Out & About: Treynor/Fairfield Maharishi

#7 posting 3.6.2006

Iowa 1A quarterfinals game #4
Treynor 50, Fairfield Maharishi 37

Another southwestern Iowa made it to the semis as Treynor took care of Maharishi. Maharishi actually held the lead early as Sophia Iwobi scored keeping up with the 49 points she had in the section final, but that was the last time they would lead. Treynor put together the best string of the 1A games with seven in a row after missing their first shot. No jitters for this team. Treynor outscored FM 16-2 during this run. It was not a one person show either, six players contributed to the blitz. However Treynor would go on an 0/6 drought to close the quarter. FM had one stretch of 0/7. Treynor led at the quarter break 18-7.

It was a fairly even 2nd quarter with no real movement in the lead. However the droughts were still there. FM closed with an 0/7 drought. Treynor had a limited drought at the same time with 0/4. Lea Hartigan of Treynor had the top effort in the quarter with 7.

The offenses were not scintillating in the third. Treynor had the better of it with 12 points in 14 possessions. FM had trouble finding the bottom of the basket connecting only three times in their 14 possessions. Treynor was up 15 40-25 going into the final stanza.

Treynor had an 0/7 string in the fourth quarter, and FM made up some ground with a couple of 3s and a free throw to make it 42-32 with 4:47 to go. That was as close as it was going to be as FM went on an 0/6 run looking for 3s. Treynor took the paintball strategy with Chehala Pace connecting on three straight scoring possessions for Treynor to bump the lead back to 48-32. Treynor moved on to face COU 50-37.

Height matters: Treynor 5-8.8, FM 5-7.6 the smallest contingent in 1A
Department of Defense: both preferred 2/3
