Out & About: Maple Grove/Wayzata

#10 posting 12.4.2007
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

MAPLE GROVE crimson 64, WAYZATA trojans 62

Maple Grove built an 11 point half time lead only to see Wayzata surge early in the second half to take a 44-40 lead. MG reasserted themselves and took a 58-48 lead only to see another Wayzata resurrection. The Trojans got as close as 61-60 with 46.8 seconds left. Free throws put the Crimson in the pink, the last two by Jennifer Field.

This was not the first choice for games today, but with traffic snarled due to snowflakes and delays of up to 2:30 hours going south on 169 we decided that this was the game to see. It turned out that it was the tightest game of the year.

Wayzata in the early portion of the game went inside with Christina Keup scoring the first six points after isolating defenders on her back. Wayzata in the half court swings the ball waiting for the right time. MG in the early going was led by the outside one two punch of Jen Field and Cate Cavanagh. together they combined for the first 12 Crimson points. MG went on a 7-0 run to take a 12-6 lead. Wayzata was stuck in a six possession drought. The next burst took MG from a 21-19 lead to a 36-25 half time advantage--a 15-6 run. MG scored on 8 of their last 11 possessions of the half. Julie Kruse had six of the points.

MG stretched that lead to 40-25 to start the second half. Wayzata then started to press and started to penetrate on offense. That led to a 19-2 run. The Trojans scored on 7 straight possessions. Teresa Thour initiated the turnaround with 7 of the first 9 points in the run. Abby Doran had six points, one from behind the arc, and one old fashioned three. The run finished with Kate Thompson scoring the last six points. Thompson finally cracked into the scoring column with 12:44 left in the game. At that point Wayzata led 44-40. MG then awoke from their offensive slumber and scored on their next four possessions to reassert themselves and lead 47-44. Taylor House kicked off the MG comeback with move inside. Eventually MG pushed the lead to 58-48 with 4:11 left. Wayzata was mired in a 1/9 offensive morass. The snapped out of it to finish the game with a 7 of 8 scoring run, the first six in a row. Doran had six points in the 14-6 run. The Crimson fell into a four possession drought. Wayzata was able to slice the margin to one a couple of times, the last at 61-60. MG got their mojo back with four straight scores to close the contest--all at the line. Wayzata had an opportunity to tie the game at 62 but the drive by Doran didn't fall. House got the rebound and Field was fouled and provided the insurance points. Wayzata scored at the end with MG not contesting anything inside the 3 point line.

Out & About: New Ulm Cathedral/St. Peter

#9 posting 12.3.2007
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

NEW ULM CATHEDRAL greyhounds 48
ST. PETER saints 37

Class A New Ulm Cathedral built up an 18 point lead in the second half and withstood a comeback rally by the hosts in a 48-37 win over AA St. Peter.

It was all NUC in the first half. They scored early and often, but was hampered by 50% free throw shooting. It was 8-1 after NUC's scored on five of their first 7 possessions. NUC scored in transition, or at the line because of fouls in transition, early. St. Peter on the other hand was content with playing on the perimeter. When they did score it was due to second shots. Five of their 8 first half points were on second chancers. The key part of the game was the epic 18 straight dry possessions by St. Peter to close out the first half. They went the last 8 minutes without scoring. Seven of the 18 possessions were due to turnovers. They had chances. Oh how they had chances. On one possession alone they had four cracks at scoring. By the same odd coincidence so did NUC late in the half.
NUC started the half with a pp100 of 114.3 and floor % .714. They finished the half 57.7 and .308. St. Peter for the half was even frostier with 25.0 and .125. That chilly first half offensive performance proved to be fatal.

NUC pushed their lead to 28-8 to start the half, the largest of the game. They would only score two more two point field goals the rest of the game. NUC maintained an 18 point margin throughout the half. The last time was at 40-18 with six minutes left. St. Peter then started pressing. Even though there really wasn't any NUC turnovers involved, it did ignite a sense of urgency. St. Peter finished the game with a 15-8 run. St. Peter did close to 43-35 with 1:17 left. After that point NUC halted their momentum closing out 5-2. Time was not on their side and the smaller school took the bus ride home with the win.

