Out & About: Tartan/Cretin-Derham Hall

#5 posting 3.5.2006

Tartan 39, Cretin-Derham Hall 37

Tartan put together a strong second half, had balanced scoring and made the plays in crunch time to advance to the 3AAAA finals against St. Paul Central in a 39-37 win over #2 seed Cretin-Derham Hall. In beating CDH they avenged an early season 62-49 loss in the their own Tartan tournament championship.

CDH made me think I was going to see offense galore when they scored on their first two possessions but it was only a cruel hoax. The first half saw both teams go extended periods without scoring. It was also a see saw affair as CDH jumped ahead 5-0, then Tartan had a 5-0 run, followed by a 6-0 CDH run, again followed by a 6-0 Tartan run. That made the score 11 all. Alyssa Karel scored on an old fashioned three with a layup, foul and free throw to end the scoring at 14-11 CDH at halftime.
Looking at the droughts in the first half. Tartan had an 0/6 stretch with five missed shots; CDH went 0/10 with 4 missed shots; Tartan went 0/12 with 8 missed shots; and CDH followed with an 0/9 with six missed shots. To sum up Tartan did not score on a stretch of 18 possessions, but they were at least getting some shots off, even if they missed fired. CDH had 19 possessions with 9 involved with turnovers. Tartan did a better job with ball control, the shots either weren't falling or out of range, off balance.

All the ineptness of the first half stopped in the second half for Tartan. They were much more effective with shot selection and execution. Tartan scored their first four possessions and took a 21-19 lead on the second of Klingsporn's 3s in the second half. Alyssa Karel answered and put CDH back up 22-21. CDH maintained the lead until Klingsporn again dropped the 3 bomb to regain the lead 28-26. Tartan pushed the lead to 33-28 with over four minutes to go. This lead held steady. Tartan's Jenny Hooper put through two free throws with 50 seconds to go to make it 37-33. CDH put together a last minute gasp with Gibbemeyer scoring on a rebound and Katherine Hendricks scoring on a lay up after a turnover in the back court of the CDH press with 22 seconds. Tartan worked the ball around and Erica Jost drove and was fouled with five ticks left. She make the second of two free throws. CDH then threw an errant pass which Erica Jost making the steal. This time she made the first, and missed the second on purpose so CDH would not have a chance to get a prayer off. They didn't and Tartan moved on.

Tartan Player Evaluations
Starters
Nikki Klingsporn 9, 9, 100.0, .333 I think she is the key to the whole Tartan team. If she is on they may be the team to beat. She has the competitive drive, but, and I don't mean this in a negative way, plays hard enough to win. I had a player like her and she would elevate her game against the best and let others take the glory against the lesser teams. I get the same vibe from her. She doesn't get any thrill pounding the snot out of inferior opponents. RF: she needs to maintain that enthusiasm
Shawna Huset 0, 7, 0.0, .000 specialty is defense. RF: foul problems guarding Karel
Erica Jost 6, 11, 54.5, .364 likes to drive, sneaky to the basket. decent athlete. RF: strength
Jackie Goetzke 5, 7, 71.4, .286 lefty. outside shooter, rangy, long wing span. RF: needs to step up in the next game.
Katie Haas 11, 12, 91.7, .500 enforcer inside. power body. RF: unorthodox shot, needs to square up, needs to understand time and score better.
Bench
Nicole Berg 0, 2, 0.0, .000
Jenny Hooper 8, 6, 133.3, .667 good shooter, lefty. scorers instinct. RF: defensive intensity
Ari Johnson 0, 1, 0.0, .000

Cretin-Derham Hall
Starters
Alyssa Karel 15, 19, 78.9, .368 tugboat tried to get her team into port. cat quick, aggressive. nice moves with ball, decent body control. RF: size/strength. could stand to gain weight. needs to demand the ball in her hands in crunch time to make things happen.
Katherine Hendricks 9, 8, 112.5, .500 quiet player that is involved in all the right things--rebound baskets. dropped a 3. can shoot off the pass. RF: speed/strength, decisions/passing
Lindsey Laur 3, 14, 21.4, .143 RF: did not score a field goal all night. was not in position to score and did not assert herself.
Amy Denning 2, 4, 50.0, .250
Lauren Gibbemeyer 4, 5, 80.0, .400 doing a better job by staying out of foul trouble. defense inside is her forte'. can leap and snag balls that would be turnovers. RF: needs to have an offensive mind set
Bench
Carolyn Dienhart 0, 2, 0.0, .000
Sarah Hendricks 0, 2, 0.0, .000
Natalie Lyman 4, 3, 133.3, .667

BY THE NUMBERS
