Out & About: AGSWR/Solon

#1 posting 3.7.2006

Iowa State 2A Tournament Quarterfinals game #2
AGSWR 67, Solon 48

Just as in the previous game an Eastern Iowa Hawkeye conference team got off to a sluggish start. Put forth great effort, but it wasn't enough as the bigger, strong, deeper AGSWR team got the job done. By the way AGSWR stands for, if you are ready, Ackley-Geneva; and Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock. According to the state program these towns have had a habit of being in the state tournament--Wellsburg 18, Steamboat Rock 8, Ackley-Geneva 5. As if the big and strong aren't enough AGSWR starts no seniors and doesn't pull any off the bench.

AGSWR scored on their first 6/7 possessions and held a 13-0 lead before Solon found the scoring column. Five diffenent players scored for AGSWR during their initial burst. Obviously they were ready. I'm right by the floor and I was right by their bench and their was a different focus for them. Solon was 0/7 to start the game.

The A team took care of business and built their lead in the second quarter with an 18-12 period. The whole team contributed with six different scorers taking part. Solon had a better quarter, but it was coming from the outside as they could not match the muscle inside.

This was the quarter where Solon shined, but some hope in their faithful, and refocused the A team. AGSWR led 44-23 with 3:02 to go in the quarter when it started to rain 3s for Solon. Kelsey Kidwell drained two and Chelsea Tanner added another in a 9-2 run over 1:30 to make the score 46-32. Both teams scored one more time and the A team led 48-33 headed into the last quarter.

Solon had another run in them to start the quarter 7-3 cutting the margin to 51-40 with 6:38 left. Kidwell provided another 3 and two free throws for five of the points. That proved to be the last hurrah. AGSWR outscored Solon 14-8 the rest of the way. For the quarter AGSWR made 10 free throws. Kari Mutschler had 10 of the 19 AGWSRs points. She also made two three point plays old school.

Height Matters: AGSWR 5-8.2; Solon 5-8.6. Don't let this confuse you because the muscle of AGSWR made up for this. Besides AGSWR starts two 6-0 players. Solon's players look like cross country runners.
