Out & About: GHEC/Barnum

#4 posting 3.17.2006

GHEC 50, Barnum 46

GHEC advanced to the final in a hard fought, give and take tussle with bigger Barnum. The lead changed 9 times during the game and had 8 ties. Barnum was the highest seed left in the tournament at #2. GHEC now takes on that role with a #9 final AP ranking. Both GHEC and first game winner Fulda were #2 seeds in their respective sub sections.

Both teams traded 3s to open scoring. Megan Myhre opened with a 3, Jessica Petrowiak answered for GHEC, Myhre finished the sequence. Then it was into the paint. Both teams had sight of each other. Barnum would have the biggest leads of the first half with 3. Both teams also suffered droughts GHEC had a 0/6 string while Barnum was 0/7 during the same time. Barnum led for much of the half, but GHEC took the lead on a Lori Balcom basket from Petrowiak at 20-19. McKay gave the lead back to Barnum at 21-20. Petrowiak finished scoring in the first half with a drive 22-21.

Barnum started out the second half with a 9-0 run. This gave them the largest lead by either team at 30-22. McKay led the scoring push with four during the run. GHEC put together a 4/5 string and tied it at 30 with 12:39 to go. Ashley Walterman kicked it into overdrive with all 8 points. Barnum worked it into McKay when they had a chance Walterman would be a thief and score the lay up with her speed seperating herself from the oncoming persuers. The game was tied at 36. GHEC went up 42-36 after Abby Shoen scored and was fouled. She missed the free throw but Lori Balcom was there to get the rebound and put it in. Myhre regained her 3 touch to cut it to 42-39. GHEC would lose the lead when Myhre hit another 3, her fourth in the game with 2:17 to go. Barnum had the ball, but turned it over with 1:04 to go. Ashley Walterman delivered once again for the GHECers and they would not relinquish the lead. There was 59 seconds left and GHEC led 47-46. Barnum was looking inside but the lanes were closed. Four times they had to pass it in during that possession. On the last pass in Kylea Seboe went over and back. Jessica Petrowiak scored twice on free throws. with 15 seconds left. Another turnover, this time by Halverson on a fumble gave the game ball back to GHEC. Lori Balcom added a free throw to finish it off.

BY THE NUMBERS
GHEC: 50, 62, 80.6, .387
Barnum 46, 64, 71.9, .328
Bench: GHEC 7, Barnum 0
Paint ball: GHEC 26, Barnum 16. This seems odd because Barnum was bigger and McKay was getting her share. Obviously the other two big players did not produce points in paint land.
points off turnovers: GHEC 21, Barnum 12 Walterman had 9 of the GHEC points

The keys for GHEC tomorrow will be to take better care of the ball; limit Fulda to one shot, and get the offense flowing smoothly throughout the game. It should be a good matchup. Who will step up and deliver tomorrow. The brass ring calls.