Notes from Behind the Scorers Table

NOTES FROM BEHIND THE SCORERS TABLE

Today marks the return of our special guest writer. Today's piece is on the view from the scorer's table. Take it away---

Notes from Behind the Scorers table

Way back when peach baskets were replaced with nets and the the girls weren’t allowed to cross over the half court line, I learned how to take care of the A team scorebook while playing for the B team. Little did I know that was the first step into a world that is only known to people with a sharp eye, a keen sense of detail and a sharpened pencil. A world full of basketball lessons, laughs and at times public disdain as I began to score games throughout boys and girls versions of traveling tournaments, AAU shootouts and finally making the Big Time...varsity hoops.

From my folding chair, I have experienced an insiders view with many sights and sounds:

-Like seeing which kids would sneak a peak at their point total.
-Or enduring coaches that yell non-stop. And then seeing those same coaches getting frustrated when their own players would get tee-ed up for complaining to the ref.
-I have observed the differences in vertical leaps between a 6th grade girls game and a 10th grade boys team, as well as the differences in the language those same players use.
-And yes, I've noticed which refs like to sip a power drink during timeouts. Or who will sit down and rest. What refs like to take shots themselves, and even for one day, I even saw a ref doing push ups between games to make sure he got his strength workout in.

As for sounds, I have been fortunate to hear some great anthem singers and pep bands.
And I've picked up the sighs from the bench when Billy shot yet again, instead of passing to the wing.

And I have been yelled at. Boy have I gotten an earful.
By the ref who wanted me to watch him give the number of player who fouled, NOT just write in what I saw.
By the coach who wanted me to change that same number to another player, and I refused.
By the mom who took the time to point out that not only was I horrible, but so was the volunteer running the clock, as well as the refs. This diatribe happened following a 5th grade game where her daughter fouled out. (and could have fouled out twice if they had counted all her fouls)

But what keeps me scoring basketball games is really simple. For the love of what's possible.
-To watch a player finally getting the start he had earned five games ago, and then go out and have the game of his life.
-To see the promise in the eyes of a bench player getting pumped up to go in the game.
-To enjoy watching a coach pull a player aside for a teaching moment, not a tantrum.
-Seeing firsthand how seriously refs take their position, and watching them make good calls in spite of what they hear from the bleachers.
-Having the best seat in the house for an upset of monumental proportions. At any age and skill level.
-Watching the tears in the eyes of the parents as they applaud for a player fouling out in their last game, scoring their 1000th point or even making their first basket.

And so I live for the next game. Armed with my #2 pencils and my bottle of water, I'll be writing down the possessions and tallying the totals of all players. But even more, I'll be counting my blessings that I've got a front row seat to all the twists and turns of a basketball game, and the magic of what can happen when a team believes they can do anything.

The Week That Was #3: Snow Go

#9 posting 12.2.2007
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

THE WEEK THAT WAS #3
The week started with “Destination Anywhere.” Even Google Maps couldn’t pin point Kimball High School. I had to stop to get directions from a local gas station. The week ended with a snow “event” and three hour ride up to Fergus Falls, only to see one game out of the six scheduled. In between there were two games where the pp100 topped 2006-07s best efforts. And it is only the second week of the High school season.
I think I saw the fastest a team can get to the bonus when South made it to the bonus with 3:12 into the game. Johnson had three fouls alone in one possession. Their first foul came in 8 seconds. Also this week, two premier point guards and future Big 10 players Shakila Boler and Courtney Boylan put on a show at Kennedy.

ODDS AND ENDS
Since I have been taking photos I have noticed the lighting at the various gyms. Kimball is a new gym (2002) and has lights that my Canon loves. The next night at Johnson the lighting was dreadful. The luminescence was the intensity of a dark cave.
Speaking of gyms I have been to two new ones this week: Kimball and Fergus Falls. FF has atmosphere, double deck seating, and an arched roof, but the seats were pretty empty with the snow event.
Concessions? Kimball did not provide hot dogs at their concession stand. Definitely not in the running for best concession stand this year.

There was carnage in the top 10 polls---Class AA saw the most carnage with five teams picking up a loss. It started on Tuesday with Jordan falling to New Prague. In continued with Eden Valley-Watkins, Cannon Falls, and Blue Earth falling. Later in the week #2 Crookston beat #1 Albany despite falling behind big early.
In class AAA four top 10 teams have a loss (St. Paul Johnson, Totino-Grace, Hill-Murray, and Hibbing). Class A had two fall (Goodhue, Bethlehem Academy), while Class AAAA had the most stability with one (Osseo) team knocked out of the listing.

