Out & About: Cedar Rapids Jefferson/Dowling Catholic

#2 posting 3.9.2006

Iowa State Tournament 4A Quarterfinals Game #2
Cedar Rapids Jefferson 57, Dowling Catholic 55

For the second day in a row a #1 Catholic school was upset in the quarterfinals. Dowling Catholic joined Davenport Assumption on the sidelines as they ran out of time in the loss to CR Jefferson. It was hard to overcome Dowling's stumbling out of the gate.

Jefferson started off hot as they scored on their second possession and then the next four for a five possession run. That translated into a 11-3 run. All points were produced in the paint. They went into hibernation for four possessions, but then re-emerged for three straight possessions to end the quarter up 19-7. DC had one stretch were they were 0/6 on their possessions as the missed four shots, two of which were from behind the arc.

In a fairly even quarter DC edged Jefferson 17-15. In fact DC would win three quarters. However one trend was beginning to rear it's ugly head--fouls and free throws were hurting DC. Jefferson made 8 free throws that quarter, but DC managed only one.

The third quarter scoring was a bit slower in the scoring pace. DC opened with an 0/6 stretch and again a slow start hampered their chances of winning. They had three turnovers in that stretch. Jefferson droughts were not as severe, but they didn't capitalize on the opportunities. Jefferson led 42-34 headed into the last stanza.

Dowling kept pushing and pushing. They trailed by 11 with 6:33 to go. From that point they went on a 19-10 run. There was not enough time to get the job done. Caitlin Stachon's basket with 0.4 seconds left made it 57-55, but there was no time left to do anything execpt watch the ball to be passed in.
