WHY DID SOME #1s LOSE?
MN
There have been some upsets in the sections. But were they really classic David and Goliath? 7A North teams 1, 2, 3, 4 all lost in the quarters. Their combined record was 68-30 for a .694 winning pct. The 5, 6, 7, 8 teams all had winning records however. Not really a David vs Goliath look. Their record and pct was 59-38 and .608. However Ely lost to #1 Chisholm on J9 68-23 and came back to beat them 57-54 on Wednesday. Ely has a 15-10 record now with a 4 margin.

Also in A: In 8 Red Lake County Central was upended by Grygla-Goodridge-Gatzke. This looks a little more David and Goliath. RLCC beat GGG three times during the season by 30 on D8, but then the next two contests were decided by 6 on D15 and 4 on J17. The trend was pulling GGG's way even though there record was a poor 8-18 going into the game. There margin however was a respectable -3.

Lakeview in 3 was bumped by #5 RTR. They split their series during the year with Lakeview winning the first on D12 by 21 and RTR taking the second on F3 by 16. This was not a gimme or neither was Lakeview blindsided.

The only 1 to go down so far in AA is Benson. Their record was 16-8 and they beat Lac Qui Parle Valley twice on the year. The first by four on D15, the second by 14 on F3 when LQPV had injury issues. Three on a match may have also been a factor here.

In AAA Waseca had the bad luck of having Lakeville South seeded 8. Waseca had played only 10 teams in either AAAA or AAA. There conference is primarily a AA conference. Of those 10 games only five were against teams that had solid records. They had averaged 62.2 for and 64.2 against for a negative two margin. This outcome was not out of the blue.
