Iowa Tournament 2A State Quarterfinal game #1
North Butler 56, Tipton 40
North Butler pitched a shut out against Tipton in the first quarter 13-0. Nothing Tipton did worked. Of their 12 possessions five ended in turnovers. When they did cough it up NB pounced. NB put together a 6 possession string where they went on a 10-0 run. Chelsey Jacobs had four points to lead NB during the run. Six points were the result of turnovers.
In the second quarter the dry spell continued for Tipton for five more possessions making the string 17 without scoring. NB scored twice during that time before Jackie Osborn broke the ice and found the bottom of the net for Tipton at 5:22 of the second quarter. Tipton actually outscored NB after that 10-8, but it was hard to overcome the epic drought. Kelsie Reeve drained a 3 with three seconds left to give some hope for Titpon, but NB led at half 26-10.
NB re-established themselves with scoring on the first three possessions and building a 32-10 lead. The rest of the quarter belonged to Tipton as they outscored NB 15-4. NB wasn't caught in a drastic drought, the worst stretch they suffered was an 0/4 period. But the pressure was eating at NB and Erin Brocka was sitting on the bench nursing three fouls. Tipton got great mileage off Ashley Miller as she had 8 points this quarter helped in part by two 3s. NB led at the break 36-25.
A three by Missy Miller cut that lead to 36-28 to start the fourth stanza. NB immediately scored and went on a 6-0 run to get a more comfortable 42-28 lead. Tipton wasn't quite done yet. They went on a 9-3 spurt to get that margin back to 8 with 3:05 to go. Erin Brocka put NB back in front 48-37 on three free throws over two possessions. The fact was time was running out, and bodies were running out as the foul game was catching up to Tipton. NB was also scoring on 6/7 possessions to close out the game. Brocka had 12 points in crucial times during the stretch run. Tipton was playing the trey game with four bombs this quarter. But as they started the game cold, they finished, but not as dramatically with an 0/5 string. NB won 54-40 and moved on to face AGSWR in the semis on Thursday.
Height Matters: North Butler 5-9.6, Tipton 5.78
Department of Defense: much more intense than in the 1A games. pressure was everywhere, footwork was very nice for NB, body position had players sitting even off the ball.
