Out & About: Benilde-St. Margaret's/Mpls North

#4 posting 3.9.2006

MN 5AAA Semifinals
Benilde-St. Margaret's 72, Mpls North 48

Two streaks ended in the last semifinal at Edison. #1. Mpls North will not be going to the state tournament for the first time since 1996. They had been a fixture since the four class system was established and had won the last three titles. Injuries and transfers plagued the champs all year and Benilde had too much gas in the tank to be left at home. #2 Benilde for their part broke a two year curse of losing to a lower seeded team in the semis. If you want to go back three years Benilde stumbled against a lower seed in the quarters in 2003.

North actually had a 4-2 lead but Venisia Ford could not score all the points and BSM soon had the game out of reach. They went on a 23-5 blitz to give comfort to the BSM fans. It was a physical game as there were some old scores to settle. BSM's post Latoya Williams used to go to Mpls Henry, a team North usually did and still does pound. It was payback time, but the North players also had it hard for her. Also Kachine Alexander had to leave the floor in the second half in a loose ball scramble. Chanica Hall for BSM had ice on her legs, but that may not have been from tonight. She did not start. If you notice the free throws made you'll notice a huge advantage for BSM. That is because North's offense against the BSM zone primarily was to shoot 3s. You won't go to the line to often that way.
