Out & About: Charter Oak-Ute/Postville

#6 posting 3.6.2006

Iowa 1A Quarterfinals Game #3
Charter Oak-Ute 53, Postville 26

Charter Oak-Ute and IKM play in the Boyer Valley conference and both split their season series with each other. COU took care of Postville and the train is on track for a Boyer Valley championship game provided each wins in the semis.

Postville held a 1-0 lead after Brittany Heins made a free throw to open the scoring. That was the last time they were on top in a game dominated by COU’s height, quickness, and state tournament championship experience. COU went on an 8-0 run with Kala Kuhlman providing six points. Postville was hibernating during this phase with an 0/7 possession string. Brittany Heins was the force for Postville inside and she also showed her range by stepping out to the right corner and hitting a 3. She ended up with 8 points in the first 8 minutes as COU led 12-10 at the end of the first stanza. She was matched by Kala Kuhlman’s 8.

COU had a commanding performance in the 2nd quarter with an 18-6 showing. Postville had another 0/6 drought that did not help their cause. Four of those possessions ended up as turnovers. The Kuhlman sisters knocked down a 3 apiece and combined for 10 points. Kristin Bumsted was the force inside adding 6 to the total. COU led 30-16 at half.

Postville continued to have problems with their offensive system and again had a 0/6 drought. COU wasn’t connecting going 6/16 on possessions this quarter. Kami Kuhlman led COU with 8 in the quarter. She went to the line after she started taking it to the glass.

The fourth quarter did not see any dramatic push by Postville as they opened with an 0/9 string. Meanwhile COU was exploiting the efforts of Bumsted who scored six straight points on three possessions and ended up with 8 for the quarter.

Height Matters: COU 5-9.2, Postville 5-10 Even though Postville was a bit bigger, COU matched up well and was quicker, and played with more confidence
Department of defense: both teams used 2/3 zones

Kala Kuhlman 13, 11, 118.2, .545 I liked her energy, poise and confidence. She is the point guard. Nice jump shot. Good feet. Makes good decisions. RF: has a tendency to carry the ball on the dribble.
Kami Kuhlman 16, 19, 84.2, .368 younger sister is primary outside shooter, besides Kala. Is just as aggressive in attacking the basket. RF: had a case of the jitters in the opening quarter with her shots not falling. Found rhythm later.
Alyssa Staley 2, 4, 50.0, .250
Kristin Bumsted 20, 15, 133.3, .667 another player that is intriguing. Big body and not afraid to push people around. Seals well. Takes up space. Decent touch. RF: maybe not the fastest.
