketball coach at Mound-Westonka. He has been the assistant there the past 3-4 years. Before that he was a student teacher and assistant coach at North Branch.
Jon LaBeau has resigned as girls basketball coach at St. Mary Catholic Central in Monroe, MI. The Kestrels have a 50 game winning streak in the Huron League. From the Monroe News.
Diane Robertson has resigned as girls basketball coach at Edwardsburg, MI. Robertson coached for two seasons. From the Niles Daily Star.

NC HEAT 51, METRO STARS 19s 49
NC Heat rallied from a 10 point deficit, not once but twice to beat the Metro Stars 19s. Tayler Hill went on a scoring rampage blazing away for 13 straight points late in the game to put the Heat on the verge. It was Katya Leick that scored the game winner as time expired leaving the Metro Stars broken hearted. Speaking of broken hearted, my camera battery died right at the end, so I missed the winning basket. That spoiled an exciting, great performance day.
NC found themselves in a hole rather quickly. The Stars jumped out to a 9-0 lead after their first five possessions. Four different players contributed to the scoring. NC Heat didn't score their first field goal until their 7th possession, and that was a put back. Off their initial offense it took until their 9th possession. The Stars were shining early as they built out a 21-10 lead Adrea Holler knocked down three 3s to lead the Stars. NCH didn't really start cooking until Hill stroked her own three, her first points of the game. That started an eight straight scoring spree by the Heat, a harbinger of things to come. Leading the charge in the first half was Megan Nipe. She scored eight straight points and had 15 for the first half including the final points of the half. NCH inched ahead 27-26 at the break.It was deja vu all over again in the second half. MS scored on four straight possessions, again with four different players doing the honors. That pushed the lead to 34-27. NCH opened with six empty trips and didn't score a field goal in their initial offense until their 9th possession. Is their a pattern developing? MS built out their lead to 44-34 with 3:30 to go. But then their offense stalled. They didn't score for four possessions as NCH ramped up the pressure. With 2:09 left Hill started her onslaught as went coast to coast with a rebound a
nd basket after a missed free throw by Laura Weber. It was all down Hill for the Stars after that. It was still 46-38 with 1:47 left after Carolyn Dienhart sank both free throws. Hill drove the lane, scored and converted the & 1 with 1:40 left. Dienhart was fouled, but missed the front end of the one & one. Hill grabbed the rebound and again drove the lane and again scored and again converted the & one to make the score 46-44 with 1:25 left. So in less than one minute (35 seconds to be precise) Hill had 8 points and she wasn't done yet. The Metro Stars took a time out and Courtney Boylan tried to do a "Hail Mary" pass. Hill was expecting the same thing as a rover and made the steal she drove the lane and this time had to be content with only two free throws. Boylan was fouled and she converted the second to make it 47-46 Stars. On the next possession Hill had the ball up top and, in a reversal of the latest efforts, drained a three, her 13th straight point, to take a 49-47 lead. Boylan was fouled with 32 seconds left and she made both to tie it. On the next NCH possession the defense jumped Hill. She had to give it up. In the ensuing scramble Katya Leick was left alone on the left block as Anne Berner had the ball on the left wing. In a battle of two 15 teams it was North Tartan beating MN Suns Greg 72-59 in the 16 championship. Sari Noga scored 27 points including five three pointers, her second straight game with 20 plus points and five 3s. These two 15s were both playing up a level. NT bumped off the Fury and MN Stars DeWitt (as I have reported earlier in the week). The Suns had a longer route to the championship. They opened with a four point win over the Finishers 51-47 and then beat the Stangs in the quarterfinals 62-49. They upset North Tartan Crosby 49-48 in the semis after trailing by double digits.Early on the Suns led 7-4 after two consecutive transition lay ups, and one &1 by Megan Stromen. NT went on a 13-2 run after that kicked off by a trey by Morgan Van Riper-Rose. NT had one offensive sequence when they scored five straight times later in the half. NT stretched their lead to 32-17 after a drive by Noga. The Suns had a four of five offensive sequence to finish the half and that closed the margin to 36-24. Noga had 10 points at the half.
NT scored the first three times in the second half with Nog
a accounting for all seven of the points. She scored on two cuts sandwiched around a three. Most of the second half the NT lead held steady around 12 points. The Suns did close the gap to 57-50 with five minutes left. Noga struck for two 3s in the next four possessions and the NT lead was pushed back to 14. Alexis Long nailed a three for the Suns to give them their last taste of a digit deficit 66-57 with under two minutes left. ZABEL TRANSFERS
Bri Zabel has transferred from Florida Gulf Coast to UM Crookston. Zabel is a 2007 grad of Northfield. She played in the Coaches All Star game in 2007 and played her summer basketball with North Tartan Larson.