NUMBERS
The numbers continue to be better than last year. Here are the comparisons
2007-08 81.62, .403
2006-07 68.40, .338
The improvement is mainly concentrated in the AAAA level. The 07 numbers are from the full year. There is a clear, distinct difference between AAAA and AAA---about 12 points better in the pp100. When a team gets over 100 pp100 and loses (Chaska) it indicates offensive ability is on the rise.
AAAA 08 87.95, .432
AAAA 07 83.72, .408
AAA 08 75.96, .364
AAA 07 73.16, .354

TEAM OF THE WEEK
Minneapolis South
went on the road to play St. Paul Johnson, a team that matched them with speed and quickness. South had their top scorer sit on the bench with three fouls early in the first half, and still prevailed in a solid performance. They scored often (plenty at the line) and held Johnson to a 64.5 pp100. So on both ends it was a convincing exhibition of power. They only allowed five field goals in the first half. South has a deeper bench than a year ago. Many of those players not only would start, by star on other teams. South’s back court is one of the premier collections in the state. Besides Tayler Hill, Ephesia Holmes is a steady performer and Tyisha Smith is the human blur. Their inside game is improving each time I see them.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Courtney Boylan
is continuing her strong performance string that started turning heads in the summer. Now she is up to close to 200 pp100. In other words every possession for Boylan you can expect 2 points. She only had three non scoring possessions against Kennedy. Now that doesn’t mean she missed only three shots. She missed some, but Chaska retained possession. She knocked down deep NBA 3s when defenders sagged off. She penetrated and hit pull ups when defenders lunged and took themselves out of position. She also distributes the ball. Chaska is never out of the contest when Boylan is on the floor.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
FIRST TEAM
Courtney Boylan, Chaska
Tayler Hill, Mpls South
Gabrielle Roberts, Mpls South
Tyisha Smith, Mpls South
Brittany Zins, Bloomington Kennedy
SECOND TEAM
Shakila Boler, Bloomington Kennedy
Krista Kaput, Hill-Murray
Carollyn Mobley, St. Paul Johnson
Bekah Saugen, Chaska
Nicole Smart, Ada-Borup

Out & About: Ada-Borup/Mt. Iron-Buhl

TIP OFF CLASSIC: ONLY ONE GAME
ADA-BORUP cougars 74
MOUNTAIN IRON-BUHL rangers 41

The Breakdown Tip Off Classic only played one game today as the inclement weather kept metro teams at home, and those at Fergus Falls wanted to get home before the roads became even worse. Even DGF a good 30 minutes away would not send their team.

For those of you that aren't familiar with Minnesota. Fergus Falls is about 3 hours to the northwest of the Twin Cities. I made the journey up this morning. I came back in three hours this afternoon. The conditions are by no means ideal, but I was able to go 60 miles an hour on the way home most of the time. Let's just say I have driven in much, much worse.

The games that were scheduled today will be made up later, but probably the opponents will change. The Metro teams will meet at Rogers at an undetermined date. That line up will include Rogers, Lakeville North, Park-Cottage Grove and Centennial.
The Outstate teams will go back to Fergus Falls with Becker, Crookston, DGF, Albany and Moorhead in attendance.
Both of these games will take place on a Saturday to be determined. They might not be on the same Saturday.

As it was the only game in town was the current Class A #1 Ada-Borup pressing Mt. Iron-Buhl to a 74-41 victory. AB used quick ball movement on the perimeter with snappy passing and player movement with cuts and screens in the half court game. More often than not they scored in transition off turnovers or missed shots, or, in rare cases, when MIB scored. If AB didn't score on the first crack they scored on the second or third opportunity in the same possession. If they didn't score from the floor, AB scored at the line. AB had 12 second chance points in the first half. AB also had 14 points in the first half off transition. Another feature for AB was the way the all hit the floor for loose balls. At times two players were getting raspberries going for a stray ball.

MIB actually started off with a 2-0 lead. After that AB ran off 13 in a row before MIB found the bottom of the net. MIB went through a 10 possession drought. MIB also had a pair of five possession droughts. AB led at halftime 42-19. Brittany Burke hit a three at the buzzer for AB.

It was more of the same in the second half. AB eventually led 71-33. Soon thereafter they put in the deep bench. MIB outscored the Cougars 8-3 to finish the contest.
