#5 posting 3.18.2006
MN AAA Championship
Benilde-St. Margaret’s 54, Marshall 39
#2 Benilde-St. Margaret’s upended #1 Marshall after trailing at half 22-19. They doubled up Marshall 35-17 in the second half.
Everything was going to be challenged in this game. BSM played like they were on a mission. BSM started off with five no scoring possessions, but they turned it right around with six straight scoring possessions. They went on a 12-3 run. Kachine Alexander was the main event as she scored 8 of those points. Right after that run BSM in a manic/depressive way went 0/7 with their possessions. BSM led most of the first half, but Marshall took the lead at 1:29 with Kelsie Kruger’s lay up 18-17. Marshall closed the half with a 6-2 run starting with Kruger’s basket, and led 22-19 at half.
Marshall picked up where they left off with two straight scores and a 25-19 lead. That was the high water mark. BSM went right inside to Williams to start their comeback. BSM put together a four possession string and 8-0 run to take a 30-27 lead. Eliese Hasberry gave BSM the lead for good at 13:17 to go 28-27. Marshall was mired in an 0/7 drought with five of those possessions turnovers. Marshall again went 7 possessions without scoring. The problem this time was five missed shots. Marshall was pressing. BSM kept adding and padding it’s lead. There was no real drama, there was no real suspense. Kachine Alexander was shadowing Michelson throwing off the Marshall offensive rhythm all night. BSM closed out the night with seven straight scoring possessions leaving no doubt as to who the #1 team in AAA is.

BY THE NUMBERS
Benilde-SM 54, 62, 87.1, .419
Marshall 39, 62, 62.9, .323
Bench: BSM 17, Marshall 2
Points off turnovers: BSM 18, Marshall 6
Fast Break: BSM 12, Marshall 4
Paint ball: BSM 22, Marshall 18
Made free throws: BSM 19, Marshall 7
All these numbers add up that BSM was the aggressor throughout the night. They played to win, and played it physical. It looked like Marshall was playing not to lose. When the roof caved in on Marshall in the second half, they didn’t have the experience of coming back. Most of the time this year they would be far ahead so comebacks were not needed.
Next up: Hopkins vs Kennedy in the AAAA championship.
